'Kapil's innings gave India the confidence to win the World Cup'

The 1983 World Cup will always be remembered for the boil-over in the final. West Indies had been rampant up to that point in the World Cups and it looked as though they were going to win three oin the trot. And suddenly India beat them in what was an absolute boil-over at Lord's. It surprised everybody.

India would have probably never got to the final without the magnificent innings from Kapil Dev at Tunbridge Wells. He came in against Zimbabwe, a match that India would have been expected to win quite comfortably. But at that point India were 17 for 5, batting first. Kapil came in and he blasted them to all parts.

Six sixes in his 175 and, I think, 16 boundaries. It was just a magnificent knock, and it was typical of Kapil. When he had the bat in his hands he was prepared to take risks. At that stage, really, it was all or nothing for India.

Kapil was able to annihilate the Zimbabwe attack and give the Indian bowlers something to bowl at. They won that game, and I am sure it was the impetus that the innings of Kapil gave the Indians that gave them the confidence to think that they could go on and win the final. By the time they got to Lord's, there was a belief there that they could beat West Indies, and I am sure that came as a result of the innings played by Kapil at Tunbridge Wells.
