How about not using words like "promote" and "demote"? It's a matter of fitting the bext eleven players into eleven equally important positions. If Root plays at six, it doesn't mean he's been demoted, which has emotional overtones of having failed at opening. It's just that they think he'll do a more usful job at six.

Root should move because he can't make a run opening.
