Partnership
Partnership of the day, Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara, 98 in 8.5 overs
Kings XI Punjab were chasing a daunting target of 201 in front of a packed Eden Gardens. Mahela Jayawardene had led a strong start and Kumar Sangakkara joined him in the fifth over, with the score on 51. In the final over of the Powerplay, Jayawardene made room and square-drove Chris Gayle for four, stayed back and pulled over short fine leg, and lofted the last ball back over the bowler's head for six. Sangakkara's contribution was vital too, for his 38 off 22 balls eased the pressure on Jayawardene. They had added 98 off 8.5 overs when Sangakkara fell with the score on 149, leaving Punjab on course for victory.
Over
Chris Gayle v Ravi Bopara, 13th over of Kolkata Knight Riders' innings
Kolkata were 89 for 1 when Bopara came on to bowl the 13th over. Gayle heaved the second and third balls over the midwicket and long-on boundary. For the fourth ball, Gayle created some room and launched it flat over the cover boundary. The fifth was lost over long on again. At the end of the 33-run over, Kolkata were 122 for 1.
Moment
Sourav Ganguly was laughing in the dug out at the end of the 15th over of Kolkata's innings. He was laughing at Piyush Chawla's failed attempt to hold on to a mis-hit from Gayle, who was tearing the bowling apart. However, he wasn't laughing anymore when the game was over, after Mahela Jayawardene's century had won the game for Punjab.
