England tour of Ireland, 2013 / Commentary

RSA Challenge

Ireland v England

England won by 6 wickets (with 42 balls remaining)

Ok folks, here come the players. Great reception for them. Steven Finn will open the bowling. The sun is out, which after England's previous two visits here is a fantastic start to the day.

Mark Kidger: "This is a very interesting match and a real test for an inexperienced England side. Chances for a number of players to make a bid for next year's central contracts and lucrative tours." Indeed, especially with the growing trend of bigger international squads to cope with the packed schedule.

10.15am So some interesting selections, Michael Carberry is given his chance at the top of the order and James Taylor is back in an England shirt having flirted with a call-up all season. Boyd Rankin becomes the eighth player to have played for two teams in ODIs. For Ireland, they have plenty of experience in their line up with only three of their side having not played any county cricket.

10am Here's the toss, Eoin Morgan calls heads, it lands as such and England will bowl first as they tend to like to do in one-dayers. Morgan confirms those three debuts so it seems like England are going to put out two allrounders in Ben Stokes and Luke Wright. Will Porterfield would also have bowled first.

England 1 Michael Carberry, 2 Luke Wright, 3 James Taylor, 4 Gary Ballance, 5 Eoin Morgan, 6 Ravi Bopara, 7 Jos Buttler, 8 Ben Stokes, 9 James Tredwell, 10 Steven Finn, 11 Boyd Rankin

Ireland 1 Will Porterfield, 2 Paul Stirling, 3 Ed Joyce, 4 Niall O'Brien, 5 Gary Wilson, 6 Kevin O'Brien, 7 John Mooney, 8 Trent Johnston, 9 George Dockrell, 10 Tim Murtagh, 11 Max Sorensen

Early team news, England have issued three new caps and Michael Carberry, Boyd Rankin and Gary Ballance are all set to make their England ODI debuts.

9.50am BST Morning everyone. Change of scenery today, we're over the Irish Sea for England's biennial ODI with Ireland. And we're also at the spanking new home of Irish cricket, Malahide, right on the coast a little outside Dublin. It's set up nicely for a cracking afternoon with England's young guns taking on Ireland with a point to prove that belong at the top table of world cricket; an upset here would do their cause the world of good.

0.1

Finn to Porterfield, no run, starts back of a length outside off, no great carry through Buttler

0.2

Finn to Porterfield, FOUR, short of a length on the hip, neatly tucked away fine by Porterfield to get him and Ireland up and running

0.3

Finn to Porterfield, no run, that's a better delivery, on off stump and seaming away as Porterfield just about pulls his bat inside the line at the last moment

0.4

Finn to Porterfield, no run, more movement, a fuller length and it jags away off the seam as Porterfield prods without much footwork

Could be a tricky hour for the openers

0.5

Finn to Porterfield, no run, now he's lulled into a drive outside off, was actually quite wide, the ball scoots past the outside edge

0.6

Finn to Porterfield, no run, good line, on off stump, going across the left hander and then just offers to nip back...Porterfield leaves on length as much as line

End of over 1 (4 runs) Ireland 4/0 (RR: 4.00)
WTS Porterfield    4* (6b 1x4)      ST Finn    1-0-4-0
PR Stirling    0* (0b)

Here comes one of the moments of the day: Boyd Rankin against his former team-mates

1.1

Rankin to Stirling, no run, starts back of a length, decent pace, Stirling defends it to the leg side with a closed face

1.2

Rankin to Stirling, 5 wides, oh my goodness, that's gone horribly wrong, not sure whether it slipped out or not but it's gone miles down the leg side (think Harmison at his worst) and Buttler can't stop the boundary despite getting a glove to it

1.2

Rankin to Stirling, no run, now this is short and wide outside off, hammered off the back foot with some fierce power but picks out mid-off

1.3

Rankin to Stirling, no run, gets on a fuller length outside off, Stirling restrains himself and leaves it alone

1.4

Rankin to Stirling, 1 run, short of a length outside off, dropped square into the off side and it's a well-judged single...important to rotate the strike, especially with right and left-handers in

1.5

Rankin to Porterfield, FOUR, can't adjust his line straight away, on leg stump and Porterfield clips it away to fine leg for his second boundary

1.6

Rankin to Porterfield, no run, gets it on off stump, full length, driven firmly to mid-off

Decent pace from Rankin but an erratic line in his first over. Lively start for Ireland

End of over 2 (10 runs) Ireland 14/0 (RR: 7.00)
WTS Porterfield    8* (8b 2x4)      WB Rankin    1-0-10-0
PR Stirling    1* (4b)      ST Finn    1-0-4-0

2.1

Finn to Stirling, no run, full at off stump, jabbed firmly towards mid-off...Stirling isn't one for much footwork

2.2

Finn to Stirling, 1 run, shorter delivery, quite tight to the body but he's able to cut it down to third man

It's Stirling's birthday today. Avinash: "Happy Birthday to Stirling! Get some runs buddy."

2.3

Finn to Porterfield, 1 run, good delivery, on off stump with a hint of movement, takes the outside and runs wide of the two slips down to third man

2.4

Finn to Stirling, no run, defended firmly to the off side

2.5

Finn to Stirling, no run, another punchy drive to mid-off as Finn pitches this fuller at the stumps

2.6

Finn to Stirling, 1 leg bye, goes for the pull, wasn't quite as short as he thought, gets taken high on the back leg and the ball runs wide of second slip

End of over 3 (3 runs) Ireland 17/0 (RR: 5.66)
PR Stirling    2* (9b)      ST Finn    2-0-6-0
WTS Porterfield    9* (9b 2x4)      WB Rankin    1-0-10-0

3.1

Rankin to Stirling, FOUR, fantastic shot, stand-and-deliver from Rankin as he drives firmly through the line of a full delivery and dispatches this past cover

3.2

Rankin to Stirling, FOUR, same again, perhaps even better this time, full outside off and Stirling pings it through the off side with a beautifully clean strike

Early problems for Morgan and Rankin

3.3

Rankin to Stirling, no run, drags the length back and gets it on off stump, defended towards square leg

3.4

Rankin to Stirling, no run, this zings off the middle of the bat again, but goes straight to Taylor at cover

3.5

Rankin to Stirling, OUT, gone! Rankin has his first England ODI wicket. Back of a length at off stump, squares up Stirling with a touch of seam movement, takes a thick edge high on the bat and carries low to second slip where Ballance held a sharp chance

PR Stirling c Ballance b Rankin 10 (6m 14b 2x4 0x6) SR: 71.42

That wicket a perfect example of attributes Rankin brings. Extra bounce from a length.

3.6

Rankin to Joyce, no run, nearly has a fiddle at this outside off, but think he left it alone at the last minute, short of a length and climbs through to Buttler

smudgeon: "Nothing personal Gnasher, but is George Binoy on duty today? Something about the symmetry of Binoy George & George Binoy together, manning the commentary, just screams "cricket" to me..." Sorry, George (Binoy) is on holiday at the moment

End of over 4 (8 runs) Ireland 25/1 (RR: 6.25)

4.1

Finn to Porterfield, no run, short of a length at off stump, defended into the covers

4.2

4.3

Finn to Porterfield, no run, not so full this time, outside off, left alone

4.4

Finn to Porterfield, no run, pushed across outside off, shoulders arms again

4.5

Finn to Porterfield, no run, gets across his stumps and defends this back towards Finn

Finn comes round the wicket

4.6

Finn to Porterfield, FOUR, offers up width which allows Porterfield to free his arms with a strong square drive wide of point

Ireland's top order not holding back early on. Inconsistent start from England's two quicks

End of over 5 (8 runs) Ireland 33/1 (RR: 6.60)
WTS Porterfield    17* (15b 4x4)      ST Finn    3-0-14-0

5.3

5.3

Rankin to Joyce, no run, full at off stump, pushed back down the pitch where Rankin makes the long reach down

5.4

Rankin to Joyce, 1 leg bye, takes the pad into the leg side, Taylor can't stop the single from square leg

5.5

Rankin to Porterfield, no run, worked to square leg

5.6

Rankin to Porterfield, no run, that's loose outside off, aims an expansive drive to a ball that wasn't that full and is fortunate not to edge to the keeper

End of over 6 (2 runs) Ireland 35/1 (RR: 5.83)
WTS Porterfield    17* (17b 4x4)      WB Rankin    3-0-19-1

A short delay as there are some reflections behind the bowlers' arm that need covering. Sun causing a few issues. Taking a little while to get this sorted. Very bright reflection off the covers. We are still waiting...all is sorted now.

6.1

Finn to Joyce, no run, short of a length, Joyce is behind the line and defends

6.2

Finn to Joyce, 1 run, touch of extra bounce this time, but Joyce plays it well as he tucks it behind square on the leg side

6.3

Finn to Porterfield, no run, on off stump, defended back where it came from

6.4

Finn to Porterfield, no run, that's a good delivery, moves away off the seam from around off stump and beats Porterfield's outside edge

6.6

Finn to Porterfield, no run, a little shorter and wider, driven firmly off the back foot but cover makes a good stop

End of over 7 (1 run) Ireland 36/1 (RR: 5.14)
WTS Porterfield    17* (21b 4x4)      ST Finn    4-0-15-0
EC Joyce    1* (7b)      WB Rankin    3-0-19-1

7.1

Rankin to Joyce, no run, this delivery stops a little in the pitch, it's short of a length, and Joyce is a fraction early on his back-foot punch

7.2

Rankin to Joyce, no run, hops into line and works this one to square leg

7.3

Rankin to Joyce, OUT, punched into the off side, what's happened here? A bail has fallen off. Rankin is pointing at it. Has it blown off? Or has Joyce touched his stumps? Umpires having a quick look at the TV. Looks like he's hit wicket! His heel just rocked the base of leg stump. Umpires still checking. No real signals given, but Joyce is now walking off. What a way to go. All rather subdued. Not sure the crowd have been given any information. Complete silence.

EC Joyce hit wicket b Rankin 1 (21m 10b 0x4 0x6) SR: 10.00

Was only Boyd Rankin who noticed what had happened. So no 'Dominic Cork' moment today. Wonder if Joyce was really aware?

7.4

Rankin to NJ O'Brien, no run, angled across outside off, left alone

7.5

Rankin to NJ O'Brien, no run, almost pops a return catch here as he defends a fraction early to another delivery that doesn't hurry off the pitch

7.6

Rankin to NJ O'Brien, no run, good line outside off, this one climbs (albeit quite slowly) through to Buttler

End of over 8 (wicket maiden) Ireland 36/2 (RR: 4.50)

Finn to Porterfield, no run, short of a length at off stump, defended with an angled bat towards backward point

8.3

Finn to Porterfield, no run, outside off, left alone

8.4

Finn to Porterfield, no run, that's well bowled, pitches it fuller and draws Porterfield forward but he doesn't get a massive stride in and is beaten playing away from his body

8.5

Finn to Porterfield, no run, tries to cut this but it doesn't quite bounce as much as he expected, gets a bottom edge that dribbles back towards Buttler

8.6

Finn to Porterfield, no run, takes a blow! He's ducked straight into a short ball. It wasn't that short and certainly didn't bounce much. Struck him flush on the side of the helmet not much above stump height

A good maiden from Finn

9.3

Rankin to NJ O'Brien, no run, beats the outside edge, back of a length and seams away as O'Brien pushes at it off the back foot

9.4

9.5

Rankin to NJ O'Brien, no run, keeps it short of a length, defended on his toes to the off side

9.6

Rankin to NJ O'Brien, no run, excellent diving save a cover by Wright, cuts off another boundary as O'Brien drives this off the back foot

JF Mooney    25* (37b 2x4)      WB Rankin    8-1-40-2

Ireland could now be looking towards 260-270, great progress here...

45.1

Rankin to Porterfield, OUT, full and follows Porterfield again, who is stepping to leg this time, he's ended up yorked well outside leg stump and the ball cannons into the stumps. Bit unfortunate for Porterfield but well bowled Rankin, realising the batsman had stepped away and followed him to cramp him up, it was a good full, straight delivery and Porterfield was nowhere near it

WTS Porterfield b Rankin 112 (174m 142b 14x4 1x6) SR: 78.87

45.2

Rankin to Johnston, 1 run, ful ball comes off the pad to Buttler's left, he throws at the non-striker's end as they take a leg bye and the ball comes off Johnston and cannons away towards the long-off boundary, Morgan chases and saves what would have been five

45.3

Rankin to Mooney, 1 wide, goes for the dab sweep outside leg and misses, wide anyway

45.3

Rankin to Mooney, 2 runs, length ball swung into the off side, just enough bat on it to avoid extra-cover running back

45.4

Rankin to Mooney, 1 wide, another leg side wide

45.4

Rankin to Mooney, no run, step to leg and a big swing a miss at a length ball that narrowly evades off stump

45.5

Rankin to Mooney, OUT, full and straight, Mooney misses and is given out lbw it looked very straight that. Good pace from Rankin, the batsman hurried in trying to play to leg and misses, caught very low on the pad in front of middle. Slight question over whether it might have pitched just outside leg but it was so full it's very hard to tell and looked very straight

JF Mooney lbw b Rankin 27 (52m 40b 2x4 0x6) SR: 67.50

45.6

Rankin to Sorensen, 1 run, full wide of off stump, driven off low on the bat to deep cover

End of over 46 (6 runs) Ireland 230/7 (RR: 5.00)
MC Sorensen    1* (1b)      WB Rankin    9-1-46-4
DT Johnston    1* (1b)      BA Stokes    8-0-39-0

So Ireland not quite as well equipped now for the late-innings charge...

46.1

Stokes to Sorensen, no run, length ball that just shapes away a touch , flicked at and missed outside off stump

46.2

Stokes to Sorensen, 1 run, full ball just outside off, driven towards mid-off, they take on the fielder and get home

46.3

Stokes to Johnston, no run, goes to pull this and misses, comes off the pad back towards the bowler

46.4

Stokes to Johnston, 2 runs, full and straight, dug out down the ground, pretty straight, Carberry with the chase round from long-on and can't save the second

46.5

Stokes to Johnston, 1 run, step to leg and cracked hard square on the off side for a single to deep cover

46.6

Stokes to Sorensen, 1 run, full length on off stump, forced into the on side, they get an easy single to midwicket on the edge of the circle

Nice cheap over that...

End of over 47 (5 runs) Ireland 235/7 (RR: 5.00)
MC Sorensen    3* (4b)      BA Stokes    9-0-44-0
DT Johnston    4* (4b)      WB Rankin    9-1-46-4

Finn is back to bowl his final two overs...

47.1

Finn to Sorensen, SIX, just back in length on off stump, a big swing over the leg side and this is nailed into the crowd, lovely strike

47.2

Finn to Sorensen, 1 leg bye, full and straight, strikes the pad, probably going down, it runs towards third man for a leg bye

47.3

Finn to Johnston, 1 run, full at leg stump, tried to be swung down the ground but got an inside edge into the pad that runs to cover for a single

47.4

Finn to Sorensen, no run, length ball just outside off, big heave across the line, misses completely

47.5

Finn to Sorensen, (no ball) 1 run, length ball just outside off, cut into the covers for a single but Finn has knocked down the stumps again with his knee

47.5

Finn to Johnston, 1 run, step to leg and a swing from outside off on the bounce to mid-off, good save on the bounce that, it was awkward

47.6

Finn to Sorensen, 1 leg bye, fuller on the stumps, aimed to leg, comes off the pad towards point

End of over 48 (12 runs) Ireland 247/7 (RR: 5.14)
MC Sorensen    10* (9b 1x6)      ST Finn    9-1-31-0
DT Johnston    6* (6b)      BA Stokes    9-0-44-0

48.1

Stokes to Sorensen, FOUR, short ball and a poor line with long leg up in the circle, helped on it's way to the fence, poor bowling

48.2

Stokes to Sorensen, 1 run, short ball pulled again, this time both men are back on the leg side fence, deep square leg fields

48.3

Stokes to Johnston, 1 run, length ball at the stumps, Johnston gives himself room and dabs wide of backward point for a single

48.4

Stokes to Sorensen, 1 run, full on off stump, clothed to mid-on, they refuse the run but Carberry fumbles it anyway! What a stinker he is having today

48.5

Stokes to Johnston, 1 leg bye, slower ball bouncer, batsman through with the shot several days too soon, hits him on the back and it runs towards point

48.6

Stokes to Sorensen, 1 bye, another slower ball, swing and a miss outside off, Buttler is again unable to field on the bounce and they get a bye on the rebound to long leg

End of over 49 (9 runs) Ireland 256/7 (RR: 5.22)
MC Sorensen    16* (13b 1x4 1x6)      BA Stokes    10-0-51-0
DT Johnston    7* (8b)      ST Finn    9-1-31-0

Last set then, how many can they manage, swing for all your worth lads...

49.1

Finn to Sorensen, 1 run, back of a length pulled down to Carberry at deep backward square, it's bobbling a little but Carberry saves well

49.2

Finn to Johnston, 1 run, step to leg and a big inside edge through square leg gives them a single

49.3

Finn to Sorensen, no run, full slower ball outside off, swung at and missed and hallelujah Buttler has stopped one

49.4

Finn to Sorensen, SIX, full ball on the stumps and a big swing into the leg side, connects well and there's enough bat on it to clear cow corner, good thump

49.5

Finn to Sorensen, 1 run, goes again, this from a short ball, doesn't quite nail it and finds deep square leg on the bounce

49.6

Finn to Johnston, FOUR, full length at leg stump, Sorensen steps away and hammers it down the ground, what a stroke, timing was superb and a great way to end the innings

2pm, lunch So a nice solid total from Ireland, led by Will Porterfield's hundred which was exactly what his side needed, big runs from the top. Some other little contributions have pushed them up to a decent score and a chance to put England's inexperienced line-up under pressure. 270 to win coming up in 45 minutes...

End of over 50 (13 runs) Ireland 269/7
DT Johnston    12* (10b 1x4)      ST Finn    10-1-44-0
MC Sorensen    24* (17b 1x4 2x6)      BA Stokes    10-0-51-0
