Arthur Gwynn was an outstanding sportsman and, like his brother Lucius, represented Ireland at rugby and cricket. An attacking batsman, he scored 2736 runs for Dublin University and played in all four of the university's first-class matches in 1895, including 130 against Cambridge; two years earlier had had "outrageously" taken on Essex's feared fast bowler Charles Kortright at Leyton, making 43. In January 1898 he travelled to Burma where he had taken a job with the civil service; within six weeks he was dead after an infected tooth caused septicaemia.
