He took up umpiring in the Lockyer Valley in 1988-89 and and umpired in Townville during the 1989/90 season. By 1994-95 he had progressed sufficiently well to be appointed to the match played between South Queensland and North Queensland at Ivor Marsden Centre, Ipswich. Then followed an appointment to officiate in the December match played between Queensland Second XI and Queensland Country at the Brisbane Cricket Ground. He umpired in the Super 8's in Cairns and Townzille in 1996. In 1996-97 he was one of the umpires for the national Country Championships played in Toowoomba and was selected to stand in the match between Australia Country and West Indies. He has more recently commenced umpiring in Brisbane Grade cricket and continues to be selected for notable matches.

Umpired in the National U/19 Campionships in Adelaide 1999 and U/17 Championships in Brisbane 2000.

A right hand batsman and a right arm medium pace bowler he played reserve grade cricket for Laidley in the Lockyer Association. His family moved to Queensland when he was five years of age and he was educated at Sandgate State School to year 5, and at the Laidley North State School and the Laidley North State School Secondary Department to year 10. He commenced working for Queensland Rail in 1974, working through the ranks to his present position of Container Terminal Supervisor in Toowoomba. In 1994 he was elected President of the Ipswich Cricket Umpires Association. Greg is married and is the proud father of four sons. He is a qualified Justice of the Peace.
