Commonwealth Bank Series - 11th match

India v Sri Lanka

India won by 7 wickets (with 80 balls remaining)

Zaheer to bowl. Mahela has strike. Two slips on a sunny afternoon. Sri Lanka are favourites to win this and make the final. Cricket, however, is a very funny game.

"Congrats Zaheer for completing a full tour of Australia!," says Prasanna, accompanied by a really slow clap.

""The circumstances demand that we chase," - What? If Dhoni & co had done any analysis they would know that all bar 1 bonus point in this series has been won by the team batting first. And in previous series the same was the case. Doesn't he realise the value of scoreboard pressure?" Very interesting take that from Harik. The one difference I'd like to point out: the teams that got the bonus point batting first didn't do so after starting the game looking for one. Here, India's approach is completely geared towards that extra point. It is not a 'let's win this game, and if possible with a bonus point' approach.

Toss: MS Dhoni has won the toss and bowls. (No, this isn't a dream.) "The circumstances demand that we chase," Dhoni says, since Mark Nicholas is quick to point out the irony that the one time he wins the toss, he can't bat first on a batting pitch. Irfan Pathan is injured, and Zaheer Khan comes back into the side. "Irfan's injury affects his bowling more than his batting, and we need the extra seamer, so Zaheer is back," says Dhoni.

A hint of nostalgia, as Dhoni recalls watching those games in Sharjah back in the 90s when India would go into the final league game of a series with a NRR situation facing them. A couple of such memorable chases from the 90s - against Zimbabwe in Benoni in 1997, and against Australia in Sharjah in 1998, the famous Desert Storm game. One common link between the two - Sachin Tendulkar scored rousing tons in both.

Sri Lanka are unchanged, and Mahela says his side is going to forget all scenarios and approach the match like any other. We hear Dilshan hurt his hand during the nets, but he's fine and will play.

India's decision to bowl is wise considering just how well Sri Lanka have been chasing targets since the fourth ODI in South Africa.

"Irfan injured but can bat!! He could have been drafted in as a batsman. He seems to be the only batsman currently able to tonk the ball!! and, he won't leak 20 runs," points out the Irreverent Indian. That 20 run quip is never going to die. Mind you, India haven't lost any of their games by sub-20 run margins.

Australia is a great country to tour, as Sid Monga's wonderful tour diaries have let us know. So this is not a completely pointless trip for Manoj Tiwary.

A long tour could end today. Tragi-comically, MS Dhoni had no idea that India still held a mathematical chance when he came out to meet the press after the previous match. Indian cricket will never cease to amaze.

A refresher of the equation: All that Sri Lanka need today is to ensure India don't win with a bonus point. If India, somehow, manage the seeming impossibility of winning with a bonus point, Sri Lanka then go into a must-win game against Australia. On form, SL are quite likely to deny India that bonus point today, but the key for Mahela Jayawardene's men will be to approach the game as any other. India barely have a seam attack left, with Zaheer Khan and Vinay Kumar in the injury room, and Irfan Pathan quite sore after that collision with Suresh Raina. And don't even get us started on India's batting woes. We don't have any inputs yet on India's side for the day, and all those details should be available soon after the toss.

When you need to chase a bonus point, would you rather bat or chase? Don't answer this question if you are MS Dhoni - chances are that you will lose the toss and Jayawardene will decide for you. Just to spice things up further, there is a good chance of rain later in the day. Zaheer is warming up and stretching his calf, which could be a good sign for India.

0.1

Khan to Jayawardene, 1 wide, wide down the leg side from over the stumps. Zaheer gets the ball to swing, but it landed outside leg to start with.

0.1

Khan to Jayawardene, 1 run, on the pads again, at 132 kph, and Mahela clips it behind square. India have protection in the deep.

There's barely a crowd in for this game.

0.2

Khan to Dilshan, no run, pitched up on off stump, and Dilshan punches it back past Zaheer's attempt to lunge and stop. Mid-on comes in the way.

0.3

Khan to Dilshan, no run, full again, at 132 kph, Dilshan is again on the front foot and drives into the covers.

A reminder that this tournament's playing conditions gives precedence to head-to-heads ahead of NRR. If India win today with a bonus point, they will tie SL on points and be 2-1 on the head-to-head.

0.4

Khan to Dilshan, no run, swing and a miss outside off as Zaheer wafts it on a full length wide of off stump.

0.5

Khan to Dilshan, no run, compact from Dilly, leans out and defends into the off side.

0.6

Khan to Dilshan, 2 runs, a couple of runs to end the over. Back of a length on the hips and Dilshan tries to nudge it away. The ball doesn't go into the outfield quick enough for the fielder to come in and deny the second.

End of over 1 (4 runs) Sri Lanka 4/0 (RR: 4.00)
TM Dilshan    2* (5b)      Z Khan    1-0-4-0
DPMD Jayawardene    1* (1b)

Praveen Kumar gets the second new ball. Bowled exceptionally well in Sydney.

1.1

Kumar to Jayawardene, no run, gets the big inswing going straight away. It kept curling in out of his fingers and got Mahela's inside edge onto the body. The ball rolled near the stumps and Mahela deflects it atway with bat.

1.2

Kumar to Jayawardene, no run, fuller length, Mahela leans out and defends it down the track.

1.3

Kumar to Jayawardene, 1 run, another one nips in at 129 kph, Mahela tucks it to the leg side for a quick single.

Two slips.

1.4

Kumar to Dilshan, no run, short of driving length, Dilshan stays back and carves into cover as the ball nips in. Mistimed.

1.5

Kumar to Dilshan, no run, good bowling. He's looking for the bat-pad gap, with a big inswinger. Dilshan plays with a good enough forward press and works it to midwicket.

1.6

Kumar to Dilshan, no run, inside edge? Aborted lbw appeal from PK as he gets one to hold its line from a length around off stump. Dilshan was forward and stuck close to the knee roll.

End of over 2 (1 run) Sri Lanka 5/0 (RR: 2.50)
TM Dilshan    2* (8b)      P Kumar    1-0-1-0
DPMD Jayawardene    2* (4b)      Z Khan    1-0-4-0

2.1

Khan to Jayawardene, no run, top delivery from Zaheer. He gets this angle across Mahela at decent pace and it skims past the outside edge.

2.2

Khan to Jayawardene, FOUR, Mahela at his best. Makes Zaheer armed with a new ball look like a spinner. He starts from a foot outside the crease, and shimmies down the track to get under a length ball and slap it almost kindly over mid-on for four.

2.3

Khan to Jayawardene, no run, fuller length wide of off stump, Mahela leans out and defends.

2.4

Khan to Jayawardene, no run, holds the length back as the ball angles across. Mahela defends to the off side.

2.5

Khan to Jayawardene, no run, flowing drive into the covers as Zaheer pitches it up, but Raina is in the way.

2.6

Khan to Jayawardene, no run, Mahela stays in the crease as he leans across to defend a length ball to the leg side.

End of over 3 (4 runs) Sri Lanka 9/0 (RR: 3.00)
DPMD Jayawardene    6* (10b 1x4)      Z Khan    2-0-8-0
TM Dilshan    2* (8b)      P Kumar    1-0-1-0

3.1

Kumar to Dilshan, no run, PK is searching for swing, keeps it on a good length outside off and Dilshan punches into the covers.

Suresh Raina has lost a few fans in this tour. That includes the entire brigade of Irfan Pathan fans.

3.2

Kumar to Dilshan, no run, back of a length outside off, Dilshan stays in the crease and shoulders arms.

3.3

Kumar to Dilshan, no run, short and wide, the ball isn't coming on at pace here. Dilshan tries to carve through point and misses.

3.4

Kumar to Dilshan, no run, back of a length, Dilshan stays behind the line and defends.

3.5

Kumar to Dilshan, FOUR, crashed past point. Just past point. Pretty poor ball that at PK's pace. Short and wide of off stump, and Dilshan flays it happily. Kohli dived away to his right, but the ball flew past. It had already bounced when it passed him.

3.6

Kumar to Dilshan, 1 run, on the pads to end the over, Dilshan tucks it square for a single.

End of over 4 (5 runs) Sri Lanka 14/0 (RR: 3.50)
TM Dilshan    7* (14b 1x4)      P Kumar    2-0-6-0
DPMD Jayawardene    6* (10b 1x4)      Z Khan    2-0-8-0

4.1

Khan to Dilshan, 1 run, short ball from Zak, no real pace on it. Dilshan slaps it across to the deep for a single.

4.2

Khan to Jayawardene, no run, pitched up wide of off stump, Mahela plays a scoop drive in the air, but the ball lands well short of point.

4.3

Khan to Jayawardene, no run, short of a length outside off, the ball darts away off the seam and Mahela leaves.

4.4

Khan to Jayawardene, no run, full length on the pads, Mahela works it to the leg side.

4.5

Khan to Jayawardene, SIX, Mahela is taking him on! Another stunning stroke, this time he doesn't loft it with love, he launches it with a flourish. Skips out once again, the ball is fuller than in the last over and Mahela just swings it off the middle of the bat over long-on.

4.6

Khan to Jayawardene, no run, stays in the crease now, the surprise sortie done and dusted, and defends to the off side.

End of over 5 (7 runs) Sri Lanka 21/0 (RR: 4.20)
DPMD Jayawardene    12* (15b 1x4 1x6)      Z Khan    3-0-15-0
TM Dilshan    8* (15b 1x4)      P Kumar    2-0-6-0

5.1

Kumar to Dilshan, 1 run, Dilshan covers the line from the crease and pushes a single to mid-on.

5.2

Kumar to Jayawardene, no run, length ball from PK, he hasn't swung too many in the last couple of overs. Defended by Mahela.

5.3

Kumar to Jayawardene, no run, he charges out to PK, who sees him coming and holds the length back and cramps him for room. Mahela's drag finds midwicket.

5.4

Kumar to Jayawardene, 1 run, a single pinched to Kohli. Mahela stays back and drops the ball to point. Dilshan flies across and beats Kohli's under-arm throw which in any case missed the stumps.

5.5

Kumar to Dilshan, no run, appeal for lbw, but the height may have saved Dilshan. PK got this ball to nip in off the seam, and Dilshan was caught on the crease. He was hit over the knee roll, but the Hawk Eye reading should make for interesting viewing. Here it is, it agrees with Taufel. Going over the stumps.

5.6

Kumar to Dilshan, 1 run, keeps it back of a length again, Dilshan pushes it into the covers.

End of over 6 (3 runs) Sri Lanka 24/0 (RR: 4.00)
TM Dilshan    10* (18b 1x4)      P Kumar    3-0-9-0
DPMD Jayawardene    13* (18b 1x4 1x6)      Z Khan    3-0-15-0

Zak to Dilshan, been a while since that happened.

6.1

Khan to Dilshan, no run, length ball on off stump, angling across, and defended compactly off the front foot.

6.2

Khan to Dilshan, no run, over-pitched wide of off stump, and Dilshan misses the boundary chance. He drives it cleanly but straight to mid-off.

6.3

Khan to Dilshan, 1 run, slower ball at 120 kph, looped up on the toes and clipped through midwicket.

6.4

Khan to Jayawardene, no run, drops this short, doesn't give Mahela any room as he stays back and looks to glide it square. Plays it straight to point.

6.5

Khan to Jayawardene, 1 run, slow offcutter at 118 kph, Mahela works it off his pads behind square for a single.

6.6

Khan to Dilshan, 1 run, back of a length again to end the over, Dilshan works to midwicket for one. Expect a lot of slower balls today.

End of over 7 (3 runs) Sri Lanka 27/0 (RR: 3.85)
TM Dilshan    12* (22b 1x4)      Z Khan    4-0-18-0
DPMD Jayawardene    14* (20b 1x4 1x6)      P Kumar    3-0-9-0

7.1

Kumar to Dilshan, 1 run, Third umpire called for after a direct hit, but Dilshan seems to have made his ground. Only just. Raina was the man swooping in from mid-on and he under-armed it onto the stumps, but Dilshan was in without even having to dive.

7.2

Kumar to Jayawardene, no run, Mahela again tries to make his own pace, PK smartly follows Mahela and bowls it short of a length at the pads. Mahela has no room for leverage and can't play a proper shot.

7.3

Kumar to Jayawardene, 1 run, can't play the ball any softer. Mahela literally tames the ball and makes it stop obediently on the off side. Dilshan is already half way there. Easily done

7.4

Kumar to Dilshan, no run, an appeal for a catch behind! Or is it an appeal for lbw? Dhoni smiles after it is turned down and signals the latteer. Dilshan moves across and attempts the ramp shot over the leg side. The replay shows it hit the elbow guard. Was it in front of the stumps? Surely too high..

7.5

Kumar to Dilshan, 2 runs, on Dilshan's pads, he works it softly to midwicket and they pinch a second off Ravindra Jadeja who runs in from the deep. This is exemplary running.

7.6

Kumar to Dilshan, no run, back of a length on the pads, Dilshan can't get the work to leg away this time. This is an impressive start from SL on a sluggish wicket.

End of over 8 (4 runs) Sri Lanka 31/0 (RR: 3.87)
TM Dilshan    15* (26b 1x4)      P Kumar    4-0-13-0
DPMD Jayawardene    15* (22b 1x4 1x6)      Z Khan    4-0-18-0

8.1

Khan to Jayawardene, 1 run, full ball on the stumps, Zaheer is not bowling much outside off any more. Mahela works it wide of mid-on for one.

8.2

Khan to Dilshan, 1 run, knuckled slower ball from Zaheer, holds the length back and Dilshan punches into the covers for a single.

Round the stumps from Zak.

8.3

Khan to Jayawardene, no run, another slower ball that loops in as Mahela skips out and plays across the line. Hit on the pad, but Taufel needs to be a computer to predict if that would have hit the stumps.

8.4

Khan to Jayawardene, 1 wide, Zak slips this one across Mahela down the leg side and it is a wide.

8.4

Khan to Jayawardene, no run, another slower ball, and he's holding the length back. Mahela edges it onto the pad, and to the off side.

8.5

Khan to Jayawardene, 1 run, another slower ball, this time full on the pads at 117 kph and Dilshan gets it away through square leg to Kohli in the deep. Kohli and Jadeja fielding on the ropes in the leg side. India rotating their close-in fielders now?

8.6

Khan to Dilshan, 1 run, slower ball from over the stumps, well wide of leg stump, but Dilshan gets the bat across to play it square for one. Surely a wide if he'd let that go.

End of over 9 (5 runs) Sri Lanka 36/0 (RR: 4.00)
TM Dilshan    17* (28b 1x4)      Z Khan    5-0-23-0
DPMD Jayawardene    17* (26b 1x4 1x6)      P Kumar    4-0-13-0

"Apparently India were going to conduct a comprehensive review of the tour, but then remembered they don't believe in review systems and cancelled it." Ouch, Jimmy.

9.1

Kumar to Dilshan, FOUR, at PK's pace, he really can't get away with too many half-trackers. Especially when Dilshan is batting. He was into the pull so early that the ball flew in between midwicket and mid-on for four.

9.2

Kumar to Dilshan, no run, short again, this time outside off, and Dilshan slaps it straight to point.

9.3

Kumar to Dilshan, no run, better line this time, and closer to a decent length too. Dilshan defends it back down the track.

PK's boot has split. Haven't seen this happen too often. The subs are running in with replacements. PK looks sheepish. Looks funny, but try putting yourself in his shoes.

9.4

Kumar to Dilshan, no run, back of a length, just outside off and Dilshan's cut finds point again.

9.5

Kumar to Dilshan, 1 run, Kohli dives at point, but can't stop it cleanly. If he had, this could have been a run out chance at the bowler's end, since Dilshan wasn't running straight away. He stopped purely on Kohli's reputation there...

9.6

Kumar to Jayawardene, no run, wide outside off, Mahela opens the face and steers it, but straight to the man behind square on the off side.

End of over 10 (5 runs) Sri Lanka 41/0 (RR: 4.10)
DPMD Jayawardene    17* (27b 1x4 1x6)      P Kumar    5-0-18-0
TM Dilshan    22* (33b 2x4)      Z Khan    5-0-23-0

Surprise, surprise, Umesh Yadav has come on early. He must be surprised. Pleasantly.

10.1

Yadav to Dilshan, 1 run, full length outside off stump, Dilshan drives hard through mid-off.

10.2

Yadav to Jayawardene, no run, holds the length back, nice and pacy delivery defended from the crease.

A third man in place, for the first time today. Signs of a slow pitch, and a fast bowler.

10.3

Yadav to Jayawardene, 1 run, back of a length outside off, dropped to the off side for a single.

10.4

Yadav to Dilshan, 1 run, angled into the pads at 145 kph, Dilshan whips to midwicket for a single.

10.5

Yadav to Jayawardene, 2 runs, gets the couple this time to the leg side.

10.6

Yadav to Jayawardene, 2 runs, third man comes into play, the gangling Ashwin had some room to cover and dived to his left. Mahela had little room outside off, but still opened the face to steer. He got it just over Gambhir at gully.

Apologies on the scorer's behalf for the glitches in the last over. Getting sorted now, I believe.

End of over 11 (7 runs) Sri Lanka 48/0 (RR: 4.36)
DPMD Jayawardene    22* (31b 1x4 1x6)      UT Yadav    1-0-7-0
TM Dilshan    24* (35b 2x4)      P Kumar    5-0-18-0

11.2

Jadeja to Dilshan, no run, stays in the crease and opens the face to defend to work it to the off side.

11.3

Jadeja to Dilshan, no run, tossed up, he skips out and drives it back to the bowler.

11.4

Jadeja to Dilshan, 1 run, varies his length all the time does Jadeja, this time Dilshan oes back and pushes a single to mid-on.

11.5

Jadeja to Jayawardene, no run, fuller and slower, Mahela leans out to defend.

11.6

Jadeja to Jayawardene, OUT, Mahela's gifted his wicket. Trying to be too cheeky. Did he not know that there was a man at slip? He leans back and looks to play the late cut and steers it straight at Sehwag's face. Sehwag puts his hands up, parries it up and holds well. Did he whisper, "Did you see my catch?" as he trotted in with his captain to celebrate with Jadeja? Wicket against the run of play.

DPMD Jayawardene c Sehwag b Jadeja 22 (50m 33b 1x4 1x6) SR: 66.66

End of over 12 (1 run) Sri Lanka 49/1 (RR: 4.08)
     RA Jadeja    1-0-1-1

12.1

Yadav to Dilshan, no run, back of a length outside off, Dilshan hacks it into the off side. Point and cover have it covered.

12.2

Yadav to Dilshan, no run, 148 kph on a sharp indipper that beats Dilshan for pace. He misses the flick and is hit on the pad, but it was going down the leg side.

12.3

Yadav to Dilshan, no run, fuller length, Dilshan is again late on the shot and misses the flick.

12.4

Yadav to Dilshan, 1 run, short ball, Dilshan cracks it square for a single.

Sanga is due. Big time.

12.5

Yadav to Sangakkara, no run, full length ball outside off, Sanga defends to the off side.

"Sehwag's Avg (8.75) this series is less than any other player from Sri Lanka except Malinga. Sad." Telling, eh Shrikant.

12.6

Yadav to Sangakkara, no run, back of a length, nice robust start to Yadav's spell today. Sanga stays in the crease and defends.

End of over 13 (1 run) Sri Lanka 50/1 (RR: 3.84)
KC Sangakkara    0* (2b)      UT Yadav    2-0-8-0
TM Dilshan    26* (43b 2x4)      RA Jadeja    1-0-1-1

Jadeja's removed from the attack after taking the wicket. Here's Ashwin now. Round the stumps.

13.1

Ashwin to Dilshan, 1 run, short of a length on the stumps, Dilshan stays back and pushes a single through mid-on.

A slip for Sanga now. A man with hair covering his face in the crowd. Sid Monga is that you?

13.2

Ashwin to Sangakkara, 1 run, strays down the leg side and allows Sanga an easy single to open his account.

13.3

Ashwin to Dilshan, 1 run, flighted wide of off stump, Dilshan drags it across the line for one more to midwicket.

13.4

Ashwin to Sangakkara, no run, pitched up on the stumps, Sanga works it to mid-on.

13.5

Ashwin to Sangakkara, 1 run, back of a length and straightening down the line. Sanga nudges it square for a single.

13.6

Ashwin to Dilshan, 1 run, tossed up on the pads. Five easy singles in Ashwin's first over. Dilshan turns it off the pads.

End of over 14 (5 runs) Sri Lanka 55/1 (RR: 3.92)
TM Dilshan    29* (46b 2x4)      R Ashwin    1-0-5-0
KC Sangakkara    2* (5b)      UT Yadav    2-0-8-0

Mind you, Ponting's average is poorer than Sehwag's.

14.1

Yadav to Dilshan, FOUR, short ball, murdered. The corpse of the ball can be found at the square leg boundary. Dilshan was set up for the pull as soon as Yadav dropped short, and he wallops it with a vengeance.

14.2

Yadav to Dilshan, no run, 143 kph, beats Dilshan for pace with a fuller length once again.

14.3

Yadav to Dilshan, 1 run, 145 kph, Dilshan stays back and tries to turn it square, but gets a leading edge. The ball goes in the air for a bit but bounces before it reaches the outfield at square leg.

14.4

Yadav to Sangakkara, 2 runs, short ball to Sanga now, who guides the pull behind square for a couple more.

14.5

Yadav to Sangakkara, 1 run, full ball wide of off stump, Sanga jams it to the off side for a single.

14.6

Yadav to Dilshan, no run, yet again, Dilshan misses a quick ball slipping down the leg side. Umesh should consider getting one of these on the money.

15.5

Ashwin to Sangakkara, no run, tossed up on the stumps, Sanga defends off the front foot.

15.6

Ashwin to Sangakkara, 1 run, tossed up outside off stump, Sanga drives through mid-off for another single.

End of over 16 (3 runs) Sri Lanka 66/1 (RR: 4.12)
KC Sangakkara    7* (10b)      R Ashwin    2-0-8-0
TM Dilshan    35* (53b 3x4)      UT Yadav    3-0-16-0

16.1

Yadav to Sangakkara, no run, Yadav goes full and wide of off stump, Sanga drives through the off side.

To the many people who pointed out that Ponting is out of the Aus side.. Sehwag is much younger than Ponting. And something tells me, the majority doesn't want to get into the age debate now.

16.2

Yadav to Sangakkara, 1 run, width outside off to Sanga, the field is back on the off side. Sanga's pleasing cover drive finds the fielder in the deep.

16.3

Yadav to Dilshan, no run, he's ramping the pace up. 149 kph, Dilshan defends from the crease to the off side.

16.4

Yadav to Dilshan, 1 run, on Dilshan's pads, he works it square for a single.

16.5

Yadav to Sangakkara, FOUR, we've seen some beautiful pull shots today, but none as good as this from Sanga. 145 kph and dropped short, Sanga leans back and whirls it away smoothly through square leg.

16.6

Yadav to Sangakkara, no run, goes very full now wide of off stump, and Sanga digs it out to point.

End of over 17 (6 runs) Sri Lanka 72/1 (RR: 4.23)

That Sehwag discussion was going no where. The Indian selectors have some tough calls to make, and Sehwag isn't the only man they will be discussing when they sit down to pick the Asia Cup squad. Drinks in Hobart.

17.1

Ashwin to Dilshan, no run

17.2

Ashwin to Dilshan, 1 run, back of a length on the pads, Dilshan tucks it square for a single.

This is the highest 2nd wicket stand at the Bellerive Oval now.

39.1

Yadav to Dilshan, 1 run, yorker from Yadav, Dilshan punches it past short cover for a single.

39.2

Yadav to Sangakkara, 1 run, Sanga completely mistimes a lofted drive, but it drops well short of Tendulkar as he runs in from long-off.

39.3

Yadav to Dilshan, 2 runs, short ball to Dilshan, he slaps it behind square for a couple more.

39.4

Yadav to Dilshan, no run, 130 kph, and the ball cuts in from outside off. Dilshan defends off the front foot and inner edges to the leg side...

39.5

Yadav to Dilshan, no run, another slower ball, 117 kph and Dilshan defends to cover. He's one short of a 100.

39.6

Yadav to Dilshan, 1 leg bye, Taufel takes for ever to signal the legbye after refusing the lbw shout! That was close. Dilshan was trapped on the crease by a pacy indipper, but was he in front? Legbye taken to the off side. Dilshan has strike. It went over the stumps says HawkEye.

End of over 40 (5 runs) Sri Lanka 215/1 (RR: 5.37)
TM Dilshan    99* (130b 8x4)      UT Yadav    7-0-42-0

Jadeja comes on now .. A tempter for Dilshan?

40.1

Jadeja to Dilshan, no run, tossed up on the stumps, Dilshan works it down the track.

40.2

Jadeja to Dilshan, 1 run, a most un-Dilshan like century to Dilshan, and only the second of the series by anyone. He pushes a full ball through mid-on and gets the single away. That's his first in this country.

40.3

Jadeja to Sangakkara, 1 run, full ball outside off, Sanga drags it away through mid-on for one to Kohli. They want two, but Kohli's return is sharp.

40.4

Jadeja to Dilshan, 1 run, Dilshan lunges out and looks to drive inside out into the covers.

40.5

Jadeja to Sangakkara, FOUR, this is slog season. Three men back on the leg side, but Sanga had to find one of the many gaps between them once Jadeja tossed it up on leg stump. He went over square leg this time.

40.6

Jadeja to Sangakkara, FOUR, just for fun, Sanga goes straighter this time and easily eludes long-on. Tossed up on the stumps, it spins into his slot and allows Sanga a happy swing. The wheels came off a while back, now they are being sold for their scrap value.

End of over 41 (11 runs) Sri Lanka 226/1 (RR: 5.51)
KC Sangakkara    95* (80b 7x4 2x6)      RA Jadeja    9-0-43-1
TM Dilshan    101* (133b 8x4)      UT Yadav    7-0-42-0

41.1

Kumar to Dilshan, FOUR, and now the buyer is refusing to take the wheels even at throwaway prices. PK slips down the leg side now and Dilshan heaves it along past fine leg for four.

41.2

Kumar to Dilshan, 2 runs, back of a length outside off, Dilshan forces through the off side for a couple more.

41.3

Kumar to Dilshan, 1 run, tossed up on the stumps, driven down the ground for a single.

41.6

Kumar to Sangakkara, 1 run, PK attempts a yorker at long last, and Sanga inside-edges it past the stumps for a single.

End of over 42 (10 runs) Sri Lanka 236/1 (RR: 5.61)
KC Sangakkara    97* (82b 7x4 2x6)      P Kumar    7-0-39-0
TM Dilshan    109* (137b 9x4)      RA Jadeja    9-0-43-1

The Americans don't understand cricket as it is. Now try explaining to them that India are world champions. Zaheer Khan comes back on.

42.1

Khan to Sangakkara, 1 run, a low swinging yorker, Sanga manages to advance and take it on the full. Single to midwicket.

42.2

Khan to Dilshan, no run, Dilshan takes one in the soft spot, trying to swing Xaheer's length ball to the leg side. Did he edge that? Else he's taken the full impact. Ouch.

42.3

Khan to Dilshan, 1 run, over-pitched outside off, Dilshan stays back and pushes a single to mid-off for one.

42.4

Khan to Sangakkara, 2 runs, Sanga tries hard to get out on 98, and then on 99, but manages to get to 100! He was trying to work Zak to the leg side from outside off, but got a leading edge that took off, but landed safely away from point and third man. And then he had to run in and dive for the second.. A direct hit could have stopped him short. A glorious exhibition of batting this.

42.5

Khan to Sangakkara, 1 run, Sanga punches through the off side for one more.

42.6

Khan to Dilshan, FOUR, Zaheer drifts onto the pads for the umpteenth time. He's done it more times today than he did through out the tour. Dilshan happily heaves it along to fine leg for four.

End of over 43 (9 runs) Sri Lanka 245/1 (RR: 5.69)
TM Dilshan    114* (140b 10x4)      Z Khan    7-0-42-0
KC Sangakkara    101* (85b 7x4 2x6)      P Kumar    7-0-39-0

43.1

Kumar to Sangakkara, FOUR, length ball in Sanga's pads now, bashed through midwicket for four more. Sanga is trying to make this as classy as possible, but this is violent all the same.

43.2

Kumar to Sangakkara, OUT, India surprise themselves with a wicket. PK slips a slow yorker past Sanga's swipe to leg and it disturbs on the stumps. Sanga's found top form ahead of Sri Lanka's last league game, and most likely, the finals.

KC Sangakkara b Kumar 105 (119m 87b 8x4 2x6) SR: 120.68

Thisara Perera is promoted ahead of the lot. He's going to have a big swing for sure.

43.3

Kumar to Perera, 1 run, back of a length outside off, Thisara carves it behind square for a single.

43.4

Kumar to Dilshan, 1 run, direct hit from mid-off, but Dilshan's made it. He played the shot too hard, and had to hustle, but got in, in time.

43.5

Kumar to Perera, 1 run, pitched up on off stump, Thisara guides it through the covers for a single.

43.6

Kumar to Dilshan, 1 run, low full toss on the middle stump, Dilshan wants strike. He drives down to long-on for one.

End of over 44 (8 runs) Sri Lanka 253/2 (RR: 5.75)
TM Dilshan    116* (142b 10x4)      P Kumar    8-0-47-1
NLTC Perera    2* (2b)      Z Khan    7-0-42-0

44.1

Khan to Dilshan, SIX, this is why Dilshan wanted strike. He's taken on the short leg side boundary and cleared it easily. Zaheer angles it across at a friendly pace, Dilshan leans across and muscled this high over the ropes.

44.2

Khan to Dilshan, 2 runs, and a couple more now, over-pitched on the stumps and drilled down the ground.

44.3

Khan to Dilshan, 2 runs, back of a length, Dilshan swipes to the leg side for two more.

The ball is swinging both ways says Akram. The bat is swinging even more wildly.

44.4

Khan to Dilshan, 1 run, gets a yorker in place outside off, and it is jammed to the off side for a single.

44.5

Khan to Perera, 1 run, back of a length outside off, Thisara drops it to the off side for a single.

44.6

Khan to Dilshan, 1 run, Zaheer angles in from wide of the crease, on the pads and whipped square for another single.

End of over 45 (13 runs) Sri Lanka 266/2 (RR: 5.91)
TM Dilshan    128* (147b 10x4 1x6)      Z Khan    8-0-55-0

"Fall of wickets 1-49, 2-249. Can we see the 3rd on 449," wonders Santha.

45.1

Kumar to Dilshan, 1 wide, PK is bowling at the tenth stumps. Another wide down the leg side.

45.1

Kumar to Dilshan, FOUR, a low full toss at 130 kph when you are in the 120s. What more can you ask for? Dilshan walks away from his stumps to create room and thumps it through extra cover for four.

45.2

Kumar to Dilshan, 2 runs, goes full and straight now as Dilshan backs away and he works a couple more through midwicket.

45.3

Kumar to Dilshan, 5 wides, PK is swinging the ball so much that even has no clue now what it is doing. Several wides wide of off stump now.

Just in case India's batsmen had hopes of winning with a bonus point, the bowlers are ensuring such dreams will die a quick death.

45.3

Kumar to Dilshan, 1 run, OUT, a third wicket now, once again gifted. Thisara was trying to get a second run that was virtually impossible. Dilshan played it down the ground, and the throw came in from long-on. PK had the time to collect and break the stumps. Thisara was just outside the crease as he dived in full length.

NLTC Perera run out 3 (13m 3b 0x4 0x6) SR: 100.00

45.4

Kumar to Dilshan, 1 run, back of a length outside off, Mathews nearly gone without facing a ball as Dilshan chops to point and takes off. Jadeja misses the stumps this time.

45.5

Kumar to Mathews, 2 runs, just when you thought India were yet to concede an overthrow in this deluge of mediocrity, they do. Back of a length outside off, Mathews pushes to point for a single. A needless throw from the fielder misses the stumps and they pinch a second.

45.6

Kumar to Mathews, 1 run, The Berlin wall was still up when PK began this over. It has ended now. Mathews tucks off the pads behind square for a single.

End of over 46 (17 runs) Sri Lanka 283/3 (RR: 6.15)
AD Mathews    3* (2b)      P Kumar    9-0-64-1

104 off the last 10 overs. Four more to go. Here's Yadav.

46.1

Yadav to Mathews, 1 run, full, fast and tailing in. Whipped with the angle through square leg for one.

46.2

Yadav to Dilshan, SIX, this reminds me of Ponting murdering India's fast bowlers in the 2003 World Cup final now. Dilshan has missed many of Yadav's fast and straight balls today, but not this one. He stayed deep in the crease and bludgeoned this into the grass banks beyond midwicket.

46.3

Yadav to Dilshan, 1 run, back of a length outside off, Dilshan heaves a single into the covers.

46.4

Yadav to Mathews, 1 run, Mathews inner edges a ball that nips in from outside off, but it eludes the stumps.

46.5

Yadav to Dilshan, 1 run, Dilshan again stays deep and tries to hammer a length ball to the leg side, but he can't get under it this time.

46.6

Yadav to Mathews, FOUR, Mathews plays a stunning stroke for his first four. He spots Yadav's inswing early, stays put in the crease and drives it against the deviation through the covers. You could see smoke coming out of the ball as it disappeared through the covers.

End of over 47 (14 runs) Sri Lanka 297/3 (RR: 6.31)
AD Mathews    9* (5b 1x4)      UT Yadav    8-0-56-0

Raina comes on now. Round the stumps.

47.1

Raina to Dilshan, 1 run, Dilshan tries a reverse sweep now, short ball he gets a leading edge that loops up behind Dhoni, but short third man can't get there.

47.2

Raina to Mathews, 1 run, back of a length, Mathews punches through mid-on for a single.

47.3

Raina to Dilshan, 1 run, the 300 comes up. Dilshan heaves through the leg side

47.4

Raina to Mathews, 2 runs, Mathews stays back to some flat stuff and punches through the mid off area for a couple.

47.5

Raina to Mathews, 1 run, Mathews tries to slog to the leg side, but can't make solid connection. Single taken.

47.6

Raina to Dilshan, 1 run, Dilshan presses forward and drives through mid-on for one.

End of over 48 (7 runs) Sri Lanka 304/3 (RR: 6.33)
TM Dilshan    147* (157b 11x4 2x6)      SK Raina    1-0-7-0
AD Mathews    13* (8b 1x4)      UT Yadav    8-0-56-0

48.1

Khan to Dilshan, 2 runs, over-pitched and swinging in, Dilshan has a single every time he works it to the leg side, but he wants two. And gets it quite easily.

48.2

Khan to Dilshan, 1 run, Dilshan has 150 now. And he took a long time to step up into gear. Over-pitched on the pads again, it tailed in late, but Dilshan worked it with the angle through square leg for one. And to think Dilshan nearly missed this game with a hand injury.

48.3

Khan to Mathews, 1 run, back of a length to Mathews, who works it to midwicket for one.

48.4

Khan to Dilshan, 1 run, slower ball, heaved to the leg side without timing for a single.

48.5

Khan to Mathews, OUT, Mathews is gone? He tries to lash to the leg side from wide of off stump, but he gets a top edge. The ball loops up to long off, where Ashwin runs in and tumbles ahead to take a fine catch. That's India's first bright moment all day.

AD Mathews c Ashwin b Khan 14 (14m 10b 1x4 0x6) SR: 140.00

48.6

Khan to Dilshan, 1 run, Dilshan tries the swing to leg again, and doesn't time the low full toss. Single to leg side. Is that Zaheer Khan's last ball on Australian soil...?

End of over 49 (6 runs) Sri Lanka 310/4 (RR: 6.32)
TM Dilshan    152* (161b 11x4 2x6)      Z Khan    9-0-61-1
LD Chandimal    0* (0b)      SK Raina    1-0-7-0

49.1

Raina to Dilshan, 1 run, short ball outside off, came through too slowly for Dilshan to time the pull. Single to the deep.

49.2

Raina to Chandimal, 1 run, speared in wide of off stump, Chandimal carves it past Dhoni to short third man for a single.

49.3

Raina to Dilshan, 1 run, Raina bowls some smart stuff here, Dilshan can't get under his quick back of length balls and mistimes the slog to deep midwicket. It lands short.

49.4

Raina to Chandimal, 1 run, Chandimal moves across the stumps and works a ball to the leg side for a single.

49.5

Raina to Dilshan, SIX, Dilshan equals his highest score in ODIs. The last time, Sri Lanka got 411 and lost the game. He gets nicely under the length this time and bulldozes it over midwicket for six.

49.6

Raina to Dilshan, no run, a dot ball to end the carnage. Short and fast, it slips under Dilshan's attempted heave to the leg side.

Breathless stuff in that innings. The over-rate was good, the run-rate was better. The bowling was atrocious. For those of you still wondering, India need 321 runs in 240 balls to stay alive in this tournament. The innings report is getting updated here.

Here's some spooky stuff. The last time Dilshan hit 160, Sri Lanka lost the game after falling painfully short of chasing 415. Against India. That happened on my third day at Cricinfo. He's done it again today, my last day at Cricinfo.

End of over 50 (10 runs) Sri Lanka 320/4
TM Dilshan    160* (165b 11x4 3x6)      SK Raina    2-0-17-0
