Commonwealth Bank Series - 12th match

Australia v Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka won by 9 runs

Game time. Well almost. Adi: "Is it true that Sirlanka only need 1 point to go through???" Well they only need half a point, or a quarter even. Anything more than zero will do.

Mahela Jayawardene and Tillakaratne Dilshan, both wearing bandannas under their helmets, stride to the middle. Jayawardene's is black, Dilshan's blue, for those of you who want to know.

James Pattinson, who hasn't played since the Tests against India because of a foot injury, has the first new ball, and is bowling from over the wicket.

2.05 pm "Indians can go home and take some rest as SL is going to win this match. Generally whoever bats first in MCG and scores above 220, they are going to be winners," says Kenche. "Mahela chose two spinners and they will be handy to take 10 Aus wickets as the ball doesn't come on to the bat especially under lights."

Arjun: "Rare moment for Australia: They will experience what it feels like to have a billion more fans!"

Subu: "This is coming from an Indian supporter. I hope SL wins today otherwise the shameful performance in the test matches will be forgotten and life will go on in the mediocrity satisfied Indian Cricket." So Arjun, that's 999,999,999 supporters for Australia then.

1.50 pm Shane Watson's at the toss, so Michael Clarke is resting. Mahela Jayawardene has won the toss and Sri Lanka will bat. Jayawardene says the pitch looks dry and he has two spinners in his team. Farveez Maharoof is injured and has been replaced by the offspinner Sachitra Senanayake.

Brett Lee's not playing today, James Pattinson is. Mark Nicholas asked Watson about Lee's toe at the toss, Watson smiled and said, "Well it's still there, that's a good thing."

Nicholas: Is there a team - either India or Sri Lanka - that you'd prefer to play in the finals?

Watson pauses, smiles, and says, "No."

Nicholas: Are you sure?

Watson, another pause, some thought and then, "Yes."

1.45 pm Hello, welcome to ESPNcricinfo's ball-by-ball coverage of the final league game of the CB Series. Australia are already through to the finals, Sri Lanka need a point from today's game to join them, and India are waiting and watching, or shopping. The toss is in five minutes.

There has been some rain in Melbourne this week but the weather is fair at the moment. Daniel Brettig has more in his preview of the game. Wasim Akram, on Star Cricket, reckons 260 will be a good score on this pitch, and he says win toss and bat.

There are a couple of questions over Australia's XI today. Will Michael Clarke continue to rest to be fully fit for the finals, and will Brett Lee play despite a broken foot? James Pattinson needs to play so someone will have to make way for him.

Hilfenhaus to Jayawardene, OUT, a direct hit and Jayawardene is gone! He jumped on the back foot and opened the face to play the ball towards slip. I think it was Dilshan who called for a very risky single and Jayawardene responded after a moment's hesitation. Hussey from second slip pounced on the ball with one hand and let rip at the bowler's end, his direct hit finding Mahela so far out of his crease that the third umpire wasn't needed.

It was a bit shorter too and bounced and straightened just a fraction. Dilshan had to go onto the back foot and was surprised by the bounce as much as the change in line. He just poked at it and got a thin edge through to the keeper

Perera swung hard and hit the ball high towards deep midwicket, Hussey ran back and settled under the ball and took the catch inside play. He realised he was going to go over the boundary so he threw the ball up, stepped over the rope, stepped back in, and caught the ball again.

6.10 pm Sri Lanka have finished with 238, a score that is less than par on this pitch. They were set for at least 40 more when Sangakkara and Chandimal were steering the innings. But they fell away after that partnership. Christian wrecked the innings with a hat-trick and finished with 5 for 31. Pattinson was making a comeback from injury and he took four wickets as well.

So Sri Lanka need to keep Australia to 238 or less to make the finals. I'll be back in 30 minutes for the chase.
