Compaq Cup - Final

Sri Lanka v India

India won by 46 runs

Welcome to the final of the Compaq Cup.

While we wait for the toss, do read Sid Talya's stats piece : Win the toss, win the match . As simple as that eh?

And here is a neat opportunity for you. Want to write on the Champions Trophy for Cricinfo? If you're going to be at the grounds for any of the games, you might have a chance to. Details here.

Toss: Dhoni has won the toss and will bat. "Of course we would bat. But it's just a start. We need to put up a good total. I would prefer a day game here in Sri Lanka ... Virat Kohli replaces Dinesh Karthik. Some how, we have not played well in the recent finals. It's difficult to say exactly why. I guess it's something that has accumulated over the years where we have lost a few finals."

Sanga: "You can't have everything going your way every time. Today, we need to do it under lights. Discipline, line and lengths and pick up some early wickets. We approach all the game similarly and hopefully, we would do well today."

Pitch report Ranil on Ten Sports: "Hardly any grass. It's very dry. Nice and flat. It would be good for about 70 overs and it then starts getting slow. Scoring would then get difficult. The team batting second should restrict the opposition to around 250."

Shiv gets in the first rant mail. Magnificent one too. : "The prognostics of a pitch report are hardly insightful these days. Listen to any pitch report in the past 3 years, its just the same - Day-night game: Good batting track, but pitch could slow down, the ball might not come on to the bat, and should offer spin as the game progresses, so 250 would be par score. Day game: True wicket ( whatever that means! ). Good batting wicket. Team batting first would look to score 270+. If it is overcast, read as "the pitch could offer some assistance to the fast bowlers early on. Does it take an expert to say this, really?"

And big news: Rahul Dravid walks out to open with Tendulkar.

Vyaasa joins hands with Shiv: "Hope India wins this one. I agree with Shiv's rant. One day pitch reporters have become as incompetent as stock market analysts and weathermen nowadays. I have lost track of the number of times that the commentators have called 220 a safe score only to see a 300+ score on the board. "Heavy selling prompted investors to lose confidence in the market" , "A depression in Bay of Bengal is causing the inclement weather"- excuses for forecasts going wrong- sounds familiar? Is is a surprise that the all the major crises in our little world- Climate, recession and ODI (Ok, I fit it in) have similar people at the helm?"

More mails pouring in. Most of you don't seem to prefer Dravid in the team. There are few supporting him also. Like this one from Ravikant: "Dravid is the only batsman in the current squad who can play in such testing conditions. Even in last match after his dismissal the rest of young Dhoni brigade has got out like a pack of cards."

7.6

Thushara to Tendulkar, FOUR, Top shot! Marginally short of length, on the off stump, but Tendulkar stands tall to punch it deliciously through covers.

Malinga to bowl. Much fun. Gautam: "India's technically most sound, and most equipped batsman to play on any kind of pitches, cannot be left out for the likes of Suresh Rainas ans Rohit sharmas, sighting future preparations as the reason. He saw off the lethal new ball danger Shane Bond in the first match; in the second, stood up to the bowling on an uneven pitch when the rest of the team was tumbling; and is now playing with a sense of responsibility and letting Sachin play his natural game. Yet, people are cribbing about his presence in the team and his strike rate. What a shame ! " O k .. that's that. I think we have had enough mails on Dravid issue.
