Russell Domingo realised in his early 20s that playing cricket was not for him, after he failed to make it at Eastern Province. So he took up coaching and obtained his first qualification at 22. After serving his time in the age-group structures he got his big break in 2005, when Mickey Arthur was appointed national coach. Domingo was appointed Warriors' coach and he employed Gary Kirsten as a consultant while there. Domingo set out a three-year plan for the underperforming franchise and in 2009-10 they won both the 40-over and 20-over competitions. Warriors went on to finish runners-up in the 2010 Champions League. In 2011, when Kirsten was appointed national coach, he named Domingo his assistant with a vision of grooming him to take over. Domingo was named South Africa's T20 coach in December 2012, and succeeded Kirsten in all formats in May 2013. He was South Africa's first coach of colour.
