Scott Elstone, a batting allrounder, joined Derbyshire at the end of the 2013 season on a summer incremental contract after being released by Nottinghamshire. When he was released by Derbyshire midway through the 2016 season, he joined the ranks of England's 12th Man Heroes whose career never progressed.

Elstone enjoyed a brief moment of fame at Trent Bridge as a substitute fielder for England in the second Test against India in 2011, taking two catches on the boundary to remove Suresh Raina and Harbhajan Singh as England charged to victory, although he dropped one in between. At 21 years and 52 days, he was the youngest English substitute fielder to take a catch in England since Ben Spendlove snaffled South Africa's Gerhardus Liebenberg off Dominic Cork in the first Test at Edgbaston in 1998. Neither Spendlove nor Gary Pratt - who ran out Ricky Ponting during the 2005 Ashes - enjoyed successful county careers.

Elstone was a product of Nottinghamshire's academy system and joined them in 2010. He made his first-team debut in the CB40 against Scotland in August 2010, making an unbeaten 18 from 12 deliveries.

After his introduction in 2010, a winter playing club cricket in Australia honed his skills further and, as a lower-order batsman and outstanding fielder, he featured in 15 domestic Twenty20 fixtures in 2011 and captained Nottinghamshire to victory in the Second Eleven Trophy, seeing them over the line with an unbeaten 69 to beat Lancashire at Liverpool. But his opportunities in the senior side were limited and he was released at the end of the 2012 season.

He had a brief spell with the Unicorns in 2013, compiling a List A career-best 75 not out against Somerset. This plus promising displays for Derbyshire's 2nd XI earned him a contract. His maiden Championship hundred arrived in downbeat circumstances in a rain-wrecked early match in Cardiff against a Glamorgan attack largely concerned with upping their over rate.
