Calum Haggett was born in Taunton, went to Millfield School and grew up playing for Bridgwater CC in the Western Premier League. He toured Bangladesh with England Under-19s in 2009 but, during a routine screening at Loughborough at the start of 2010, an aortic root dilatation and a leaking heart valve were discovered, which required open-heart surgery. Perhaps because of this, Haggett's career never took off with Somerset, his home county - his only appearances came in the Caribbean T20 at the start of 2011 - but he was given a second chance by Kent. His debut came against Cardiff MCCU at the start of the 2013 season and he maintained his place for the start of the County Championship.
