Du Plessis to replace Gayle at Somerset

13

Faf du Plessis will be joining Somerset - subject to all necessary clearance - as their second overseas player for the FLt20. Du Plessis, the 27-year-old South Africa allrounder, will replace Chris Gayle, who has pulled out of his deal with the club in order to make himself available for the West Indies.

As things stand, Somerset hope that du Plessis will be available for the duration of the competition. He may, however, be involved in South Africa's five-match T20 series against Zimbabwe that runs until June 24. Somerset's T20 campaign begins on June 13, meaning du Plessis could miss as many as five games.

"We have signed him subject to clearance," Brian Rose, Somerset's director of cricket, told ESPNcricinfo. "We are waiting to hear whether he will be required by South Africa but, even if he is, we are unlikely to sign another overseas player."

Why indian players not included in this tournament

@Munkeymomo on (May 04 2012, 11:12 AM GMT) Yeah , also seems strange that there was no visa problem last year but there is this year. Maybe it was because he was only required for a few games last season but then again it seems strange how AM and FDP were ok.

  • Munkeymomo on May 4, 2012, 11:12 GMT

@JG2704 Yea he was excellent with bat and ball last year, a real fighter, I would have really liked to see him back. All I have heard is that the visa thing didn't get resolved in time for the start of the season (plan was he would replace Philander for all comps at one point). I asked him about it on twitter but didn't hear back. :p

@Munkeymomo on (May 04 2012, 06:29 AM GMT) You don't know what happened to RVDM ? I thought he was really decent for us in the champions league (better than Pollard IMO). I know there were some visa issues which seemed strange as he played in England last year?

  • Munkeymomo on May 4, 2012, 6:29 GMT

@frozendilemma/JG2704 Stirling plays for Middlesex. All the good Irish and Scottish players play for counties.

De Plessis is 27 and has never played T20 for SA. Just because he is playing well in the IPL doesn't mean he will be playing for SA in June. Wish Somerset could get Van De Merwe sorted as the 2 overseas player. Don't understand why he can't get the visa or whatever the problem was.

  • JG2704 on May 3, 2012, 17:37 GMT

FDP looked decent from what I saw of him in IPL. Does anyone know what happened To Van Der Merwe ? I know he had visa probs for some reason - anyone know any further details? I preferred him to Pollard personally

  • JG2704 on May 3, 2012, 15:25 GMT

@frozendilemma on (May 03 2012, 13:55 PM GMT) Not sure about Stirling but KOB was at Glocs last year. Not sure if he still is. We already have Dockerell there so maybe promote this to another county

  • StoneRose on May 3, 2012, 15:04 GMT

WHy sign him, he will obviously be required by SA

  • sephotrig on May 3, 2012, 14:43 GMT

@frozendilemma, both of them have county contracts, Stirling at Middlesex and O'Brien at Gloucestershire, so i would guess that counties have showed interest in their talents.
