Mark Ramprakash has been dropped by Surrey for their next County Championship match against Somerset following a poor start to the season which cumulated in a pair against Worcestershire last week.
Ramprakash, 42, has scored 62 runs in eight Championship innings and his pair at New Road, completed when he was caught down the leg side off Richard Jones as he was out twice in a day, was just the third of his first-class career.
Chris Adams, the Surrey cricket manager, said it was not a decision he took lightly. "We have not selected Mark Ramprakash for the game against Somerset which was a very difficult decision to make," he said. "Mark has had a tough start to the season and has not made the impact with the bat that he would have wanted to.
"But you do not score the amount of runs that Mark has without knowing your own game and I know he will work hard to find his form again. The challenge now for Mark is to push hard to regain his place for the remainder of the season."
The difficult start to this season followed a 2011 campaign that was also below Ramprakash's usual high standards. He was hindered by injury during the year and made 700 runs at 33.33 in 13 Championship matches with one hundred.

remember another Oval resident going on into his 50s still scoreing tons , Ramps 'll be back love to see him still there pushing runs through the covers for a few more years to come

And this season has 4, 7, 6 (both on the flat pitches of the UAE), 24. 9, 17, 1, 1, 10, 13, 24* (these last two when playing for the 2nd XI to find some form), 0 & 0. It's a desperate sequence and not just down to early-season pitches.

Either Ramprakash wasn't good enough at the start of the season or he should have had longer to find form. Poor selection and poor management. Now any batsman at Surrey is going to worry that a few low scores means being dropped...
Posted by maximum6 on (May 15, 2012, 19:03 GMT)I wondered if he would get it back after that horrendous footballing injury.Stiil it took KP ages to come back from his Achilles tendon operation and he's okay now,so maybe there is hope. I guess he probably thinks one is a long time retired so why do it yet.
Posted byRamps with both Chris Gayle and Du Plessi renaging on Somerset deals, perhaps you could request a transfer to Somerset for the rest of the season. With their injury problems they could use you. Chances are you could find form in the shorter format (Yes you are good enough to do as Ganguly does) you could really set yourself up for a $2.5M over the next two seasons in the IPL.

His dignity isn't diminished in the slightest by playing as long as he can. This is his life! Passion! and Job. If there's a young pretender there wanting a shot, as they say in boxing let him take the belt.
Posted by CricketingStargazer on (May 15, 2012, 13:04 GMT)In his heart of hearts he knows that he should have gone out at the top at the end of 2010 rather than accept yet another contract extension. Too many players have learnt the hard way that there comes a point where it suddenly just goes and you can't cope any longer at the top level. This isn't just a patch of dodgy form: he has barely scored a run since the end of July last season and that is a fair number of games, many of them on benign pitches in a team that was sweeping all before it. The trick is to retire with dignity when people wonder why you have gone and before people start asking why you did not retire earlier.
