John Alexander Kennedy Cochran, died in Johannesburg on June 15, 1987, aged 77. A tall, well-built fast bowler, able to move the ball both ways off the pitch, he opened the bowling against England at Durban in the final Test of the 1930-31 series. His 23 overs cost 47 runs without producing a wicket and he did not bowl in the second innings. It was his only match for South Africa. In a first-class career of three seasons, during which he represented Transvaal and Griqualand West, he took fifteen wickets at 24.06.
