Sarwan replaces Hoggard at Leics

ESPNcricinfo staff

The career of Matthew Hoggard, the former England bowler, would appear to be drawing to a close after Leicestershire announced Ramnaresh Sarwan would take over the four-day captaincy for next season.

Hoggard, who joined Leicestershire in 2010, will enter the final year of his contract in 2013. He has now relinquished the captaincy in all three formats and, at the age of 35, his playing days could be numbered after a 16-year career. He described the change as the "right time to be handing over the reins".

Hoggard led Leicestershire to a third T20 title in 2011 but only took 24 first-class wickets at 28.79 in 2012 - the second-lowest haul since his first full season in 1998 - and stood down from the one-day captaincy in July, with Josh Cobb taking up the role.

Cobb will now be vice-captain of the Championship side, which will be led by Sarwan, who committed himself to Leicestershire by extending his one-year deal to a three-year arrangement.

Chief executive, Mike Siddall, said it was an opportunity to "put a succession plan in place for the future", with head coach Phil Whitticase adding: "I've really enjoyed working with Matthew over the past three years, especially during our successful T20 campaign. It is important for everyone to get behind Ronnie as we look to take the club forward."

What ethos is that. Allowing a puppet as captain. Sammy cannot make WI BEST 11 IN ANY FORMAT. IF HE RELIQUISHES THE CAPTAINCY TOMORROW HE WILL BE NOW WHERE NEAR THAT 11. Sarwan or Ramdin should be captain.

If the team is not been picked by performance then we are heading down the wrong path.Sherwin Campbell would of been a world class batsman if the selectors/WICB did not drop Desmond Haynes.Powell and Barath have performed well batting with Gayle. This cannot be said while batting with Brathwaite. If Sarwan happens to be the leading batman in the CT20 he should be considered for selection. We have the same players for 50 overs and 20/20 and there is no chance given to young bowlers.I do hope that the young bowlers show up and play well.Looking forward to watching the games in St.Lucia.

@ SNIFFLEATHER I disagree with you though. Sarwan should be in WI Test Team. He is the right player to Captain WI. I have nothing agianst Sammy. I like Sammy and like the way he handle thing. He change WI, but WI need some one to cary them forward with all the new player. We dont need to Drop a young player nor a senior player. WI Test Team: Powell, Gayle, Sarwan, DM Bravo, Chanderpaul, Samuels, Ramdin, Roach, Best, Rampal/Edwards and Narine/Permaul. This is a perfect Test 11 for WI

Some have been calling for the reinstatement of Ramnaresh Sarwan for a while now. Personally, I am glad that it hasn't happened. As talented a player as Sarwan has been, and remains, he just doesn't fit into the current West Indian ethos. More importantly, with Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Chris Gayle and latterly Marlon Samuels all performing well for the national side, there can be no further room for senior players like Sarwan or youngsters such as Kieron Powell and Daren Bravo will not gain the necessary exposure required in order to continue their patent progression. I wish Sarwan good luck in his role as captain of Leicestershire, and hope that he continues to enjoy his cricket.

Quite happy for Sarwan! Well deserved. Pray he will be successful both as a captain and as a batsman. Good innings to hoggard as well.
