Toss: Northamptonshire have won the toss and have elected to field first

Hello and welcome to our live ball-by-ball coverage of the first semi-final of the Friends Life t20 competition between Northamptonshire and Essex. Both teams' progression to this point has come rather unexpectedly, both from the pundits and their fans. Northants have made it here largely on the back of performances from Cameron White, Kyle Coetzer and Azharullah's 24 wickets in 10 matches.

Essex, on the other hand, will be wondering just how they managed to get this far, especially after being bundled for a series of low scores earlier in the season, where even their coach had a go at the players. Ryan ten Doeschate's half-centuries against Nottinghamshire and Durham ensured their progression to the semi-finals, while Reece Topley and Shaun Tait have contributed with wickets at vital junctures.

For even more details on how each of the four contenders for the Friends Life t20 progressed here, do check out Alex Winter's preview. We are just expecting the toss in a minute. The weather is looking rather overcast at the moment, with a chance of rain later on. Hopefully the rain gods will be kind to us.
