Friends Life t20 - Final

Northamptonshire v Surrey

Northamptonshire won by 102 runs (D/L method)

Players are lining up the shake hands and Surrey are coming into a huddle. Zafar Ansari's left arm spin is going to open the bowling from the Pavilion End. David Willey has been promoted to pinch hit for Coetzer...

6,40pm Not the best conditions for the final, although we do have gold stumps! It's a decent wicket and neither side should have any trouble with it. What they will have to adjust to are the atmospheric factors, it's very blustery and there is a drop of rain or two in the air. Saying that though, the forecast was very poor for today so that we've had interrupted play until now is quite an achievement.

6.30pm Team news, Surrey are unchanged but Northants have replaced Kyle Coetzer, who has made some runs in this competition, for England Under-19s captain Ben Duckett. Coetzer has a wrist problem; a blow for Northants because Coetzer has 337 at 30.63 in the Flt20 this year. Duckett has only played two T20s this season.

For Northants, they are the feelgood side in county cricket and put in another strong display to see off a dangerous Essex side. 169 was considered a tricky chase but Northants cruised it thanks to Richard Levi and Steven Crook, who has been christened the Ian Botham of Watnage Road by his captain.

Surrey qualified with a tight victory over defending champions Hampshire, a surprise result for many. Hampshire were pretty poor considering they only lost once in the group stage and racked up a total of over 200 in the quarter-final. Their captain, Dimitri Mascarenhas - who is retiring at the end of the season - admitted to failures with the bat.

6.20pm BST Hello everyone and welcome to live coverage of the Friends Life t20 Final from Edgbaston. It's been a busy day and we're on the last leg with Northamptonshire and Surrey one game away from the title. First bloody to Surrey who have won the toss and will bowl first when the match gets underway at 6.45pm.

2.1

Tremlett to Willey, FOUR, full outside off stump and slapped through extra-cover, handsome stroke, well timed

Azhar Mahmood to Willey, FOUR, full just outside off stump, Willey swings the hands through the line and smashes it over mid-off, decent thump

3.2

Azhar Mahmood to Willey, SIX, short ball, pulled, gets a top edge but no-one is down at long leg, doesn't matter anyway cause it carries for six

3.3

Azhar Mahmood to Willey, SIX, fuller on the stumps, Willey clears the front leg and heaves it away again, this over cow corner, another great connection

3.4

Azhar Mahmood to Willey, 1 run, slower ball, 63mph, on leg stump, Willey sees it and runs it out through square leg

3.5

Azhar Mahmood to Levi, OUT, lovely nip-backer and Levi is cleaned up. Touch loose drive outside off, didn't really move his feet and got done by some shape back in off the seam which evaded the inside edge and took out middle and off, nicely bowled by Mahmood

RE Levi b Azhar Mahmood 14 (15m 13b 1x4 1x6) SR: 107.69

Umpires are having a chat about conditions, okay for now it seems...

3.6

Azhar Mahmood to White, no run, length ball on off stump, angled out from the crease to point

Mark Kidger: "Better to finish a shortened game tonight, or to have a full one tomorrow? D/L gets a bit erratic in T20." Indeed it does but I think it would be a horrible anticlimax to come back tomorrow with the ground half-full. Better news, 7.50pm is now being offered as a restart time with the game reduced to 18 overs per side.

7.30pm Latest guestimate is that we might be in for another 20 minutes of rain but it will be clear after that. So hopes remain high of a conclusion tonight, albeit on reduced overs, which would be the first ever final not played over the full 20.

7.20pm RAJ: "is there any reserve day for the finals?" Yes we can come back tomorrow if needed. And if that was the case, it would be a fresh 20-over contest. But they will do everything to get a full game in tonight. Although, for the moment, the rain has just got a touch heavier so perhaps the delay may be a bit longer than initially anticipated. And now there's further rain and the bigger sheets are being rolled back out sadly.

7.10pm Good news, the rain has stopped and the covers are being withdrawn. We think about 15 minutes will be needed to remove the sheets and buzz away the hovercover. In fact, we have a restart time of 7.25pm, so not too long a break and no overs lost.

7pm But now the rain has got too heavy and they're going off. Radar looks clear to me so hopefully this is just a passing heavy shower and it won't be too long before we're back on...

End of over 4 (17 runs) Northamptonshire 37/1
CL White    0* (1b)      Azhar Mahmood    2-0-23-1

Right so we're ready to go again and here's Jade Dernbach to bowl what is now the last Powerplay over...

4.1

Dernbach to Willey, no run, off stump, just back in length, blocked back up the wicket

4.2

Dernbach to Willey, SIX, full length on leg stump, lifted nicely over mid-on, great strike, smooth swing of the bat and times another

4.3

Dernbach to Willey, FOUR, full and wide of off stump now, slower ball but again Willey can free his arms and this is swung over mid-on, great shot again

Bumper I reckon...

4.4

Dernbach to Willey, FOUR, nope it was length again and he pays the price again, a looser swing that comes off a wild outside edge but still gets it well over point for a one bounce four

4.5

Dernbach to Willey, FOUR, around the wicket, same shot again, four more, another free swing at a full ball just wide of off stump, over point it goes again

4.6

Dernbach to Willey, 2 runs, slower ball, ends up being a full toss though, flicked off the stumps out to deep backward square for a couple

End of over 5 (20 runs) Northamptonshire 57/1

End of over 6 (5 runs) Northamptonshire 62/1

Jon Lewis into the attack...

6.1

Lewis to White, 1 run, length just outside off stump, dabbed down to third man

6.2

Lewis to Willey, SIX, full on off stump and smashed down the ground! What striking this is, awesome effort, doing exactly what was asked of him as a pinch hitter, this sails into the stands and brings up the fastest half-century of the season

6.3

Lewis to Willey, 1 run, tries to go again, this off just back of a length on the stumps, tried to go leg side and it bloops off the splice of the bat over the bowler's head just for a single

6.4

Lewis to White, 1 leg bye, good length on middle and leg, turned to the leg side 45 and they skate through for a single

6.5

Lewis to Willey, 2 runs, swung off middle and leg, huge top edge but he gets away with it and gets two to long leg, the fielder who might have been there was up in the circle, no control on the stroke. He who dares...

6.6

Lewis to Willey, no run, slower ball that nips away a touch outside off stump and beats the attempted flick to leg, nicely bowled

End of over 7 (11 runs) Northamptonshire 73/1

7.2

Tremlett to White, 1 run, short of a length, pulled out to deep square leg

7.3

Tremlett to Willey, FOUR, slower ball, 71mph, on off stump, spotted and swung down the ground, very well timed again and this four more, long-on can't get there

7.4

Tremlett to Willey, no run, yorker length, dug out to midwicket

7.5

Tremlett to Willey, 2 runs, full toss just outside off, powerfully struck to mid-off, Mahmood gets down to try and field but only parries it and concedes two, it was very awkward for him but he did save four

7.6

Tremlett to Willey, no run, length ball on middle and leg, tucked a touch hurriedly to midwicket, far better length, cramp him up

End of over 8 (11 runs) Northamptonshire 84/1

Lewis to White, 2 runs, full on middle and leg, firmly pushed past midwicket and they run hard for two as long-on takes a while to get in

8.2

Lewis to White, no run, length ball on off stump, pushed forward to point, funny what happens if you simply put it in a good area

8.3

Lewis to White, 1 run, slower ball, 69mph, on off stump, swung hard at and gets it off a thick inside edge down to long-on

8.4

Lewis to Willey, OUT, wild swing from off stump and this is skied into the covers, Wilson comes in from the deep and takes the catch, a solid take because that swirled around a bit

DJ Willey c Wilson b Lewis 60 (35m 27b 6x4 4x6) SR: 222.22

8.5

Lewis to White, 1 run, length just outside off stump, dabbed down to third man

Back comes de Bruyn from the City End...

9.1

de Bruyn to White, no run, full on off stump, firm block back to the bowler

9.2

de Bruyn to White, 2 runs, length on the stumps, White gave himself room, then adjusted and dabbed into midwicket, all the men are out on the rope so there's room to take two

9.3

de Bruyn to White, 1 run, driven hard from just outside off stump, gets a thick inside edge that runs to short long leg

9.4

de Bruyn to Wakely, FOUR, really well bowled, straightens off a good length and takes a thick outside edge with the batsman square up, too good really because the edge has run through the vacant slips cordon to third man for four

9.5

de Bruyn to Wakely, 1 run, deliberately played this time towards third man, just a singe this time

9.6

de Bruyn to White, 1 run, high full toss, White pushed down to long-on

Healthy over again, building a very good total here...

End of over 10 (9 runs) Northamptonshire 97/2

10.1

Lewis to White, 1 run, length on off stump and White, who's struggled a wee bit, just drops it into the covers and takes off for a quick single

10.2

Lewis to Wakely, 1 run, length ball wide of off stump, cracked out to deep cover

10.3

Lewis to White, 2 runs, another length ball, tight on off stump, this is delicately late cut but not fine enough to beat third man

10.4

Lewis to White, FOUR, another late cut, this is taken out of the keeper's gloves and goes very fine indeed, backstop needed to field that

10.5

Lewis to White, 1 run, straight line, touch fuller too, this is tucked just past midwicket so they take a single

10.6

Lewis to Wakely, 1 run, back on a length, clipped to midwicket who parries on the slide and allows the single

End of over 11 (10 runs) Northamptonshire 107/2

Northants going very well here. Surrey in trouble...

11.1

de Bruyn to Wakely, FOUR, short outside off and swatted over mid-off up in the circle, bit of a baseball bash and enough bat to get it to the rope

11.2

de Bruyn to Wakely, FOUR, a drive to a much fuller ball just outside off and this takes a thin outside edge and runs to third man, the fielder is up so four more

11.3

11.4

de Bruyn to White, no run, another forward press, this time only to backward point

Just six overs to go remember, 18 overs per side thanks to the rain. Dernbach returns...

12.1

Dernbach to Wakely, no run, down the track and tries to flick a length ball to leg, takes a thick inside edge off the pad and runs into the covers

12.2

Dernbach to Wakely, SIX, just back in length and a short arm jab goes flat and long over midwicket, great timing, just a little pick up stroke but middled it

12.3

Dernbach to Wakely, 1 run, full toss low on middle stump, goes to swing it to leg, but gets another inside edge onto pad which runs into the covers and they are able to get a single this time

12.4

Dernbach to White, 1 run, full toss on off stump, driven calmly out to deep cover

12.5

Dernbach to Wakely, no run, lovely slower ball, just 63mph out of the back of the hand, onto leg stump and Wakely can only run it up the wicket

12.6

Dernbach to Wakely, 1 run, full and wide of off stump, driven off the inner half of the bat down to long-off

End of over 13 (9 runs) Northamptonshire 127/2

CL White    27* (24b 2x4)      Z de Bruyn    2-0-20-0

13.1

de Bruyn to Wakely, 1 run, length ball on off stump, forward press out to long-off

13.2

de Bruyn to White, no run, full and well wide of off stump, White had given himself room so it's not a wide

13.3

de Bruyn to White, 1 run, slower ball bouncer, nicely disguised, White was ducking and managed to dab it to the leg side 45 for a single

13.4

de Bruyn to Wakely, FOUR, too leg side and flicked behind square for four, on a length and just helped around the corner, whistles to the fence

13.5

de Bruyn to Wakely, FOUR, very full on off stump, Wakely jams the bat down on it and it fires away past point, what a stroke, how he managed to time that so well I don't know

13.6

de Bruyn to Wakely, 1 run, full and straight and pushed firmly down the ground

Another healthy over, Northants still going ever-so-well, Surrey have no stopgap...

End of over 14 (11 runs) Northamptonshire 138/2

No sign of a return to spin...

14.1

Dernbach to Wakely, FOUR, veryy poor, full on the leg stump and tickled past short long leg, criminal delivery with the fielder up in the circle

14.2

Dernbach to Wakely, 1 wide, slower ball but it's down the leg side and called a wide

14.2

Dernbach to Wakely, 1 run, full and wide of off stump, tries to drive and drags it into midwicket, they take the fielder on and take a quick single

14.3

Dernbach to White, 1 run, slower ball again, 66mph, on off stump, White was through too soon with the drive, managed to drop the hands and force it back past the bowler for a single

14.4

Dernbach to Wakely, SIX, length just outside off and it's only a flick but again Wakely has murdered it right out of the meat of the bat and it sails over midwicket

14.5

Dernbach to Wakely, 1 run, another slower ball, driven down the ground, it flicks the bowler's end stumps and that might have saved four, long-on able to field

14.6

Dernbach to White, 1 run, low full toss just outside off stump, slapped hard out to deep cover

End of over 15 (15 runs) Northamptonshire 153/2

Mahmood can he change anything...

15.1

Azhar Mahmood to White, SIX, nope, length on the stumps and lifted with a glorious swing of the bat and a held follow through over long-off, gloriously timed onto the terraces

Delay because they can't find the ball. They've found it but changed it because it got wet through when it landed in the stand...

15.2

Azhar Mahmood to White, 2 runs, short and pulled hard down to long leg, Lewis slides and fumbles and they get back for a second

Surrey becoming just a little ragged...

15.3

Azhar Mahmood to White, 1 run, short again, nails the pull but Ansari slides and saves very well on the deep square leg fence, good save that

15.4

Azhar Mahmood to Wakely, 1 run, slower ball, 61mph, just outside off, Wakely was going to whack it but pulled out and just rolled it to mid-off for a single

15.5

Azhar Mahmood to White, 1 run, short ball again, another pull and again it only able to find the deep fielder, straight to long leg this goes, missed out

15.6

Azhar Mahmood to Wakely, 1 run, another slower ball, 60mph, cramps White up a little and he backs away and pushes backward of point for a single

End of over 16 (12 runs) Northamptonshire 165/2

16.1

Dernbach to Wakely, FOUR, oh unlucky Jade, yorker length just outside off, Wakely drives and it takes a thin inside edge that slips past Davies to the fine leg fence, fifty for Wakely, top knock

16.2

Dernbach to Wakely, 1 run, full ball wide of off stump, dabbed down towards long-on, only a single available

16.3

Dernbach to White, 1 wide, full and wide of off stump, too wide

16.3

Dernbach to White, 2 runs, full slower ball, batsman reaches down to it and gets a good bat on it down the ground, long-on slides and saves four very well

16.4

Dernbach to White, 1 wide, full and very wide again, just outside the guideline

16.4

Dernbach to White, no run, gets this just inside the guideline and White swings and misses

16.5

Dernbach to White, 1 run, length ball just outside off, front foot slapped down the ground, long-on comes in quickly and they only get a single

16.6

Dernbach to Wakely, 1 run, yorker-length outside off, Wakely runs it to point and they take on the fielder who doesn't through

Nasty figures for Dernbach, not his night...

End of over 17 (11 runs) Northamptonshire 176/2

Mahmood to bowl the last, but this is commanding total that I reckon is too many for Surrey. I think they know it too...

17.1

Azhar Mahmood to Wakely, 2 runs, full on middle, driven back past the bowler, splitting the straight deep fielders, they run hard and get two

17.2

Azhar Mahmood to Wakely, 1 run, full again, just outside off, driven with an open face on the bounce to deep cover, timed it well but couldn't find the gap

17.3

Azhar Mahmood to White, (no ball) 2 runs, wild swing off the stumps to a full ball, huge outside edge flies over point and they get back for a second

Oh dear, that was given no-ball for only having three in the ring, whoops...

17.3

Azhar Mahmood to White, 1 wide, short ball but it drifts down the leg side and is called wide, very marginal call, no actually it's fair enough

17.3

Azhar Mahmood to White, 1 run, length on middle and leg, swung down to long leg, Lewis slides and saves very well

17.4

Azhar Mahmood to Wakely, 1 run, back of a length on off stump, Wakely hangs back and pushes hard to deep cover, just a single

17.5

Azhar Mahmood to White, 2 runs, chipped from off stump on a full length through extra-cover, wide of the deep fielder so they get two and that brings up a fine century stand, great effort

17.6

Azhar Mahmood to White, SIX, slower ball on the stumps, White sees it and hammers it over square leg, great shot

That was pretty much the perfect T20 batting display, power all the way through, they kept finding the boundaries and it's going to take a mighty effort from Surrey to chase these. I just can't see it happening. But sport is played for a reason and we'll see in 10 minutes time...
