James Tomlinson is a slippery left-arm swing bowler who has grown into a solid performer for Hampshire having spent over a decade at the county. His career has been bedeviled by a succession of injuries but when fit he has reaped excellent returns and now into his 30s can be the experienced reliable operator Hampshire can build their Championship attack around.
A red-ball specialist, Tomlinson has often been conspicuous by his absence, missing the whole of the 2005 season with a back problem and playing only seven first-class matches in the next two years. But he showed what was possible when, fit and firing for a whole season, he finished the 2008 campaign with 67 first-class wickets - more than any other bowler in the country - and earned his county cap.
He only played six times in 2011 but returns of 43 and 53 wickets in the 2012 and 2013 first-class seasons suggested Tomlinson has plenty yet to offer Hampshire.

India's wretched run away from home began at Lord's in 2011. A young team full of self-belief may have brought it to an end with their victory at the same venue three years later
