Durham v MCC, Abu Dhabi, 4th day March 26, 2014

Sehwag blazes ton to see MCC home

ESPNcricinfo staff

MCC 282 (Reece 85, Harrison 5-60) and 225 for 4 (Sehwag 109) beat Durham 248 (Panesar 5-63) and 257 (Stoneman 115) by six wickets
Scorecard

Virender Sehwag's century saw MCC cruise to victory in the Champion County match in the desert and condemn Durham to a losing start to 2014.

Sehwag's hundred at better than a run-a-ball ended a 16-month wait for a first-class century; his last coming against England in Ahmedabad in November 2012.

But he rediscovered his bludgeoning best in the second-innings with 18 fours and a six to see MCC to their potentially tricky target at almost four-and-a-half runs per over.

With Sehwag dominating, MCC needed only careful support from the other end and Samit Patel provided the job with an unbeaten 48.

But that knock also came in good time, with six fours from 61 balls as the pair dispelled any notion of struggling on a fourth day wicket with a stand of 105 in just 17.4 overs.

With both MCC openers dismissed before the close on day three, the final day was nicely poised but Sehwag rolled back the months to take the game away from Durham.

The English champions' only successes with the ball on day four came via a caught and bowled dismissal from Scott Borthwick to remove Daniel Bell-Drummond and Sehwag shortly after he completed his century.

Cricket need the players like Viru Sehwag , Peterson , Afriddi, De Villiers and Gayle to entertain the crowd. After all sports is for thrilling and enjoyment. Bring back Sehwag to Indian team.

To all those who believe Viru would make a comeback, I'd say he wouldn't. I mean the BCCI would not let him do so. He's already old and BCCI is looking for players on the long run. The least that could be expected in favour of Viru is 2015 CWC. I don't see any other platform for him before or after the mega event. He needs to do well in IPL though!

    @Pathiyal, imagine Sehwag & Dhawan opening......on a continental pitch

  • Coolcapricorn on March 27, 2014, 10:46 GMT

At the age of 35+, doubt Viru suddenly is going to find a rich vein of form in consistently making some big scores & forcing his way back into the Indian team! One must remember not just his batting but his fielding too has been very poor for a long time. However having said this, it would be wonderful if the BCCI gave him the opportunity to be selected & to play in one final home ODI or an international T20 in the near future as a 'final goodbye' to him as he has really been an opening great for India! It surely will be a long time till we again see somebody like him!

  • Pathiyal on March 27, 2014, 10:17 GMT

as the guy claims, this innings give us a feeling that he has a couple of years more in him. well, wish he and gambhir will be back in the national squad soon for a last time. imagine if that happens ..... :-)

Well played Viru, am still perplexed though why Patel played this game and isn't in Bangladesh. I guess he isn't a favourite with Giles!

Viru Its been a long time haven't seen your fire.. I pray for your come back in Indian team.. I bet none can replace u in the team.. Only player who has played for team always... u got a unique passion of batting no matter wat format you play... miss u man..

  • saithesailor on March 27, 2014, 6:42 GMT

no point if he is inconsistent.....he is good on his day but that day comes seldom....A great player is always consistent and scores regularly and not in patches...

  • on March 27, 2014, 6:27 GMT

ahh... so good to hear this! runs from a player of his caliber are always good.

  • on March 27, 2014, 6:16 GMT

Viru should try and play better in IPL and than join some county team in England for more exposure, so if in 5 test series if Vijay or Dhawan fails in first 2 matches, sehwag should be included. We also need sehwag for World cup in 2015 if yuvi is unfit, if both are fir and raring to go than no one can stop Team India. #Champion of Champions#.

  • Sandt on March 27, 2014, 6:15 GMT

This will defenitly boost his confidence which was low for some time. He is match winner especially in tests and India need him at this level. Maybe he continue this form will help him to come back to the side. Also regarding people saying about he facing steyn and Johnson, please check the statistics. This guy have scored runs in SA, AUS, WI. out of his 24 centuries 5 has came in AUS,SA & WI. So he is not bad in those wickets.

  • on March 27, 2014, 5:53 GMT

viru is viru daring dangerous who can tear apart any attack on his day the selectors cannot ignore him looking at his performances in domestic cricket he has that in him which many batsmen in the world didnt have the bowlers fast or spin had a element of fear bowling to him so ill always be wanting to see him back rest i leave to the selectors

  • on March 27, 2014, 5:43 GMT

Viru waiting for you in Indian Cricket Team Squad..... Come On

  • on March 27, 2014, 5:26 GMT

Sehwag is truly one of the greats of cricket. He could have had 3 300's to his resume, however he got out at 293 when playing Sri Lanka at the Brabourne. When Duncan Fletcher practically took sehwag out of the side, India lost a great opener, and are now stuck with rohit and dhawan. It has taken time for sehwag to refind his outstanding capabilities, and hopefully he can make the impact to the Indian team he has done for many years!

  • on March 27, 2014, 4:56 GMT

@ electric_loco_WAP4. Why couldn't someone else in the team do it & who Mitch and Steyn?? The Nawab has bashed bigger and more fearsome bowlers than them.

  • on March 27, 2014, 3:41 GMT

So badly want to see this guy back in the indian team. Enough of Rohit Sharmas !

  • on March 27, 2014, 2:27 GMT

    all the best my hero

  • on March 27, 2014, 2:23 GMT

    now please retire graciously ;-)

  • electric_loco_WAP4 on March 27, 2014, 1:55 GMT

Well, the hype! Slogging a chancy 100 on a dead 4th day track v some unknown county club bowlers does'nt mean much in the larger-and real-scheme of things.Facing Mitch,Steyn swinging new ball @ 150-not to mention plenty other fine bowlers-is diff. though.

  • on March 26, 2014, 17:37 GMT

At last.........oh..after so long...but a very significant knock...at his characteristic bludgeoning best...hope this is just a beginning of many many more to come...hope this is going to be rebirth of the king of Najafgarh...who doesn't like Viru to bat afterall?

  • on March 26, 2014, 17:26 GMT

Guys without being unfair to anyone. I just want comparison between sehwag and rohit sharma. Only because one is off form out of team. And sorry but other is always out of form but never goes out of team. Even today 9 years apart who is bigger better player. Don't think you need to be a genius to answer.

  • on March 26, 2014, 17:23 GMT

There is no better sight in cricket than that of a Sehwag in form. Welcome back Virender!!
