James Tredwell has been given a break from first-team cricket with Kent so he can work on technical aspects of his game in an attempt to rekindle his first-class form.

Over the last year, firstly as Graeme Swann's workload was managed and then following his retirement, Tredwell has become England's main limited-overs spinner. He returned from the World T20 at the start of April meaning he missed much of Kent's pre-season and was left out of the squad for their second Championship match against Leicestershire, the first day of which was washed out.

In Kent's first match of the season, against Worcestershire, he chipped in with three wickets but in the second innings conceded runs at an unusually high economy rate of nearly four an over. Adam Riley, a fellow offspinner, has replaced Tredwell.

Jimmy Adams, the Kent coach, said Tredwell will benefit from some time to work on his game. "We have decided to give Treddy some time away from the spotlight of first-team cricket to concentrate on some technical modifications as he readjusts to Championship cricket after a winter of ODIs and T20s," he told the Kent website. "At the same time we are happy to have young Adam Riley who is bowling well."

At 32, Tredwell is not considered one of the main candidates to become England's Test spinner this season - he has only played one Test, against Bangladesh in Dhaka in 2010 - following the retirement of Swann even though his one-day figures are very respectable with 39 wickets at 28.00.

Last season Tredwell laboured in the Championship taking just 17 wickets at 56.76 in 11 matches and stood down from the captaincy in November, although he cited England commitments rather than form as the key reason.
