Gloucestershire captain Michael Klinger has suffered a broken arm and will miss the rest of the season.

Klinger, in the final year of a two-season deal with Gloucestershire, was struck by Derbyshire's Mark Footitt in the Royal London Cup match at Derby.

He was forced to retire hurt and was sent to hospital, powerless to help his side as they slipped away in the second innings to lose by 53 runs.

Klinger will undergo surgery before returning to Australia. He will miss Gloucestershire's final two County Championship matches and the Royal London Cup quarter-final against Kent on Friday.

He now faces a race to be fit in time for the start of the Australian domestic season. South Australia's campaign in the Matador BBQs One-Day Cup begins on October 4.

With 228 runs at 57.00, Klinger is Gloucestershire's leading runscorer in the 50-over competition but he has failed to match last season's scoring feats, which saw him make over 2000 runs across all competitions.

Gloucestershire hope to bring Klinger back for next season but a deal is yet to be finalised and they could instead look for a bowler as their overseas option.
