Charles Howard, a right-hand batsman, was in the Tonbridge XI and while there he turned out regularly for Kent 2nd XI. He then disappeared until he reappeared at Middlesex, where in 1931 he played nine games as a prfessional with modest success. Thereafter, he again vanished. In the absence of information to the contrary, the Association of Cricket Statisticians claimed that on October 19, 2008, Howard become the longest-lived first-class cricketer, overtaking Jim Hutchinson who died at the age of 103 years and 344 days in November 2000. However, research subsequently unearthed the fact he had died in London in early 1982.
