Derbyshire have signed Chesney Hughes, an 18-year-old West Indian left-hander, until 2011.
Hughes, from Anguilla, also bowls left-arm spin and holds a British passport, allowing him to play for Derbyshire without restriction. He made his Twenty20 debut in 2006, aged 16, and has also played two domestic one-day matches.
"Chesney came highly recommended by former Hampshire opening bowler Cardigan Connor," said Derbyshire's head of cricket, John Morris. "After he played some second-team cricket and trained with the first team it was clear that he possesses a great deal of ability.
"This contract with Derbyshire provides him with an excellent opportunity to further his career."
