Unicorns 231 for 8 beat Glamorgan 173 by 58 runs
Scorecard

Half-centuries by captain Keith Parsons and Josh Knappett set up a famous 58-run Clydesdale Bank 40 victory for the Unicorns over Glamorgan at Dene Park in Bournemouth.

It was the part-timers' first victory in the competition at their fourth attempt as a good all-round effort sent the Welsh county to an embarrassing defeat. The county side were bowled out for just 173 with five overs remaining in reply to the Unicorns' 231 for 8, which came after Glamorgan captain Jamie Dalrymple put them in to bat.

It leaves Glamorgan, who rested seamers James Harris and David Harrison, with just one win in the competition. Mark Cosgrove's quickfire half-century suggested Glamorgan might make light work of their run chase as they reached 72 for one after just nine overs, but the rest of their batting was abysmal.

The mainstay of the Unicorns' innings was the 126 Parsons and wicketkeeper Knappett put on in 24 overs. That was after the home side were reduced to 56 for 3 in the 10th, losing three wickets in the space of four overs after opener Jackson Thompson plundered 36 off just 23 balls with a series of pulls and drives.

But Will Owen had Thompson caught at backward square by Cosgrove in the sixth over with the score on 42. Parsons reached his 50 from 52 balls before he was dropped on 57 by Ben Wright off David Brown, while Knappett struck 65 from 78 balls.

Owen completed his five-wicket haul on debut by having Neil Hancock caught by Cosgrove at square leg, and Parsons went lbw in the penultimate over for 89. Glamorgan's early reply was dominated by Cosgrove's blistering 66 out of 79 for 3. The South Australian's half-century came up in only 25 balls and 28 minutes - 46 of his first 50 runs came in boundaries, with 10 fours and a huge six over long-on.

But Glamorgan, who had lost Jim Allenby in only the second over, saw three further wickets fall in quick succession as the Unicorns began to sniff the possibility of their first victory. It did not help the county that Cosgrove's destructive innings was ended when he was stumped off a Glen Querl wide. After that Glamorgan's run rate went down dramatically as Chris Peploe, the former Middlesex spinner, produced figures of two for 23 in his eight overs.

Glamorgan's poor batting display continued as they slipped from 121 for 4 to 128 for seven in the space of two overs. Ben Wright lobbed a catch to mid-wicket off Wes Durston, Dalrymple, Mark Wallace and Owen were all run out and Brown holed out to long-off as Glamorgan subsided to a dreadful defeat.
