Derbyshire 44 and 236 beat Gloucestershire 156 and 70 by 54 runs

Derbyshire pulled off one of the most astonishing wins in County Championship history, as they recovered from being bowled out for just 44 in their first innings to beat Gloucestershire by 54 runs. The amazing victory was set up by rookie teenager Chesney Hughes, whose unbeaten 96 in the second innings guided Derbyshire to 236 all out.

That set Gloucestershire 125 to win but some ill-disciplined batting saw them crash to 70 all out and an embarrassing defeat inside two days. Tim Groenewald was the pick of Derbyshire's bowlers, taking 4 for 22, while new-ball partner Graham Wagg claimed 3 for 31.

Gloucestershire's batsmen contributed to their own downfall, however, with New Zealander Hamish Marshall's 44 and 11 from last-man Anthony Ireland the only scores in double figure. Derbyshire took 19 points from their astonishing comeback, while Gloucestershire's three could well signal the end of their promotion hopes.

After an action-packed first day in which 24 wickets fell, Derbyshire began day two on 127 for four, with a lead of just 15 runs and Hughes unbeaten on 47. Former Gloucestershire wicketkeeper Steve Adshead was bowled for 10 by a ball from Ireland that looked to keep a bit low and it was 158 for 6 when Greg Smith was also bowled shouldering arms at Jon Lewis.

When Ireland removed Robin Peterson and Jonathan Clare with successive deliveries with the total on 175 Gloucestershire looked to be closing in on a comfortable victory. But Wagg helped Hughes add 36 for the ninth wicket before being caught behind down the leg side off James Franklin. At lunch Derbyshire were 221 for 9, leading by 109.

Steffan Jones survived a chance to Alex Gidman at first slip off Gemaal Hussain, but edged the next ball as well. This time Gidman accepted the low chance, but Jones waited while the umpires consulted, clearly believing the ball had not carried.

When the finger was raised Hughes was left high and dry four short of a deserved ton. The 19-year-old had faced 156 balls and hit 13 fours and a six. Hussain finished with 3 for 53, taking his wicket tally for the season to 64 and returning him to the top of the first class bowling list while Ireland returned 4 for 59.

Gloucestershire's batting has proved frail this season and when Will Porterfield was pinned lbw in the first over bowled by Wagg the outcome was by no mean a formality. Chris Dent quickly followed and nerves would have been jangling in the home dressing room when skipper Gidman was bowled driving loosely at Groenewald to make it 16 for 3.

James Franklin, Chris Taylor, Steve Snell and Jon Lewis all fell to shots they will want to quickly forget as Groenewald and Wagg finished 10-over opening spells with seven wickets between them.

Teenager Jack Taylor drove a return catch to Jones and all the while Marshall was batting beautifully at the other end with not a crumb of support. When he was left with no option but to throw the bat he fell to a catch behind attempting to hook Clare and it was all over soon afterwards as Ireland's stumps were scattered.

It was Derbyshire's first win since April and one of the most remarkable in their history.
