Mike Sturt was an excellent keeper, although a limited batsman, who had the misfortune to be at Middlesex at the same time as John Murray, and so his appearances were limited to the occasions when Murray was on international duty. His successful career in the City further limited his opportunities, but he answered an SOS in 1976, after a nine-year absence, when the county were hit by a keeping crisis, and showed he had lost none of his touch, playing a key part in Middlesex's first Championship title in 27 years. He went on to play an active role in both MCC and Middlesex and succeeded Mike Murray as the county's chairman in 1993.
