John Gregory, a middle-order batsman and good fielder, played three games for Middlesex in 1865 and then more regularly for Surrey in 1870 and 1871, captaining the side in the second year. In the final match of the season he ruptured an artery in his right leg and that ended his first-class career. He continued to play club cricket extensively and was reputed to have played more than almost any other man, playing up to three matches a day. In 1868 it was said he was a member of as many as 18 clubs.
