Daniel Hayward came from a prestigious cricketing family. His father, Daniel, was a Cambridgeshire stalwart, his brother Tom was for a time regarded as the best batsman in England, while his son, also Tom, was one of Surrey's pre-WW1 greats. In 1854 he turned out for Surrey, but after one match it was discovered he had not been born, as believed, in Mitcham and under the strict qualification rules of the time, he was sent packing. The bulk of his career was with Cambridgeshire where he was regarded as a decent bat and an excellent long stop.
