Ian Mitchell was a right-hand batsman who played twice for Cambridge University in 1949 and then nine times for Gloucestershire between 1950 and 1952 with almost no success - he finished with 160 runs at 8.88 in 11 matches. But despite that, he was briefly sounded out by the county as a possible captain in the dying days of an era where an amateur was the preferred choice for the role, but he turned down the offer explaining he didn't have the time. He devoted his time to club cricket and was also a good rugby player.
