Much was expected of Kenyan-born slow left-armer Ashok Patel. He played for England Youth (the forerunner of the Under-19s) between 1974 and 1976 and for Middlesex 2nd XI between 1975 and 1979. His chances were limited by the presence of Phil Edmonds and he got only two outings in 1978 and even then only bowled 12 overs. Throughout the 1980s he was a lynchpin of the Durham side in the years just before they gained first-class status.
