Sean Terry, the son of former England and Hampshire batsman Paul Terry, was born in Southampton but spent much of his early life in Perth, Australia and represented Western Australia at Under-19 level. In November 2011, he joined Hampshire on a developmental contract and the MCC Young Cricketers programme at Lord's.
Terry, a top-order batsman like his father, made his first-class debut for Hampshire in their first fixture of the 2012 season against Loughborough MCCU and made his maiden first-class fifty in this match. A Championship debut, in which he began with a duck, followed against Leicestershire. He returned to Hampshire's Championship side in September 2013 and impressed with two half-centuries. Despite limited opportunities, Hampshire offered him a contract until the end of the 2016 season.
In April 2016, Terry declared that he was moving to Dublin to pursue his ambitions to play for Ireland. He quickly made his ODI debut against Afghanistan and a T20I debut against Hong Kong, as well as briefly representing Northants in two Championship matches as the second stage of his career began in earnest.
