The first century at state level for Graeme Rummans failed to spur him towards more consistent run-scoring. A fine junior who has been unable to replicate his success at senior level, Rummans's career peaked in 2004-05 with 188 against Tasmania, but he was required for only one Pura Cup game the following season and also struggled for scores in the ING Cup. While his senior form stuttered, he was a joint winner of the Jack Ryder Medal in the Melbourne grade competition. Similar to Michael Bevan in his outlook, appearance and style at the crease, Rummans had a glittering junior career that included representation in New South Wales Under-17 and Under-19 teams; appointments as captain of the state's colts side in 1996-97 and 1997-98; and a place at the Academy in 1998. He was also a member of the Academy side that visited Zimbabwe in 1998-99, and it was on that tour that he registered his maiden first-class century. Although he was a consistently productive run scorer over a number of seasons for the St George club in Sydney grade competition, Rummans could not cement a position in the New South Wales middle order and accepted an offer to switch to Victoria ahead of the 2002-03 season. His career also suffered a setback in Sydney in early 2002 when it was revealed he had tested positive to the banned masking agent probenecid. At a hearing before an anti-doping committee, Rummans received a one-month ban from all cricket and was fined $A2000.
