When on song, Graeme Vimpani is an attractive top order batsman whose predilection to attack loose bowling can result in the generation of some free flowing driving through the off side and some cracking shots square of the wicket off the back foot. Sadly, though, he is a player who has generally struggled to cope with the rigours of first class cricket and has so far been unable to make any great impression for his State at that level. Right handed, slim in build, and of medium height, Vimpani did enjoy a productive domestic first class summer in 1996-97 and at that stage, it looked as though he may be carving a niche for himself alongside Matthew Elliott at the top of the Bushrangers' order. But he has failed to recapture the form in the years since and has subsequently watched on as interstate recruits Jason Arnberger and Matthew Mott have respectively seized the vacant opening and number three berths instead. Vimpani has retained a relatively regular spot in Victoria's one-day team but, even in that form of the game (where his hard hitting abilities seem to be more keenly valued for the moment), a sense of permanency is still an elusive commodity for him. At his best, he is certainly a very capable batsman; unfortunately, such talent has been evident at club level far more frequently than in his appearances for Victoria. It is to be hoped that the production in 1999-2000 of his most successful ever one-day season at interstate level finally acts as the catalyst for him to set the matter straight.
