Profile

Jack Bond was Lancashire's captain during a golden era in the late 1960s and early 1970s when they emerged as the premier one-day side in the land. He led them for five years from 1968 during which time they won three successive Gillette Cups and the first two Sunday League competitions in 1969 and 1970. He also guided them to two second places in the Championship. Although he led a powerful side, his positive approach won over supporters and instilled a belief in his side that they could win, and he knew how to handle players. He was a solid county batsman, forming the bedrock of Lancashire's middle order throughout the 1960s. On retiring he became Lancashire coach, but after one season he moved to Nottinghamshire as player-manager and he also captained them in 1974 as well as becoming a Test selector. He returned to Old Trafford in 1980 for another spell as manager, before becoming a first-class umpire in 1988.
