Bangladesh summon reserves as injuries bite

37

Bangladesh have called up batsman Mohammad Ashraful, allrounder Naeem Islam and wicketkeeper Saghir Hossain to their injury-hit squad in England. Their first-choice keeper Mushfiqur Rahim has been ruled out for a week after taking a blow in the face and their top-scorer in the first ODI at Trent Bridge, Raqibul Hasan, is out for the rest of the tour after fracturing his toe.

Mushfiqur was struck in the face while standing up to the left-arm spinner Faisal Hossain and had to be stretchered off the field. X-rays showed there was no fracture, but he is being kept in hospital for observation. Raqibul, meanwhile, was struck on the boot by a James Anderson yorker and run out without facing another ball for 76 after his recall to the side following "retirement" earlier in the year.

It is the loss of Mushfiqur that will be the biggest blow to Bangladesh's hopes, however. He is one of the lynchpins of their side - reliable with the gloves and combative with the bat, as he showed with two big sixes off Anderson towards the end of the Bangladesh innings. With no reserve keeper in the squad, Bangladesh face the prospect of having to use Jahurul Islam, who missed the Trent Bridge match with illness, at Bristol if Saghir doesn't arrive in time for Saturday's game.

"Ashraful left home this morning while Naeem will also fly out on the next available flight as Raqibul and Mushfiqur will not be available in the remaining two matches of the series," chief selector Rafiqul Alam told Reuters. "Saghir will join the squad as soon as possible subject to visa approval. Until he reaches England, batsman Jahurul Islam will handle the job of wicketkeeper."

Bangladesh have not won a single international match in 2010, and morale in the squad is low, a fact that Mashrafe Mortaza did not try to disguise on his return to the captaincy for the first time in 12 months. "I think we need some belief, definitely," he said. "Hopefully we will find it next game.

"It's very difficult to beat a team like England in England," he added. "They beat Australia and they are in really good form. Also, we have lost two key players in the side so it's not easy. Hopefully the boys that are are experienced will show some good batting. But the team is definitely under pressure now. We have lost 20 games in a row, and as a captain I have to lift the other 14 guys."

@ Miller, no please don't. Please don't send Greatminhaj's squad to JS. Rahim already bats at 7, and it's bad enough. Rahim needs to bat up. He is way too solid and technical to bat at 7. He is not a slugger. He shouldn't bat during the death overs. If he is playing he should bat at 4, and Jahurul Islam should bat at 5. Shakib at 6. Ashrafuzz, Riyad, or Fossial at 7. Who ever can act as a finisher should be picked out of those 3.

Ashraful should just become a finisher. Bat at 7-8. Guys like Bevan MHussey bats at 7 and acts as a finisher, and they are wayy better than Ashraful. So why can't Ashraful do the job? He doesn't belong in middle order any ways.

    No pass that onto JS

    Bangladesh squad batting lineup shuld be 1.Tamim 2.Imrul Kayes 3.Junaed 4.Mahmudullah 5.Shakib 6.Ashraful 7.Mushfiq /......

Mahmudullah's batting technique doesn't match with no 7 position. He iz a real middle order batsman and no 4 position iz much much suitable for him.No 7 position iz killing his performance.i can assure u dat he will be a star batsman at da middle like Umar Akmal doing in Pakistan team. Ashraful iz a nervous Batsman. No 6 position iz much suitable for him at da time to bring his confident and he can make da last powerplay effective at the end while bangladesh lower order making collapse. In run chase Ashrafull can make quick runs for his team to win.At no 6 position Ashraful iz da only man to Make deference for winning rather then Mahmudullah. No 4 position for Ashraful and No 6 position for Mahmudullah iz killing both of their performance.Plz do this experiment Jamie Siddons. This will make Bangladesh cricket team better much much better. All da best...

@ Alok Kapali fans: It's funny how you guys want another 'Ashraful' (under-performer, underachiever, flucky player) to replace Ashraful. Get over that India 100 and ICL 100 against gully bowlers. That was 3 years ago. What has he done since? What has he does recently that makes him better than Ashraful? What has he done to be in the team? Nothing. Go check his domestic stuff. He is unfit, he is fat, and he is not scoring. He denied to play for BD A team when he was picked, TWICE. What does he think he is too good to be in A team?? He has to prove himself in A team, and THEN get picked in natioanls. These type of attitude should be allowed to enter in National team.

Both Ashraful and Alok does not deserve to be in team. I wont pick either of them. But if I had to HAD to pick one I would pick Ashrafool, because he is not a lazy ass jackass like Kapali, who looks for easy money

They is a clear bias in the selection and the selector's have lost their focus. Mithun Ali, Roni Talukder, Shamsur Rahman, Mominul Haque, Anamul Haque....there are of course, the old warhorses Nazimuddin, Alok Kapali, Shariar Nafees and Aftab. Only then his heart will grow fonder for the ambition and aspiration for batting for his country and not have a carte blanche like the present selection committee dole him out quite so often. And yes, it's time to change the selectors. At least Rafiqul alam should take the hike. We the taxpayers don't pay our precious money for such a committee that does not foresee the development and planning of cricket in our country.

For all those who want to see Kapali in the side: Alok Kapali is currently unfit. I think it was high time Saghir Hossain or Dhiman Ghosh got a chance in the side. Although it's unfortunate to have lose Mushy for the rest of the series, but it's good move from BCB to give other keepers an opportunity to perform. Remember: Our cricketers only learn cricket and get real professional exposure at the national level; infrastructure and accessibility to gyms & training sessions are low class at domestic levels.

  • JS82 on July 9, 2010, 15:04 GMT

@ShababFAlam - Sure in a perfect dream world Bangladesh will have the likes of Tait, Nannes, and Johnson to form a fierce pace trio. In reality Bangladeshi fast bowlers are ordinary and lack the firepower to penetrate a batting line up. Therefore, you will continue to see a 2 fast bowler and 2 or more spinners in the bowling attack. Until they fix the pitches and have a good fast bowling academy, we will never eradicate this problem.

  • Sam_k14 on July 9, 2010, 14:08 GMT

Nothing is going to change. This is a below ordinary side. They have always been below par and should never have been awarded test status. The BEST they can do to fans and themselves is to go home now. We can see English players going back to county cricket and we as fans will get to see better matches. BD doesnt even rank to play club cricket in anywhere in the world. Waste of space really

  • h313 on July 9, 2010, 13:59 GMT

was there any need for the drama of ashraful's omition and bringing back?this is rediculas.BD's cricket will not improve untill there are some people in the board with commonsense.

  • on July 9, 2010, 13:57 GMT

No, not Ashraful again plzzzz, I was one of his biggest fan, and I still like him...but he is completely out of sorts, Bangladesh will be more handicapped with his presence as he will have to play for his place and prove a point. Kapali should get his chance...Dear Bangladesh team , you have lots of potential but the problem is you that and you will lose your senses trying go hung, keep your heads down and apply yourself, you can achieve a lot...

  • on July 9, 2010, 13:21 GMT

Alok Kapali, Aftab Ahmed needed for Bangladesh... Ashraful has been a waste of talent for Bangladesh, in spite of getting many opportunities....

  • swat1999 on July 9, 2010, 13:12 GMT

Seems Bangladeshi cricketrs are very tired & low moral, i was surprised that since Tamim struck LBW at 1st ODI rest of the batsmans never looks that they may make a good score or able to win the match!! One stage looks like they playing for the survival not for wining the match. BCCB needs to think about that. Replace won't be work if attitude not changed. If continue like that Bangladesh will be count as same stage as Zimbabwe or Kenya....

  • ataur1980 on July 9, 2010, 13:09 GMT

Definitely Kapali should be picked. Why Ashraful? Ashraful has failed again and again and again and again. How many times he has to prove that he can not perform. What he has done for last 6 months or year? He rarely performs. I don't believe that Bangladesh does not have any other option than Ashraful.

  • Nawsad on July 9, 2010, 13:02 GMT

@ShababFAlam,thanks for ur comment.i dont know why ashraful again n again.any young players can certainly do better than him.itz better to play 10men team without ashraful.he shud be shamefull himself to play again.any ways.only an injury wud keep him outside the team.lolz

  • SABD on July 9, 2010, 12:44 GMT

Other than a specialist wicketkeeper-batsman, Bangladesh doesn't need any replacement at this moment. Given Bangladesh's recent bowling performances, it can be easily said that they need another specialist bowler to win matches, as this will balance the team composition. There is no need for a back-up batsman. They should play 3 seamers and one spinner(specialists), considering the conditions.

Ashraful was never a 'necessity' to the Bangladesh side. There is a good no. of promising youngsters waiting to make an impact at the intn'l level. I'm unable to understand the reason behind the bias of the selectors for Ashraful. This move (to bring him back) has yet again sent a wrong signal to players: 'Play just 5-6 good knocks in a decade, and your place is guaranteed!'.

  • on July 9, 2010, 12:25 GMT

wish allah will recover Mushfiqur & Raqibul....they r the real tigers..

  • on July 9, 2010, 11:36 GMT

Why Ashraful????????/// Its too much. I think selectors should think and consider the team without Ashraful. He is just like Prepaid mobile card.Recharge in one match and use it in next 10 matches.

  • hrshawon on July 9, 2010, 11:17 GMT

  • demon_bowler on July 9, 2010, 10:41 GMT

This is very bad luck for Bangladesh, and I hope their injured players recover quickly. But it is very silly to travel without a reserve wicket-keeper.

  • on July 9, 2010, 10:14 GMT

Unlucky Mushy. One of those things if you're a keeper. Invest in an Aero mask like Karthik and McGlashan...

Jahurul doesn't look that great a keeper, let a couple of regulation leg side balls run off for byes. You're a lot better having someone who is a specialist keeper rather than a keen fielder who can bat. That way you won't drop a batsman and gift him 40 / 50 runs or more. Look at the England situation in the past few years to see picking the best batting wicket keeper doesn't pay off (Geraint Jones anyone?)
