Born in Queensland, Peter Steindl moved to Scotland with his Scottish wife in 1993. He was part of Scotland's World Cup squad in 1999 (one of two Scottish-Australians, the other being Iain Philip), though he didn't make the final XI in any of their matches. A bustling medium-pacer, he represented Scotland in 10 one-dayers, without ever cementing his place, but found his niche in development and coaching. After working at an Edinburgh Council "Sporting Chance" programme he joined Cricket Scotland as its youth development manager in 2006, replacing Andy Tennant. In the following year, the pair again worked together as Scotland's unofficial coaches, when Peter Drinnen resigned as their coach in July. Steindl was formally appointed Drinnen's successor at the end of 2007.
