England v India

England won by 319 runs

Overs 1-50  | Overs 51-100

0.2

8.2

Kumar to Strauss, FOUR, well, a great start is ruined by the next delivery, which is a gentle leg-stump half volley. Slapped away with disdain by Strauss

England 40/2   P Kumar 7-1-11-0

Kumar to Pietersen, no run, swinging away outside off, left alone

17.2

Kumar to Pietersen, FOUR, clipped firmly to midwicket, Praveen slipping towards leg stump and Pietersen leaning into a well-timed shot

17.3

Kumar to Pietersen, no run, this has got to be close! Pietersen strides forward and is hit on the pad ... that looked really adjacent, but Marais Erasmus says no. Well, Pietersen was a long way down the pitch but that was mighty close. Praveen looks hard done by, and you do feel for him, that was a great delivery

17.4

Kumar to Pietersen, no run, a slow outswinger, outside off, and it's left alone

17.5

Kumar to Pietersen, no run, fuller this time, tapped defensively to cover

17.6

Kumar to Pietersen, no run, and another leave to end the over

England 48/2   P Kumar 8-1-15-0

19.2

Kumar to Pietersen, no run, straighter, Pietersen drives back to the bowler

19.3

Kumar to Pietersen, FOUR, well, it's four runs for the batsman but this wasn't an entirely convincing stroke. Pietersen leaned across to off and had a drive, the ball going through gully and down to third man for four

19.5

Kumar to Pietersen, no run, another outswinger, another leave

34.1

Kumar to Strauss, no run, and bowls a full wide tempting delivery, Strauss has a go at him, drives it to cover

34.6

Kumar to Strauss, no run, this is better, starts middle and leg, moving towards off, Strauss comes forward and pushes it to mid-off

England 81/3   P Kumar 12-4-20-0

36.1

Kumar to Strauss, OUT, Kumar strikes, Strauss's long vigil ends. Is this an elaborate set-up? After bowling wide and wide last over, he bowls this sucker ball around off, making Strauss drive, which moves away and takes the edge through to third slip. Most likely it isn't a set-up, we just happen to read too much into things at time

AJ Strauss c Raina b Kumar 32 (166m 98b 4x4 0x6) SR: 32.65

36.2

Kumar to Morgan, no run, a good first ball. Morgan would have sat watching Kumar bowl inswingers, moving away from Strauss, but first up he gets the outswinger first up, and has to bring the bat down fast

36.3

Kumar to Morgan, no run, now the inswinger, too good for Morgan, pitches leg, moves away to beats the hanging bat outside leg

36.4

Kumar to Morgan, OUT, England are falling fast here. Morgan collects a duck. This is superb bowling. From close to the umpire he bowls, the ball pitches just inside the line, catches Morgan on the crease, and according to Rauf wouldn't have moved away enough to miss the stumps. Morgan confirms with the umpire if he is leg-before or caught bat-pad. The umpire says lbw. And off he goes. Hawkeye confirms Rauf's call, for what it is worth. Hitting the top of off, it says

EJG Morgan lbw b Kumar 0 (3m 3b 0x4 0x6) SR: 0.00

36.5

Kumar to Prior, no run, accurate outswinger first up, pitches middle and off, moving away, squares Prior up. he defends

36.6

Kumar to Prior, no run, and now the inswinger... Kumar is doing everything here, but this is swinging too far down the leg side

England 85/5   P Kumar 13-5-20-2

38.2

Kumar to Bell, no run, starts to swing away after pitching outside off, left alone

Kumar to Bell, no run, this one doesn't swing after shaping to do so, Bell gets inside half of the bat to it

42.2

Kumar to Bell, no run, back of a length, around off, Bell is right behind it

42.3

Kumar to Bell, no run, Dravid is not in great form in the slips! About the sixth or seventh he has dropped in the last year and a half. This is very well bowled, around off, straightening, just holding its line, takes Bell's edge, low to Dravid's right, who has it in his finger tips as he dives, and when the elbows hit the ground, the ball pops out. Kumar is not thrilled

42.4

Kumar to Bell, no run, solidly defended now

42.5

Kumar to Bell, no run, full, outside off, left alone

42.6

44.4

Kumar to Bell, no run, another outswinger, just outside off, Bell is well forward and right behind it

44.5

Kumar to Bell, no run, Kumar must be wondering what he needs to do to get a wicket here. this one pitched just ouside off, moved in, and then - in the air, mind you - left Bell. Only thing it didn't do was take the edge

44.6

Kumar to Bell, FOUR, tries the big inswinger now, and gets a touch too straight. Bell flicks it fine of long leg. It is important to take every run-scoring opportunity here

England 108/6   P Kumar 17-7-27-2

57.1

Kumar to Swann, no run, full and swinging away from wide of off stump, Swann lets it go.

57.2

Kumar to Swann, 1 run, the 50-stand is up in no time! Full on off stump, Swann leans into a guide through the covers. What a stirring fightback!

57.3

Kumar to Broad, no run, shortens the length on off stump and it holds its line, Braod works it back down the track.

57.4

Kumar to Broad, FOUR, another exquisite shot from Broad! PK gets this one to snake away subtly from short of a length, and it made room for Broad to cut as it went away. He latched onto it with a fierce little cut and the ball scoots through backward point.

57.5

Kumar to Broad, 2 runs, in the air, but safe again! Braod splices a swipe off a length ball and the mishit keeps Mukund at mid-on interested as he runs back and leaps ... but the ball evades his outstretched hand.

57.6

Kumar to Broad, 1 run, short of a length to end the over and nipping away, Broad coaxes it into the covers for a single as England continue to motor towards 200.

England 181/8   P Kumar 18-7-35-2

59.1

Kumar to Swann, no run, this one nips in from short of a length, Swann manages to defend it into the off side.

59.2

Kumar to Swann, 1 run, well played Swann, another big inswinger from PK, he gets his front pad across and works it around the pad to the leg side for a single.

59.3

Kumar to Broad, 1 run, back of a length and moving away in the air, Broad is behind the line nicely and plays it into the covers for a single.

59.4

Kumar to Swann, 2 runs, Boy, India are coming apart in spectacular fashion here! Poor anticipation from Abhinav at wide mid-on, Swann tries to drive a full ball uppishly and scoops it in the air. Abhinav was late to move and tumble forward and it landed in front of him. And then a horror throw to give away the overthrow too.

59.5

Kumar to Swann, no run, short of a length, good line from PK, Swann fends from the crease.

59.6

Kumar to Swann, no run, he drops a length ball into the off side, Broad wants the single, but Swann sends him back.

England 191/8   P Kumar 19-7-39-2

61.1

Kumar to Swann, 1 run, full outside off and swinging away, Swann laces it into the covers for one more.

61.2

Kumar to Broad, no run, the banana swinger still exists, it curves in like a boomerang from well outside leg and finishes on off. Broad does well to defend.

61.3

Kumar to Broad, no run, back of a lenght, Broad looks to pull without room, and misses.

61.4

Kumar to Broad, 1 run, full and angling across, this time Broad drives it through mid-off for a single.

61.5

Kumar to Swann, no run, he ducks this one into Swann who has leaned well outside off, and then stabs it away as it comes in.

61.6

Kumar to Swann, OUT, whoa, the stand has ended, Praveen has produced a magic ball to send Swann packing. The crowd breaks out into warm applause as he goes off, what a stupendous effort from Swanny! Praveen gets one to snort from just short of a length, I wonder how often he has managed to produce something like that with his 125 kph fare. This pitch is full of tricks, I tell you. Swann was leaning forward as it took off and was caught unawares. It kept coming at him as he tried to pull back and evade it, hit the handle and popped up for an easy catch at gully, even as he turned all the way around in shock. India appeal, Swann walks. Praveen has a wicket, but he continues to scowl. What a character!

GP Swann c Mukund b Kumar 28 (49m 35b 3x4 0x6) SR: 80.00

England 197/9   P Kumar 20-7-41-3

63.1

Kumar to Anderson, no run, another snake from the fingers of PK. Zips all the way across a befuddled Anderson, who though capable of producing similarly potent magic, is clueless with a bat in hand.

63.2

Kumar to Anderson, no run, fuller this time, Anderson manages to get behind it and play it down the track.

63.3

Kumar to Anderson, no run, there he goes, gets Anderson fishing for trout in the Thames. Full and swinging away, Anderson feels for it in hope and misses.

63.4

Kumar to Anderson, no run, stunning ball, better batsmen would have edged this as it jarred away from a length. Anderson missed it by two-bats' width.

63.5

Kumar to Anderson, no run, shorter length, on middle and leg, Anderson pokes it off the outer half of the bat into the off side.

63.6

Kumar to Anderson, no run, Jimmy survives! Stays on the crease and steers a full delivery into the gully area. Broad will look to inflict some more damage now.

England 199/9   P Kumar 21-8-41-3

65.1

Kumar to Broad, no run, short and outside off, Broad looks for another cut and misses.

65.2

Kumar to Broad, no run, short of a length from PK, he's the one man who's maintained his sanity through the carnage. Length ball on off, shaping away, Broad defends.

65.3

Kumar to Broad, no run, another short of a length ball on the off stump, Broad plays it into the off side.

65.4

Kumar to Broad, no run, back of a length this time, on middle and leg, Broad is handling him carefully here.

65.5

Kumar to Broad, no run, again that huge away movement, Broad covers the line and eases it into the covers.

65.6

Kumar to Broad, FOUR, respect for the bowler for the first 5 balls of the over, and he finishes off with a maul. An absolute maul. Length ball, hinting at the threat of away swing. Broad isn't scared, he just pumps it back over the bowler's head. What a spirited 50 this has been!
