India tour of England, Only T20I: England v India at Manchester, Aug 31, 2011
England won by 6 wickets (with 3 balls remaining)
31 August 2011 - night match (20-over match)

Bresnan to Parthiv. Here we go ...

A crackling crowd has come in to watch this game, plenty of support for India by the looks of it. Slightly murky skies, but we hope the weather remains good through the course of the game. I am Nitin Sundar to take you through the first half, and it will be over to my colleagues in London for the chase.

Matt: "Can anyone explain why Stokes has been left out in favour of a batsman whose international T20 strike rate is under a run a ball? I don't care if Bopara can bowl, he's there as a batsman and he's slower than Trott! Otherwise, great to see Hales and Buttler in the team." Bopara may bat slower than Trott, but he bowls faster than RP Singh. Good enough for me!

Tim wonders if this is this the first time two Somerset wicket-keepers have played for England in the same game. Buttler and Kieswetter are the culprits, but that's one for Steven Lynch to answer.

Ramki: "Ajinkya Rahane might be forgiven for thinking he is Sourav Ganguly today for making his debut alongside Rahul Dravid." Good one, that!

So Rahane, who has the highest first-class average in Indian domestic cricket history, makes his India debut in the T20 side. Despite the fact that he struggled to make the XI for his IPL side. On the other hand, Suresh Raina who needs a dictionary to decipher a bouncer, played all four Tests. India's selection moves continue to confound.

"It will be interesting to see who hands the cap to Rahul Dravid on his T20I debut," says Ranganath. May be the T20 veteran Suresh Raina? 90 T20 games including 20 for India.

Ashis is impressed by India's pace reserves today. "Ashwin seems to be India's fastest bowler today," he says.

"No live chat this time?," asks Udyat. I don't have the heart to break the bad news to him ...

Meanwhile Gnasher lets us know that KP is handing out the new caps to Hales and Buttler. It is normally done by an ex-player. Hmmm ...

Toss: MS Dhoni wins and chooses to bat. Rahane is making his debut alongside Dravid. Dhoni expects the pitch to slow down as the game goes on. "Dravid is an exciting cricketer. He will enjoy the game today, no pressure and he can go and enjoy himself." Parthiv Patel, Munaf Patel and Vinay Kumar are in the side too, and R Ashwin is the only specialist spinner. The Indian line-up looks like it is carrying at least two batsmen more than they might need, but given how they have batted so far on this tour, you never know ...

Stuart Broad confirms that Hales and Buttler will make their debuts, while Stokes and Finn will sit out. Samit Patel is back in the mix too, though I really wonder how much fitter he is now than he was when they dropped him for being flabby. Jade Dernbach also gets his chance today.

Meanwhile, one wonders if Dravid's T20I career will go the way Garry Sobers' ODI career went ...

Wasim Akram says this is a "very very different wicket" - it looks white, has a new variety of mud and reminds Wasim of Sharjah - India won't mind that diagnosis at all. He predicts some skid for the seamers early on, but spin later on.

The whites have given way to two shades of blue - dark and darker. Hello and welcome to the start of the limited-overs leg of India's tour of England. We are minutes away from the toss for the only T20 at Old Trafford.

Plenty of stuff up on our site to bring you up to speed if you have been away since the Tests - here's the match preview for starters. India's injury woes haven't ended - Gautam Gambhir has FINALLY been declared unfit, and Ravindra Jadeja has been called up as a replacement. No, I didn't make that up. Jadeja won't be playing today, but Rahul Dravid will start and end his international Twenty20 career. Nagraj Gollapudi was watching at the net session yesterday, as Dravid observed Tendulkar one one side, and Raina and Rohit Sharma on the other practising their strokes. It is a new start for England too, as they gear up for their World T20 defence next year in Sri Lanka.

Bresnan to PA Patel, 1 wide, slides the first ball down the leg side and India are away with a wide.

Bresnan to PA Patel, FOUR, he's a punchy player who loves to go after anything off-line. Just like that. Short and wide outside off, the pitch is really slow and the ball sits up for Parthiv to slam away to the left of cover for four.

Two slips in place. Test series hang-over for England?

Bresnan to PA Patel, no run, better line, gets one to jump up from back of a length at Parthiv who prods at it from the crease.

Bresnan to PA Patel, no run, fractionally wide of off stump, Parthiv slashes with mighty fierceness, but misses.

Over to Rahane, the Ranji run-machine ... Big things expected of this man in the coming years.

Bresnan to Rahane, 1 leg bye, this one nips into Rahane from back of a length, and it dribbles off the pad to the off side. Parthiv is alert to the single and India pinch a leg-bye. Young blood in the legs!

Rahane and Parthiv are sporting jumpers. It does look blustery. Dernbach has the ball.

Dernbach to Rahane, no run, ooh, Parthiv had to hurry back after running halfway down. Rahane forced it off the back foot to point, but it went straight to the fielder who had a shy and missed.

Dernbach to Rahane, FOUR, not a bad way to get your first runs for India! Rahane stands up, opens the wrists and hoists a back of length ball majestically over cover-point,. Solid wrist work there.

Dernbach to Rahane, 1 run, short of a length outside off, Rahane drops it into the covers for a single.

Dernbach to PA Patel, 1 run, 138 kph, but Parthiv seemed to have all the time he needed to work that off the pads round the corner to deep square leg.

Dernbach to Rahane, 1 run, they get there eventually. Rahane steers softly to the left of point, Parthiv was always coming and Rahane eventually responded by the time Morgan tumbled, collected and threw.

Dernbach to PA Patel, no run, smart little offcutter at 112 kph, Parthiv spots it, but the timing is a little awry as he whips straight to mid-on

Prabhat: "Andrew Strauss, Eoin Morgan, Stuart Broad and Alistair Cook, 4 captains for England in a space of a fortnight..... This takes some beating" And they say England are the settled side in this series!

Bresnan to Rahane, no run, whoa, that's not how Rahane got that first-class average in the mid 60s. Short of a length outside off and not there for the drive, but he just looks to dropkick it on the up over long-off. Doesn't succeed, he misses it by some distance.

Bresnan to Rahane, FOUR, hooka! An Indian batsman who plays the hook. Short ball going down the leg side, Rahane goes up and over, almost all the way over fine leg. A touch of top edge in that, but he picked up the gap well.

Bresnan to Rahane, 1 run, and the single straight away. Again he eases a back of length ball into the covers for one.

Bresnan to PA Patel, FOUR, 138 kph, short and quick, Parthiv was really late on that but went for the pull nevertheless, with a vengeance. It took a healthy top edge and flew over slip's head.

Bresnan to PA Patel, no run, Parthiv gets behind the line this time and steers into the covers.

Bresnan to PA Patel, no run, Parthiv charges out of the blocks and goes for a reckless swipe through the leg side! Bresnan beats him for pace outside off.

The captain comes on.

Broad to Rahane, 2 runs, over-pitched on the pads, Rahane flicks without a fuss through midwicket for two.

Broad to Rahane, FOUR, take that! Broad tries a bit of old-school enforcing. Short and aimed at the head, but it was going down the leg side. Rahane pounces on it with another very good-looking pull. It lands just short of the fence at deep backward square leg.

Broad to Rahane, no run, Rahane escapes a run out chance now. He tried to nudge a short of length ball into the leg side and steal a single, but the ball went no where and Broad was on to it immediately on his follow through. Rahane was caught a few yards out of the crease as Broad sprawled ahead and shied under-hand. And he misses!

Broad to Rahane, FOUR, Broad needs a reworking of the lines here. Another one on the pads, and Rahane is putting on display a flick that has class written all over it. This could be one of the defining strokes in Indian cricket in the coming years.

Broad to Rahane, 1 run, back of a length on off stump, Rahane once again shows good awareness, tapping into the off side for a single.

Broad to PA Patel, no run, Parthiv moves around rampantly on the crease, but cramps himself for room as Broad keeps it tight on middle and leg.

Dernbach to Rahane, FOUR, The Indians have arrived. Four Tests late, but finally they might just be here. Rahane sets himself up, eyes a short ball from Dernbach and slams it mighty over midwicket.

Dernbach to Rahane, no run, a gem of a slower ball that, came out of the back of the hand, floated for an eternity in the air and landed full on middle and off. Rahane barely spotted it and played it to the leg side.

Dernbach to Rahane, 1 run, another slower one, Rahane picks it this time and works it to the leg side for one.

Dernbach to PA Patel, OUT, mistimed and gone. Parthiv holes out to another slower ball. It was landed on a length, and deviated away from Parthiv who looked to swipe it across through the straight field. It takes the top egde, spirals up into the air and comes down safely into mid-on's hands.

PA Patel c Broad b Dernbach 10 (19m 12b 2x4 0x6) SR: 83.33

Here comes the other debutant. They say he can bat. Has well over 10,000 runs in each of the two other formats, so they might be right.

Dernbach to Dravid, no run, short of a length outside off, Dravid taps into the off side from the crease.

Dernbach to Dravid, 1 run, whoa, Dravid gets his first T20 runs in ungainly fashion as Dernbach gets one to jump up viciously from a length. He gloves it away from the slip for a single.

Broad to Dravid, no run, Dravid tries to swing one away to the leg side, but it is through him.

Broad to Dravid, 1 run, he's played four Tests, all beautiful shots, and in five T20 balls, he's produced three ugly shots already. He looks to hoick into the leg side again, and inner edges it to short fine leg.

Broad to Rahane, no run, 145.6 kph, short and fast, but Rahane still goes for the pull. He mistimes it though, and it goes to mid-on. Good over this for England, so far.

Broad to Rahane, FOUR, this time he latches on. He's going after these fastish short balls and getting away with them. Pulled away high and easy over square leg.

Broad to Rahane, FOUR, Ok, not a good over for England any more! Rahane is taking them on here. He marches out of the crease this time and scythes Broad on the up over the covers.

Swann to Dravid, 1 run, turns into Dravid from outside off and he guides the cut into the deep for one more.

Broad to Rahane, no run, slower ball at 119.9 kph, Rahane treats it with respect, driving it back solidly to the bowler.

Broad to Rahane, OUT, one debutant goes, and the other follows. Rahane's little fairytale is over. It wasn't really short, as Rahane backed away to the leg side and looked to create room to boom it over the covers. He was still cramped and ended up upper cutting it into third man's hands. Well played young man!

Broad to Kohli, OUT, India going through a mini-collapse here, Kohli is gone. Short and wide outside off, perhaps too wide outside off for the pull and he ends up nicking it through to the keeper. It hit really low down the bat too.

Swann to Sharma, OUT, boy, did Rohit look lazy there? He dawdles past an offbreak that goes through the bat pad gap, Kieswetter is dozing away as well and doesn't collect it, but he has enough time to make amends as Rohit turns back slowly. Broad to Raina, SIX, what's that? I can't play the bouncer? Take that. You can almost hear Raina muttering those words as he launches a short ball from Broad miles over the deep square leg boundary. Stunning timing on that.

Broad to Raina, no run, short of a length outside off, Raina taps it into the off side.

Dernbach comes back for some fun. Round the stumps.

Dernbach to Raina, 4 leg byes, what a poor ball. Angled down the leg side, Raina looks to pull and gets some pad on it and it runs away to fine leg. David Lloyd reckons India will win this easy, given the nature of the track.

Dernbach to Raina, 1 leg bye, speared into the pads, Raina misses one of those swings to the leg side and they get a leg bye to the leg side.

Dernbach to Dhoni, FOUR, brutal. Dhoni lines up a length ball angling into him and bottom-hands the life out of it. It nearly sails all the way over midwicket despite never taking off.

Dernbach to Dhoni, OUT, what an entertaining ball that was to watch! Dhoni is gone, and in dramatic style. He looked to bash this down the ground, got too violent for his own liking and lost the top hand grip on the bat and ended up slicing it one-handed high towards long-on. The debutant Hales was there, he nearly fluffed it as he tried to take it with the fingers pointing up, it popped up and landed on his shoulder, allowing him to grab it before it landed. He eventually exHales in relief.

Dernbach to Ashwin, FOUR, and he's away with four. Fast and short outside off, Ashwin just waits for it to pass him and angles it along to third man.

Dernbach to Ashwin, OUT, Ashwin came, Ashwin went. He dabbed a length ball into the off side, loped out of the crease pointlessly and took for ever to turn back. Dernbach ran through to under-arm the ball onto the stumps.

"The Kumar at No. 42 is in," says Bumble! PK walks out.

Bresnan to Raina, OUT, Another mini-collapse for India. Raina is gone now, and they are eight down. He's played a superb hand though. It was a back of length ball angling across Raina, who tried to launch it over the leg side, but ended up slicing it off the outside edge into the covers.

Whodathunk India can't last 20 overs? Vinay Kumar is the new man in. Two wickets in hand. One of them, Munaf, is a walking wicket.

Bresnan to Kumar, no run, menacing bouncer that, PK is pushed back into the crease and jabs it to the leg side.

Bresnan to Kumar, 1 run, attempted yorker, ends a full toss as PK backs away exposing his castle. He just about manages to get bat on it and squeeze a single to third man.

Bresnan to Vinay Kumar, no run, bouncer to Vinay, who gets nicely behind it and defends. This is what India needed in the Tests.

Bresnan to Vinay Kumar, no run, behind the line again to a short of length ball, and defends it into the off side. India playing for stumps? Not a bad idea, really. They need to play out these 20 overs.

Bresnan to Vinay Kumar, 1 run, VK gets the single now, stays on the crease and nudges to the leg side. Six balls to go. Can they take it to 170?

Dernbach to Vinay Kumar, 1 run, short of a length to VK, who forces a single down to long on. Over to Praveen Kamikaze Kumar.

Dernbach to Kumar, no run, swing and a miss. That was back of a length well outside off, PK swings hard but he is too far away from the ball as he has backed away, and misses.

Dernbach to Kumar, OUT, classy deception! What a pleasing slower ball that was! It was bowled, it spent some time traversing the 22 yards, time in which Praveen set himself up for a straight drive, played it, missed, and thought about attempting another shot. Too late, the ball came through and tapped off stump. Easy peasy.

Munaf Patel has spent the whole tour watching from outside. Finally he gets a chance.

Dernbach to MM Patel, OUT, and Munaf doesn't try to make the most of the chance. India are bowled out in this format too. Short and wide outside off, he swings at it without much intent and nicks through to the keeper.

The tale of three Rs for India, in what was really a complete madcap innings. Rahane, Rahul and Raina have taken them to 165, which might prove enough, but they will have to bowl some really smart stuff. We'll be back for the chase in a moment, and it will be my London colleagues to take you through it.
