NatWest Series [India in England] - 3rd ODI

England v India

England won by 3 wickets (with 7 balls remaining) (D/L method)

We've five minutes away from the start. Parthiv Patel and Ajinkya Rahane will open the innings for India. They've batted with a certain chutzpah in this series. James Anderson to bowl from over the wicket.

Ramesh Srivats on Twitter. "It's been a pretty decent tour for India. We beat three teams - Sussex, Kent & Leicestershire. And lost to only one - England."

Here's what Andrew Miller has to say about England's change, the dropping of Samit Patel, the retaining of Ravi Bopara. "An expected move, although Ravi must consider himself a bit lucky. He surely can't have many more chances to prove his point."

12.45 pm: "Jadeja reminds me a bit of some of the "all rounders" England picked in the 1990's. As Martin Johnson put it: "English all rounder; can't bat, can't bowl, can't field," says James. Actually, fielding is something Jadeja's rather good at. Regarding the other two disciplines, we'll let today's performance do the talking.

Ravi: "Just don't understand the criticism that Jadeja cops from people. He has a decent average of 32 coming lower down, and has picked up 29 wickets in 35 matches..nearly a wicket every match. He is no Shane Watson, or Daniel Vettori, but the archetypal bits-and-pieces cricketer, whom we can do with in the days of such specialists like RP Singh and Vinay Kumar."

Sanjay Manjrekar had said that India should blood their younger players even at the risk of losing. Well they haven't done that to the extent they could have.

Toss, 12.30 pm India's bowling has been poor in this ODI series, so will they look to take the pressure off the bowlers and chase?

England are not playing Samit Patel, Jonathan Trott returns to the side. This was expected.

MS Dhoni calls heads, it's a tail. England will bowl, says Alastair Cook. "It's quite hard to defend here later in the game."

Dhoni said India wouldn't have minded chasing. "For the balance of the side we've got Ravindra Jadeja (spinning allrounder) for Manoj Tiwary, and RP Singh for Vinay Kumar," says Dhoni. So no game yet for Varun Aaron.

Scathing criticism from Hanson: "I cant understand why people still call Ravindra Jadeja an allrounder.... Now that he is in the side, It means that India are playing with 10 players and England are playing with 12."

Suku: "Its going to be difficult for India to defend unless they put on atleast 280 on the board. India lacks genuine pace bowling and Varun should have been given a chance instead of Munaf..."

12.20 pm The weather is fair in London, says Nagraj Gollapudi. There are grey clouds over The Oval but they are passing. The light is bright and we should get a full day's cricket, touch wood.

Ravi Shastri on Star Cricket says the pitch will have good bounce and carry, Wasim Akram reckons 220-230 will be a good score.

12.05 pm Hello and welcome to ESPNcricinfo's ball-by-ball coverage of the third ODI between England and India at The Oval. England lead the five-match series 1-0. Another victory today will mean India cannot win the series of course.

Sahil Dutta's previewed today's game. He says "it's a pity [Varun] Aaron can't get a game." Given how India's attack has performed so far, I agree. Give Aaron a go, let him loose. Let's see if his pace has direction too.

Dernbach - what odds on four slower balls in the over?

45.1

Dernbach to Ashwin, FOUR, the first one isn't a slower ball, it's a fast one down leg side and Ashwin gets some bat on it, sending it racing to the fine-leg boundary

45.2

Dernbach to Ashwin, no run, this one is quick as well, Ashwin defends on the off side

45.3

Dernbach to Ashwin, FOUR, what a shot that is! Short ball just outside off stump, Ashwin deliberately chips it over the wicketkeeper for four. Dernbach's lost it a bit, the slower ones were working superbly

45.4

Dernbach to Ashwin, 3 runs, short of a length outside off, Ashwin drives off the back foot through cover

45.5

Dernbach to Jadeja, FOUR, that's a slower ball, but it's on leg stump and Jadeja's ready and waiting, he swings it high towards deep backward square for a one-bounce four

45.6

Dernbach to Jadeja, FOUR, that's a faster one, full outside off, Jadeja makes room and blasts it through the off side to make it 19 off the over

End of over 46 (19 runs) India 193/6
RA Jadeja    63* (80b 8x4)      JW Dernbach    9-1-47-0
R Ashwin    13* (6b 2x4)      TT Bresnan    9-2-23-1

End of over 47 (9 runs) India 202/6
RA Jadeja    64* (82b 8x4)      TT Bresnan    10-2-32-1
R Ashwin    21* (10b 3x4)      JW Dernbach    9-1-47-0

John: "I think England have fallen in love with the idea of Dernbach rather than the reality. He went for 49 in 5 overs at Southampton while Anderson bowled 3 overs for 11, and here one of Anderson or Broad isn't going to bowl out while Dernbach goes for 19 in an over. He bowls a good slower ball but he's not accurate enough to be a top class bowler."

Anderson replaces Dernbach. So he will finish.

47.1

Anderson to Ashwin, 1 run, Ashwin backs away towards leg, Anderson follows him with a length ball, Ashwin swats through square

47.2

Anderson to Jadeja, FOUR, full ball around off stump, Jadeja stays in his crease and blasts it flat and over the head of the fielder at mid-off

47.3

Anderson to Jadeja, FOUR, and again! The fielder at mid-off is a bit wide and Jadeja hits through Anderson's full line to the long-off boundary

Bopara goes to long-off.

47.4

Anderson to Jadeja, 2 runs, the slower ball and Jadeja cuts from his stumps to short third man, the throw from Bresnan at the bowler's end concedes an overthrow

47.5

Anderson to Jadeja, 1 run, Jadeja flays the full ball back at Anderson, who sticks his shoe out and deflects the ball towards mid-off

47.6

Anderson to Ashwin, FOUR, It's Ashwin this time, makes room by moving towards leg and lofts a length ball down the ground. India have scored 51 for 1 off the batting Powerplay. Bizarre turn of events.

End of over 48 (16 runs) India 218/6
R Ashwin    26* (12b 4x4)      JM Anderson    9-1-48-3
RA Jadeja    75* (86b 10x4)      TT Bresnan    10-2-32-1

Broad will bowl the penultimate over. Trishul: "@ John, England try to use Anderson the same way India would like to use PK. They are amazing with the new ball but tend to get taken for runs with the old ball. Hence Anderson even with amazing figures usually does nto bowl the death overs."

48.1

Broad to Jadeja, 1 run, Jadeja lofts a fuller ball towards long-on

48.2

Broad to Ashwin, 2 runs, a full toss and Ashwin smashes it towards wide long-on, where Anderson does the fielding

There's a hold-up in play as Ashwin wants a new bat.

48.3

Broad to Ashwin, FOUR, Ashwin has certainly worked on his batting, he used to be a bit of a mug. He moves across his stumps and scoops a low full toss over the head of the man at short fine leg

48.4

Broad to Ashwin, no run, in the blockhole outside off stump, Ashwin gets beaten

48.5

Broad to Ashwin, 1 run, full and wide outside off, Ashwin reaches for it and cuts to third man

48.6

Broad to Jadeja, 2 runs, a full toss but Jadeja mis-times the hit towards long-on, Jadeja goes back for the second and makes his ground before the stumps are broken by Kieswetter

End of over 49 (10 runs) India 228/6
RA Jadeja    78* (88b 10x4)      SCJ Broad    9-1-47-1
R Ashwin    33* (16b 5x4)      JM Anderson    9-1-48-3

49.1

Dernbach to Ashwin, 1 run, a slower ball and Ashwin manages to swat it past the bowler. That's one out of four?

So Anderson won't finish.

49.2

Dernbach to Jadeja, OUT, that's the second slower ball and Jadeja gets under it and sends it into orbit. He's hit it miles in the air down the ground but not far enough. Bell settles under the ball a few feet inside the boundary at long-on

RA Jadeja c Bell b Dernbach 78 (132m 89b 10x4 0x6) SR: 87.64

Jadeja's played a career-reviving innings here.

49.3

Dernbach to Ashwin, 1 run, Ashwin's standing on off stump, exposing middle and leg, to create hitting space on the leg side. He swats it between midwicket and mid-on

49.4

Dernbach to Kumar, no run, blockhole delivery and Praveen can only play it back to the bowler, Ashwin's out of his ground but Dernbach doesn't throw

49.5

Dernbach to Kumar, 2 wides, that slower ball is too wide outside off stump, Praveen swings and misses, Ashwin runs a bye to the keeper, Kieswetter hits at the striker's end but Ashwin is safe

49.5

Dernbach to Ashwin, 1 run, Ashwin tries to scoop again but can't get it past short fine leg this time

49.6

Dernbach to Kumar, 1 run, full ball on off and middle, Praveen stays in his crease and drives through cover

4.45 pm: India, after floundering at 58 for 5 after 19 overs, have managed to get 234. Will it be enough? I don't think so, because they simply haven't got the bowlers to create the sort of pressure Anderson and co. did. I've been proved wrong far too many times, though. Liam and Sahil will bring you the chase.

End of over 50 (6 runs) India 234/7
P Kumar    1* (2b)      JW Dernbach    10-1-53-1
R Ashwin    36* (19b 5x4)      SCJ Broad    9-1-47-1
