India tour of England, 4th ODI: England v India at Lord's, Sep 11, 2011
Match tied (D/L method)
Played at Lord's, London
11 September 2011 (50-over match)

Thanks Abhishek. Yep, Zimbabwe are struggling just a little bit. Brendan Taylor will have to play a good knock to make up for his brain-freeze at the toss. Anyway, back to Lord's, where England have taken the field. A smiling Steven Finn looks very happy to be out there. James Anderson will open the bowling.

10.10 am Moments from the start. I am handing over commentary duties till the first drinks break to Liam Brickhill, so that he can take a break from fretting over Zimbabwe's fortunes against Pakistan.

Nikhil: "I just dont understand why did they brought aaron in squad when they had no intention of playing him. Whats the harm in trying him? its not like he will bowl more worse than RP and munaf had done this series."

sameer: "I really dont understand all this hype and excitement about Aaron. All he has done is bowled a few deliveries above 150 K. Is that enought to be so excited. whats his first class record like? how many top batsmen has be accounted for? what variety does he have? can be bowl an accurate yorker consistently?" How will you find all that out unless you give him a chance?

Sasi Kanth: "The English beat India in yet another aspect.. Tactical aspect.. picking Finn was a masterpiece..he would surely be raring to go out and prove himself..Also Dernbach's slower ball lost its surprise factor...If Finn does well it would force Dernbach to work even harder and if and when Dernbach is picked in the side..he would come out all guns blazing..I seriously hoped India picked Aaron.. A new bowler...fresh and confident from the emerging players.."

Denzil: "I am surprised at the 'Aaron'-mania. Pace isn't always good. Still in doubt, consult Shaun Tait and Shoaib Akhtar." And when confronted by a green top, play Munaf Patel? If you say so

Ujwal: "Varun Aaron must bounce out someone in the nets...knock em off ...preferably Dhoni...only then he might get a game."

Arvind: "very much predictable series so far, Toss Eng, India Bat, Rain, and Eng chasing successfully."

Shahab: "Home conditions... Then why there are lot of hues and cries when sub-continent countries prepare dust-bowl conditions ? That means only pacers are considered as bowlers?" Questions, uncomfortable questions

abhishek agarwal: "disappointing is not even the word, why is varun aaron there if you are not going to give the guy a chance....we dont have pace ..that has proved our this entire series...yet we fail to give the guy achance who has genuine pace...ridiculous."

Hamid: "Varun Aaron not in side yet again? .... Why?" Beats me, if he cannot get a game on this pitch, I wonder when he will

Karn: "I feel if there are more than 15 overs left at the end, Jadeja must be sent before Raina. Jadeja gives his best with the bat if he has overs in hand; he's a grafter: takes singles, rotates the strike, finds the odd boundary or two. However, it would be unfair to expect a 20-ball 35 from him. Raina, on the other hand, does a great job if he has the license to hit. He's the ideal player to have in the last 10-12 overs; not great when you need someone to build a platform." In short, he has no business to be batting at No. 5, especially in difficult conditions. Mighty fine point, I say.

So another test coming up for the India batsmen. That pitch looks seriously green, it is an early start and England have four fast bowlers waiting.

9.45 am England have won the toss again and will have a bowl

Alastair Cook: "Steven Finn comes in and Jade Dernbach misses out. Certainly for home games you want to use conditions to your advantage."

MS Dhoni: "We were looking to bowl first as well. Fresh wicket would have had something more for the seamers. With five bowlers you can put pressure and don't have to worry about the part-timers." Aaron continues to miss out, Munaf and RP keep their places, on a green pitch

When asked about his fitness for the game, Dhoni said that it was "fortunately only sports-related injuries and not fitness-related injuries."

Have a look at Sid Monga's preview while we wait for the toss. He wonders whether Munaf Patel or RP Singh will make way for Varun Aaron

Green grass on the pitch. The new ball will seam, it will swing, the toss will be crucial, says Wasim Akram. Team winning the toss would want to field, adds Ravi Shastri just to remove any remaining doubts.

Ten minutes to go for the toss even as the ground is bathed in sunlight

9.35 am Welcome to a rain-free Sunday morning at Lord's for India's last appearance in England on this tour. The caravan moves to Cardiff in Wales for the final ODI. England need one more win to wrap up another series.

Anderson to PA Patel, no run, he finds good shape back in towards Parthiv straight away, the diminutive left-hander getting back and across to defend his first ball

Anderson to PA Patel, 2 runs, confident start! Just the one sighter for Parthiv, who rocks back and pulls the second delivery in the air to deep midwicket ... It's chased all the way to the boundary, and Ben Stokes does really well to claw it back just before the rope

Anderson to PA Patel, 1 leg bye, a better length from Anderson, but as the ball curls from off to leg the line is a little off and they pick up a single off the bat/pad to fine leg

Anderson to Rahane, 1 wide, this one doesn't swing, and then line takes it down past leg stump. Wide called

Anderson to Rahane, no run, Anderson teases Rahane outside off with an outswinger but, mindful of his dismissal in the last match, Rahane lets it go

Anderson to Rahane, 1 wide, Anderson is a little off here, again he hurls one down leg as the ball doesn't swing. Is the slope messing with his rhythm?

Anderson to Rahane, no run, the mixed bag continues, as he follows that up with another good outswinger outside off. Rahane almost has a fiddle at it, but opts to leave

Anderson to Rahane, 1 run, tucked off the hip, the ball rolling behind square, and Rahane is off the mark

End of over 1 (6 runs) India 6/0

    • AM Rahane 1 (3b)
    • PA Patel 2 (3b)
    • JM Anderson 1-0-5-0

Steven Finn will share the new ball on his home ground. He appeared to have bowled himself into some really good rhythm with Middlesex before he was called into England's squad. He's not bowled in a match for a while, but his domestic form will give him some confidence.

Finn to Rahane, no run, a decent start, the ball rising quite sharply off a length. Rahane raises his arms high to leave

Finn to Rahane, no run, great line, great length. Finn sends the ball in on the angle, Rahane plays the line and is beaten as it hits the seam and leaves him

Finn to Rahane, no run, an uncharacteristically tentative defensive poke from Rahane, the ball taking the inner half of the bat and rolling back down the track

Finn to Rahane, no run, good wheels from Finn as he aims one full and straight. Dug out just wide of mid on

Finn to Rahane, 1 run, Rahane looks to drive on the up, and ends up slicing it down to third man. Finn has his hands in the air as the ball doesn't go to hand

Finn to PA Patel, no run, slanted across the left-hander, who steps across to cover his off stump and leaves alone

Solid first over from Finn. They're laying some sawdust down in the bowlers' footholes already though, which is a little worrying.

End of over 2 (1 run) India 7/0

    • PA Patel 2 (4b)
    • AM Rahane 2 (8b)
    • ST Finn 1-0-1-0
    • JM Anderson 1-0-5-0

Anderson's line was a little off in his first over, he'll look to right it now. Still two slips in place, as Finn had.

Anderson to Rahane, no run, beaten by the outswinger! Anderson draws Rahane forward and curls the ball past his outside edge

Anderson to Rahane, no run, this one hits the seam and holds its line, Rahane defending to leg

Anderson to Rahane, no run, perhaps just a little short of a good length, Rahane staying deep in his crease

Anderson to Rahane, no run, Anderson targets the pads, Rahane nudging to square leg

Anderson to Rahane, no run, a little fuller, outside off, defended

Anderson to Rahane, no run, Anderson ends a good second over with another length delivery that is turned to square leg. A maiden

End of over 3 (maiden) India 7/0

    • AM Rahane 2 (14b)
    • PA Patel 2 (4b)
    • JM Anderson 2-1-5-0
    • ST Finn 1-0-1-0

Finn to PA Patel, no run, past the outside edge! Bounce and carry from Finn, and Parthiv plays and misses outside off, stepping half forward

Finn to PA Patel, 1 wide, pushed down the leg side, Parthiv shuffling across to let it pass

Finn to PA Patel, no run, probing delivery on middle and off, the ball taking the inside edge of a hurried defensive push

Finn to PA Patel, no run, good pace from Finn, but the line is wide enough outside off for Parthiv to safely leave alone

Finn to PA Patel, no run, the bowler straightens up and Parthiv nurdles to straight midwicket

Finn to PA Patel, no run, this is quality new ball bowling from Finn, who is working up a good head of steam and generally maintaining a strict line. Parthiv guides this one to gully, playing a little away from the body

Finn to PA Patel, no run, and a tight finish to the over, Finn giving Parthiv nothing to work with as the final delivery is defended back down the track

End of over 4 (1 run) India 8/0

    • PA Patel 2 (10b)
    • AM Rahane 2 (14b)
    • ST Finn 2-0-2-0
    • JM Anderson 2-1-5-0

Anderson to continue. Those two slips remain in place.

Anderson to Rahane, no run, snaking gently away through the air as Rahane gets onto the front foot to defend

Anderson to Rahane, no run, forced, on the up, to cover

Anderson to Rahane, no run, Rahane looks for the drop-and-run single to cover point, but the fielder is in too quickly

"A criminal waste of a powerplay!" spits Premkumar. "Won't the Indians ever learn from their mistakes?" To be fair, England have kept things tight with this new ball. The last thing India need is an early wicket.

Anderson to Rahane, no run, pitched right up outside off, Rahane hanging is bat out to limply drive back to the bowler

Anderson to Rahane, no run, Rahane presses well forward, the ball hitting the seam and coming in to him as the ball is squirted defensively to leg

Anderson to Rahane, 1 run, clipped just wide of midwicket, and they charge through for one

End of over 5 (1 run) India 9/0

    • AM Rahane 3 (20b)
    • PA Patel 2 (10b)
    • JM Anderson 3-1-6-0
    • ST Finn 2-0-2-0

Finn to Rahane, no run, Finn thunders to the crease and hurls down a low full toss just outside off, Rahane - perhaps taken a little by surprise - can only tap it to mid-off

Finn to Rahane, 2 runs, leading edge! Finn's pace, bounce and movement got the better of Rahane as he looked to turn the ball into the leg side. Fortunately for the batsman, the ball looped safely up and over gully

Finn to Rahane, no run, aggressive from Rahane! But the execution is lacking, as he charges out at the bowler and flails wildly towards leg, the ball fizzing past the outside edge

Finn to Rahane, 1 run, another big shot from Rahane as Finn pitches up on middle and leg, the ball flying down to fine leg

Finn to PA Patel, 1 run, good running as Parthiv drops the ball in close and they set off immediately

Finn to Rahane, 1 run, Finn is looking really threatening here, as now he finds the outside edge of a forward press, the ball flying through a vacant fourth slip and down to third man

End of over 6 (5 runs) India 14/0

    • AM Rahane 7 (25b)
    • PA Patel 3 (11b)
    • ST Finn 3-0-7-0
    • JM Anderson 3-1-6-0

Well, you might say this is a little defensive from Cook. He's taken one of the slips out already.

Anderson to Rahane, no run, Anderson hits a good length, Rahane defends

Anderson to Rahane, 1 leg bye, nicely bowled again from Anderson, this one jagging in to the right-hander to strike him on the pad. Parthiv senses the chance for a quick single off the pad, and calls straight away

Anderson to PA Patel, SIX, shot! Parthiv plays the pick-up pull really well, lifting this off a length and in front of square on the leg side. The ball lands just over the boundary marker, so that's six

Anderson to PA Patel, no run, good response from Anderson! This one bursts off the seam past Parthiv's outside edge

Anderson to PA Patel, FOUR, top-edged! But it rockets up and over Kieswetter and bounces down to the boundary. He was looking for that pick-up shot again, but the length wasn't quite there this time. India are looking to push on after a quiet start

Anderson to PA Patel, no run, great lines once more from Anderson. Parthiv isn't quite sure whether to come forward or back, and is beaten swishing outside off

End of over 7 (11 runs) India 25/0

    • PA Patel 13 (15b 1x4 1x6)
    • AM Rahane 7 (27b)
    • JM Anderson 4-1-16-0
    • ST Finn 3-0-7-0

Finn to Rahane, no run, Rahane's quiet start continues, as this is nudged into the leg side

Finn to Rahane, no run, Rahane is starting to look a little fidgety out there, he's searching for a calming boundary. This is pulled off the front foot, the ball going straight to mid-on

Finn to Rahane, FOUR, edged! Neither slip nor keeper go for it as the ball flies right between them. Well, Finn is in the midst of a penetrative spell but he's not getting his just rewards

Finn to Rahane, no run, Finn hurls this down with vim and vigour on a good length, the ball hitting the seam and spitting in towards Rahane's midriff

Finn to Rahane, no run, beaten outside off! Finn is really making a statement with this spell, beating Rahane's outside edge

Finn to Rahane, FOUR, nothing wrong with the ball, but that's a fantastic shot from Rahane, who seizes on the hint of width and punches powerfully through cover point

End of over 8 (8 runs) India 33/0

    • AM Rahane 15 (33b 2x4)
    • PA Patel 13 (15b 1x4 1x6)
    • ST Finn 4-0-15-0
    • JM Anderson 4-1-16-0

Anderson to PA Patel, no run, Anderson pitches up, searching for swing, and Parthiv drives to mid-on

Anderson to PA Patel, no run, flashing outside off! This was shorter and a little wider from Anderson. Parthiv attempted to make the most of it, but couldn't find the connection

Anderson to PA Patel, 1 run, driven just wide of mid-off, and there's just enough time for a scampered single

Anderson to Rahane, 2 runs, clipped off the toes through square leg, and they push hard for the second. Hmm, perhaps a little too hard, as Parthiv is stepping a little gingerly after tumbling over at the non-striker's end. He seems to be ok.

Anderson to Rahane, no run, Anderson continues to keep Rahane quiet, as the ball is tapped to a fielder

Anderson to Rahane, no run, full and quite wide, inviting the drive. Rahane lays into it, coming forward, but picks out the cover fielder with precision

End of over 9 (3 runs) India 36/0

    • AM Rahane 17 (36b 2x4)
    • PA Patel 14 (18b 1x4 1x6)
    • JM Anderson 5-1-19-0
    • ST Finn 4-0-15-0

The impressive Finn continues. He has a quick chat with Cook and Broad as Rahane calls for a new bat, and has a quick slurp from an energy drink. Umpire Illingworth gives him a bit of a ticking off for that, urging them to hurry up.

Finn to PA Patel, no run, a yorker is speared down just outside off at good pace, Parthiv opening the face on the bat as he digs it out

Finn to PA Patel, 1 run, leading edge again! Finn is finding really disconcerting bounce off a great length. Parthiv was looking to turn this one to midwicket but it went in the opposite direction and - fortunately for him - dropped short of the point fielder

Finn to Rahane, no run, a splice-jarring delivery is fended into the leg side, Rahane taking the bottom hand off the bat as he looks to protect his ribs

Finn to Rahane, no run, Wild. Rahane is looking rattled out there. Another Finn lifter bursts past the outside edge as Rahane aims an almighty heave to leg, and Finn jogs down the wicket to let Rahane know exactly what he thinks of the stroke

Finn to Rahane, 1 run, fuller and straighter from Finn, Rahane gives himself a little room and tries to manufacture a drive, the ball taking the inside half of the bat and rolling into space on the leg side

Finn to PA Patel, no run, great finish from Finn. He's bowling with superb rhythm, the left-hand/right-hand combination doing nothing to upset him. This one really zings off the good length, beating the outside edge of Parthiv's forward poke

End of over 10 (2 runs) India 38/0

    • PA Patel 15 (21b 1x4 1x6)
    • AM Rahane 18 (39b 2x4)
    • ST Finn 5-0-17-0
    • JM Anderson 5-1-19-0

And now Samit Patel, England's 12th man, is on the field delivering a drink. This is a senseless delay. Even the umpires are standing there having a chat. Finally we're set to continue, England having taken the Bowling Powerplay as Tim Bresnan is brought into the attack.

Bresnan to Rahane, no run, decent start from him. Perhaps a touch short of a good length, but it cramps Rahane for room as he defends to leg

Bresnan to Rahane, FOUR, flicked with balance and poise! Rahane has finally found the middle of the bat, and tellingly it's with a shot that he didn't try to over-hit at all. He just leaned over this leg-stump half volley, turning his wrists on the ball to send the ball racing to square leg

Bresnan to Rahane, no run, Bresnan tightens his line and is defended

Bresnan to Rahane, no run, full, the line outside off stump, and Rahane comes forward to push to cover

Bresnan to Rahane, 1 run, yet another leading edge! Rahane had set himself to crack this into the leg side, but the ball seamed and bounced away from him, looping over the vacant slip area and bouncing down to third man

Bresnan to PA Patel, no run, Parthiv looks to be aggressive, walking down at Bresnan, but the bowler re-adjusts well and there's no run to be had

End of over 11 (5 runs) India 43/0

    • PA Patel 15 (22b 1x4 1x6)
    • AM Rahane 23 (44b 3x4)
    • TT Bresnan 1-0-5-0
    • ST Finn 5-0-17-0

Finn's spell continues. And why not, he's been superb so far.

Finn to Rahane, no run, seam, bounce and pace are too much for Rahane as the ball fizzes past a defensive push and strikes him on the body

Finn to Rahane, no run, once again Finn finds sharp movement back in off the pitch, the ball stinging Rahane on the left thigh

Finn to Rahane, SIX, a top edged scoop flies for six! Rahane didn't look in control of this at all. He was trying to pull the ball up and over square leg, but seemed to have got more height than distance in the shot. Nevertheless, it carries all the way!

Finn to Rahane, FOUR, well, we've praised Rahane for the purity of his strokeplay in this series, but he's playing some agricultural shots at the moment. This is fetched off the stumps and creamed through sqaure leg, the bat swinging right across the line

Finn to Rahane, FOUR, and another! Rahane charges Finn and heaves, the ball taking the edge and flying over the slip to third man. India's supporters don't mind that at all, and happily cheer the runs

Finn to Rahane, no run, again Rahane jumps out, but this is short from Finn and rises up and over his attempted uppercut. Finn extends his follow through down the wicket, giving Rahane a right earful

End of over 12 (14 runs) India 57/0

    • AM Rahane 37 (50b 5x4 1x6)
    • PA Patel 15 (22b 1x4 1x6)
    • ST Finn 6-0-31-0
    • TT Bresnan 1-0-5-0

Bresnan to PA Patel, 1 run, Parthiv has been fairly anonymous after his fluent start, tapping this quietly off his legs for a single

Bresnan to Rahane, 1 run, Bresnan hits a length outside off, Rahane opening the face to guide the ball to third man

Bresnan to PA Patel, no run, Bresnan has quickly settled into a rhythm, zoning in on off stump to keep Parthiv quiet

Bresnan to PA Patel, FOUR, slapped! Parthiv won't be kept quiet for long, stepping down the wicket and seizing on a short delivery, an explosive pull arcing away in front of square. Great shot

Bresnan to PA Patel, 1 run, flashed behind square on the off side as Bresnan offers width, third man sprinting round to cut it off

"Are the speed guns measuring Finn alright?" asks Amit. "Regularly in high 140s and nw even 150?" One is never quite sure how much to trust the speed guns, but he is bowling with great pace and rhythm, that much is clear. Finn has definitely added a yard or two over the summer.

Bresnan to Rahane, no run, full and straight to end the over, Rahane digging it out to cover

End of over 13 (7 runs) India 64/0

    • AM Rahane 38 (52b 5x4 1x6)
    • PA Patel 21 (26b 2x4 1x6)
    • TT Bresnan 2-0-12-0
    • ST Finn 6-0-31-0

Second change for England, Stuart Broad coming into the attack. He has an extended conference with his captain before beginning. It appears Parthiv is still struggling after slipping in the field. No sign of a runner yet though.

Broad to PA Patel, no run, Broad is full to start, Parthiv's flat-footed drive going to mid-off

Broad to PA Patel, 1 run, guided down to third man, an easy single taken

Broad to Rahane, OUT, gone! Broad strikes in his first over. He aimed for a surprise yorker, and Rahane played over the top of what turned out to be a low, dipping full toss. Broad appeals, the umpire's finger quickly goes up. Strangely, Rahane never really looked comfortable in this innings.

AM Rahane lbw b Broad 38 (60m 53b 5x4 1x6) SR: 71.69

Broad to Dravid, no run, Dravid is tested first ball as yet again Broad is very full and straight, but he does enough to dig it out to mid-on

And in fact, Rahane has stayed on the field as Parthiv's runner.

Broad to Dravid, no run, on a length outside off, Dravid stepping across and leaving alone

Broad to Dravid, no run, left alone outside off once more

End of over 14 (1 run) India 65/1

    • R Dravid 0 (3b)

    • SCJ Broad 1-0-1-1

Bresnan to PA Patel, FOUR, chipped in the air, but wide of a leaping midwicket fielder and he connected well enough to pick up a boundary

Bresnan to PA Patel, 1 run, Parthiv is up on one leg to whip a pull out into the deep. He seems to be moving alright at the crease

Bresnan to Dravid, no run, Dravid comes well forward with bat and pad together in defence

Bresnan to Dravid, no run, good length from Bresnan again, Dravid is forward to defend once more

Bresnan to Dravid, no run, just a little width offered outside off, but Dravid is new to the crease and looks to guide the ball through gully. No run on offer

Bresnan to Dravid, no run, the veteran batsman comes nicely forward again, defending with the straightest of bats and a high left elbow

"I thought runners were recently outlawed by the recent ICC meeting." The new rules about runners and the like only coming into effect from October 1, Rohit Ramesh.

End of over 15 (5 runs) India 70/1

    • TT Bresnan 3-0-17-0
    • SCJ Broad 1-0-1-1

Broad to PA Patel, no run, full of length from Broad, Parthiv defending off middle

Broad to PA Patel, OUT, Broad strikes again! Parthiv had profited from the pull shot in this innings, but it has now led to his dismissal. This wasn't quite short enough for the shot, but he went through with it, looking to mow the ball in the air over midwicket. Bopara got himself underneath the swirling chance, tumbling to the ground as he took the chance

PA Patel c Bopara b Broad 27 (69m 32b 3x4 1x6) SR: 84.37

And I'll take the chance now to hand commentary over to Abhishek Purohit.

Thanks Liam. England sending both openers back after what you can say was a part-solid, part-fortuitous start. Here's Virat

Broad to Kohli, no run, very full outside off to start with, left alone

Thanks Abhishek. No boundaries for India since the 21st over, England doing really well to strangle the scoring in these middle overs. And after the break, it'll be Steven Finn into the attack. He was exemplary with the new ball.

Finn to Dhoni, no run, the loosener is hurled down outside off, Dhoni stepping across to leave alone

Finn to Dhoni, 2 runs, Dhoni pushes one past backward point, on the walk, and they push hard for the second

Finn to Dhoni, FOUR, edged! No slip in place, Kieswetter leaps to his left but he can't even get a glove to it. Still no luck for Finn, who is still finding movement off the surface with this older ball. Dhoni was late coming forward to this full delivery, and the edge would've landed in first slip's lap

Finn to Dhoni, no run, this went like a legcutter from Finn, seaming sharply away off a short-ish length to zip past Dhoni's outside edge

Finally, after that, a slip is brought in.

Finn to Dhoni, 1 run, a touch straighter from Finn, and Dhoni is able to work him into the leg side for one

Finn to Dhoni, no run, nicely full once more, this one a little wider of off as Dhoni gets forward and across to drive softly to extra cover

Finn to Dhoni, 1 run, Dhoni spots the chance for a quick single as the ball takes the inside half of a defensive bat and rolls just wide of midwicket. Quick calling, fast running. But still no boundaries

Finn to Raina, 2 runs, rising off a length, Raina gets across to off and clips off the hip to long leg. The placement is good, and they rush back for the second

Finn to Raina, no run, Raina angles the ball towards gully with a hop

Finn to Raina, FOUR, hoicked out to deep midwicket! Raina held nothing back as he flung himself into the stroke, but didn't get the greatest connection. Still, he did enough to find the boundary despite Trott's diving effort, and break the shackles somewhat

Finn to Raina, FOUR, shot! Again there's not much culture in the stroke, Raina clearing the left leg and slicing the drive through cover, but this one was out of the middle and threaded the the off side field

Finn to Raina, no run, well, this wasn't too far away from the leg stump. Raina got right across to off stump and tried to glance it fine, but the ball just bounced on him and went over leg stump.

Broad to Raina, 1 run, close! Tapped to mid-off, they set off for a quick single but Anderson swoops and shies. The throw goes just wide of the stumps as Raina dives to make his ground

"I think Dhoni is planning to keep the wicket in hand until 40th over. Then will aim to make 100 odd runs in the last 10 overs.. possible?" Why not Biju.

Broad to Dhoni, no run, on a length and straight. Dhoni stands at the crease and taps it back down the track

Broad to Dhoni, no run, again Dhoni waits in his crease, this time working the ball into the leg side

Broad to Raina, 1 run, Raina swings across the line at a full one, but the connection isn't great so it's just the one run

Broad to Dhoni, 1 run, great fielding from Cook at mid-off! Broad was full once again and Dhoni drilled a drive down the ground, but Cook sprinted across and dived to get a palm to it

Broad to Raina, FOUR, deft touch! Raina has tried this shot a few times in this innings without success, but now he's got bat on an uppercut and collects four runs back over Kieswetter's head

Quick change of gloves for Raina, and a sip of water. Meanwhile Mahesh writes: "Muir as in Muir Woods in San Francisco? You can see its beauty in Planet of the Apes! Much of the movie was shot there..." Anderson back into the attack.

Anderson to Raina, no run, good start, on a length and straight as Raina tucks to leg

"Where is the Suresh Raina who made a 100 on debut with those classy cover drives and empathic slog sweeps?" asks Kartik Agarwal. "All that is left of him is ugly slashes." This hasn't been the most cultured of knocks, but it's the runs that count.

Anderson to Raina, 1 run, slower ball from Anderson, but it's picked and worked into space for one

Anderson to Dhoni, 1 run, another slower one - much slower - and Dhoni cracks the looping full toss out to deep cover.

That was the slowe legcutter from Anderson. Not that it matters, as it didn't even pitch

Anderson to Raina, 1 run, Anderson quickens up, Raina drives to long off

Anderson to Dhoni, 1 run, tapped to cover, and the call for a single is immediate

Bresnan to Raina, 1 run, that's better from Bresnan, but Raina still finds enough space on the off side for a quick single

Bresnan to Dhoni, 1 run, bunted down to long off with minimum fuss, Bresnan still keeping the ball full

Bresnan to Raina, no run, there's the change-up, this one is dug in short and takes Raina a little by surprise, the ball getting big on him as he tries to pull

Anderson to Dhoni, FOUR, a huge hit flies miles in the air ... but has he got the distance on it? There are men out at deep midwicket and long-on, but the ball bounces right between them and bounces over the rope for four!

Anderson to Dhoni, FOUR, four more! Short and wide outside off, Dhoni finds the gap with a scything cut and there's no-one out on the off side boundary to stop that

Anderson to Dhoni, 1 run, Anderson finds a straighter line and bowls this one a little shorter, Dhoni hopping back and dinking to cover for a frantic single

Anderson to Raina, SIX, that is massive! Right in the slot for Raina, Anderson dishing up a friendly leg stump half volley. Still, it had to be hit and Raina sent it sailing into the third tier of the stands with a powerful pick-up off the legs

Anderson to Raina, 1 leg bye, Raina attempts to repeat the shot but can't pull it off a second time, but they scamper through for a quick leg bye

Anderson to Dhoni, 1 wide, Anderson's frailty at the death is being exposed here, as he sprints in and then hurls the ball down the leg side to be called wide. He looks just a little rattled

Anderson to Dhoni, 1 run, a tip-and-run single to cover ends the over

18 runs from that over. Just what the doctor ordered, you might say.

End of over 44 (18 runs) India 210/4

Bresnan to Dhoni, no run, Dhoni perhaps just tried to hit this full one a little too hard, the ball taking the inside edge and ricocheting off his pad

Bresnan to Dhoni, no run, another very full delivery outside off from Bresnan, practically the yorker, and Dhoni digs it out to mid-off

Bresnan to Dhoni, 1 run, a low, dipping full toss is swiped out into the leg side

Bresnan to Raina, 1 run, Bresnan is zoning in on a really good length here, as another yorker is dug out back to the bowler ... but he parries the ball away in his follow through, allowing a single

Bresnan to Dhoni, FOUR, timing! There was nothing wrong with the delivery really, but Dhoni picked the perfect spot to hit it, sending the ball to deep midwicket with plenty of wrist

Bresnan to Dhoni, no run, good end to the over for the bowler, who zings down a yorker wide of off. It's close, but not called wide

End of over 45 (6 runs) India 216/4

    • MS Dhoni 46 (56b 4x4 1x6)

Broad to Raina, FOUR, Raina loses his shape completely as he throws everything into the shot, but is rewarded with runs as the drive is chipped up and over mid-off

Broad to Raina, no run, a yorker outside off slips under the bat as Raina attempts to angle it to third man

Broad to Raina, SIX, huge! Broad hurled down a slower offcutter on a very hittable length, and Raina absolutely creamed it into the second tier of the stands beyond midwicket

Broad to Raina, no run, that's a much better length from Broad, and Raina digs the yorker out to cover

Broad to Raina, 1 run, ah, this could have been another boundary! An attempted yorker slipped out as a friendly full toss outside leg, but Raina found the fine leg fielder with a paddle behind his legs

Broad to Dhoni, 2 runs, chipped, inside out, over wide long-off, but the ball plugs in the outfield. Dhoni wanted a third run there, Raina didn't, and the junior batsman is getting a reprimand

End of over 46 (13 runs) India 229/4

    • MS Dhoni 48 (57b 4x4 1x6)

Bresnan to Raina, FOUR, Raina is giving it a great thwack here, again he finds the boundary with a powerful heave into the leg side. There are two men out in the deep, but he put it right between them

Bresnan to Raina, 1 run, again Raina targets the leg side, but this time it's straight to the fielder

Bresnan to Dhoni, 1 wide, arrowed down well wide of off, and that's clearly wide

Bresnan to Dhoni, FOUR, Dhoni joins Raina in reaching fifty! He got there by intentionally slicing a full toss up and over backward point, there's no fielder out there and the ball rolls over the rope

Bresnan to Dhoni, 1 run, much better yorker from Bresnan. but there's still a single to be had as Dhoni digs it out into the leg side

Bresnan to Raina, 2 runs, Bresnan attempts to sucker Raina with the slower-ball bouncer, but the batsman spots it and pulls in the air down to long leg

Bresnan to Raina, 1 run, punched to deep mid-off for one to end the powerplay - 58 runs from it

Ryan: "When England come to India, and face a full strength batting line-up and lose their advantage of a swinging white ball up front, I shudder to think what this Indian team will do to them, their ODI bowling still lacks bite when it becomes docile." It's one of the areas England have never really mastered.

Graeme Swann is back into the attack for a final spell.

Swann to Raina, 1 run, Raina immediately reacts with aggression, skipping down the track and driving to long-on

Swann will switch to round the wicket to Dhoni.

Swann to Dhoni, no run, an almighty swipe to leg is missed, the arm ball thudding into Kieswetter's gloves

Swann to Dhoni, SIX, this time he connects! The ball flies over deep midwicket, the forearms adding real power to the stroke

Swann to Dhoni, FOUR, another mow from Dhoni, and more runs, the ball dispatched to wide long-on

Swann to Dhoni, 2 runs, helicopter shot! It's well connected, but he finds the fielder in the deep

This is now the highest fifth-wicket partnership for India against England in ODIs.

Swann to Dhoni, 1 run, again Dhoni targets the leg side, but can pick up only a single as his pull meets a fielder

Well, Cook has turned to Anderson, who hasn't had the happiest time bowling at the death today. Or ever really. There's an extended conference as the field is decided upon.

Anderson to Dhoni, 2 runs, Dhoni tried to smear the covers off the ball with this shot, scything through the line at a full one, his left leg raised. Just the single however, the ball going to long-off

Anderson to Dhoni, 1 run, full again from Anderson, a slower one and Dhoni angles his bat to get the ball through gully

Anderson to Raina, 1 run, Raina follows suit, jabbing down on a yorker outside off to pick up a single to third man

Anderson to Dhoni, 1 run, Anderson continues what has been a surprisingly steady over by sending down a pinpoint yorker, just the one run as Dhoni digs it out

Anderson to Raina, FOUR, Anderson comes round the wicket to change the angle, but then offers Raina a high full toss outside off that is gleefully slapped over backward point for four

Anderson to Raina, FOUR, shot! Raina keeps his right elbow high as he drives in the air and down the ground. Bresnan charges round from long-off and does well to get to it, but then palms the ball over the boundary. Jimmy is fuming.

Mazahir offers a counterpoint: "@Ryan, India was playing with its full batting strength in Tests, and it was lack of planning and we have to accept that England played better cricket in this all series. So this is not the point to say that when "England come on India.... and so and so....."

End of over 49 (13 runs) India 270/4

Broad to Dhoni, SIX, home run! That's out of here. Broad flung down a full toss and Dhoni was ready waiting for it, sending the ball flying into a sunny late summer sky with plenty of bottom hand. Hammered.

Broad to Dhoni, 1 run, full, wide and dug out past point

Broad is struggling here. He's gripping his right tricep and grimacing. He appears to have pulled a muscle. Yep, he's going straight off and really doesn't look happpy. Steven Finn will complete the over.

Finn to Raina, 2 runs, good start from a man who wouldn't have been expecting to bowl. The ball was nicely full and Raina slapped it down the ground, the batsmen pushing hard for the second run

Finn to Raina, OUT, what a catch from Stokes! Raina chipped a drive inside out over cover, the ball pinging right out of the middle. Stokes initially moved to his left, looking to protect the boundary, but then sensed that it was a catchable chance and sprinted forward, diving to hold the ball inches from the turf. Finn finally finds some reward!

SK Raina c Stokes b Finn 84 (111m 75b 7x4 2x6) SR: 112.00

Finn to Dhoni, no run, Dhoni tries to make the most of a yorker, swinging it to leg, but he finds a fielder and turns down the single, believing he's the one most likely to find a boundary from the last ball

Finn to Dhoni, 1 run, helicopter shot to end the innings, but it flies down to long-on and they can only get a single

2.10pm It's been a stirring fightback from India, who were looking decidedly wobbly at 110 for 4 in the 26th over. Dhoni and Raina started slowly but steadily rebuilt the innings before exploding at the end. Their 169-run stand set a new record for the fifth wicket against England, and quite possibly represents India's best batting performance of the entire tour. Both men timed their innings really well, Raina finishing up with a strike rate of 112 and Dhoni with one of 109.85 despite their achingly slow starts. Read all about India's fightback in Andrew McGlashan's lunchtime report. Speaking of lunch, I'm off to find some. Join us in 20 minutes for the resumption.

"Finally..after 2 months of disguise...i could today recognise the team which won the world cup for us, the team which we are used to see in the last decade, the team India we know." Was it worth the wait, Saurabh Jain?

Ryan responds: "Mazahir- no doubt India's abject failure in the TESTS was terrible, they were full strength and outplayed, but I am talking strictly ODI's, they are an injury ridden side and still manage to expose England's fundamental flaws, which i believe will be more troublesome for England in the ODI portion of the India tour."

Strong words from Subbu: "Talking about the Indian team's abject failure in this series, the 800 lb (replace with your fav weight here, it doesn't matter!) gorilla in the room is the utter disregard by the BCCI for the welfare of Indian cricket. These players are like gladiators...overworked souls whose sweat the BCCI coffers fill. But the BCCI will never admit this and like true addicts the Indian public will keep going back for more!"
