NatWest Series [India in England] - 5th ODI

England v India

England won by 6 wickets (with 10 balls remaining) (D/L method)

2.38pm: The players have made their way out to the middle. We're all set for the start. Parthiv Patel's on strike. Ajinkya Rahane's at the other end. Tim Bresnan will kick things off.

2.30pm: Bright sunshine now, can make people forget it was raining heavily not long ago, albeit for only a minute.

2.15pm The covers are coming off.

2.10pm The rain has stopped. The game, we are told, will now begin at 2.40pm. Assuming there's no more rain, here's what the schedule's like for the rest of the game. No overs lost. 6.10pm interval of 35 minutes, 6.45 to 10.15 second innings.

Manish puts a mythological spin on Varun Aaron's absence: "The rain is the wrath of the Varuna." In Hindu mythology, Varuna is the "god of the oceans" or most water bodies.

2.05pm Play will begin at 2.30pm. That's the update for now.

John Muir: "For all those of us who remember his father David it will be nostalgic to see Johnny Bairstow playing for England. He's made a hundred and three 50s in his last 6 List-A innings and he has a strike rate of 120, so he's a hitter."

2.00pm Or maybe I was over-reacting. It's subsided quite a bit now, in a matter of minutes.

1.56pm local time: Covers coming on, a bit of rain in the air and we're in for a delay. And it's coming down a little heavily, so more bad news. The groundsmen are scrambling to get the covers in order. It's become massive now. The horror, the horror.

Varun Aron's not been picked for this match and we've received quite a few emails from readers baffled at his exclusion. Jasbir's one of them - "Does the indian tem management have any logical explanation for not playing Aaron in any match?Whats the point of calling a youngster abroad and then make him carry drinks when he is supposed to the future bowler to lead your attack!"

A weather update: It's become a little overcast in Cardiff. Some cloud cover now.

Also, don't forget to read Andrew Miller's preview to the game.

We've got a nice, little package ready for Dravid's ODI swansong. Here's what he had to say ahead of the game. Sid Monga has this on a batsman who's of a more traditional mould but went on to become a prolific run-getter in the 50-over version as well. S Rajesh, in his weekly column, gives us the Stats Story on Dravid. Click here for some snapshots of Dravid's ODI career. There will be the tributes, and Sachin Tendulkar leads them. And finally, here's what the press has to say about him.

Toss: Cook wins the toss and opts to bowl. No Anderson, Stokes or Broad. . Yorkshire's Jonny Bairstow makes his debut, Samit Patel gets a look in as well and in comes Jade Dernbach. No Praveen, so Vinay Kumar replaces him.

Hello and welcome to our coverage of the final game of this India-England tour. India have gone winless so far - not counting the tour games - and here's their last chance to gain some consolation. It's a coldish day in Cardiff but the weather seems clear for now. The news is that Praveen Kumar is out of the game due to an injured ankle.

Our man in Cardiff, Nagraj Gollapudi, has the update: Praveen Kumar, India's best bowler on the tour, has injured his ankle while playing football during training on Thursday. "He will not play today due to the injury," informed Shivlal Yadav, Indian manager. According to Yadav, Praveen suffrered a minor twist and the physio prescribed rest considering it is a dead match.

A dead game in the context of the series, but not for Rahul Dravid who will make his final ODI appearance. I'm Sid Talya and I'll be splitting commentary duties with Liam Brickhill for this game.

0.1

Bresnan to PA Patel, 4 leg byes, some swing straightaway, appeal for lbw, landed on leg stump and was moving further down, Parthiv tried to clip that fine, missed but it kissed the pads on the way to the fine-leg boundary. Replays show it pitched mostly outside leg and would have clipped leg, only just.

Two slips in place

0.2

Bresnan to PA Patel, no run, short of a good length outside off, moving away just a hint, leaves it alone

0.3

Bresnan to PA Patel, 1 run, lands on a good length on middle and leg, moves back to turn it into the leg side wide of square leg for a single

Two slips for Rahane as well

0.4

Bresnan to Rahane, 2 runs, turned away off the back foot ot the right of fine leg, dives full length to make it back just in time despite an accurate throw from the deep

0.5

Bresnan to Rahane, 1 run, nipping away after landing on a good length on middle, gets on the back foot and opens the face slightly to guide it behind point for a single

Just the one slip now

0.6

Bresnan to PA Patel, no run, fullish on the off stump, Parthiv gets forward and defends it towards extra cover

End of over 1 (8 runs) India 8/0

AM Rahane    3* (2b)

Steve Finn from the other end. Two slips

1.1

Finn to Rahane, no run, ooh, bangs it hard outside off and it nips away just a hint, a threatening deviation that, just beat the outside edge as Rahane poked at it

1.2

Finn to Rahane, no run, goodish length on the off, gets a stride out and defends it confidently towards cover

1.3

Finn to Rahane, no run, back of a length outside off, nipping away as well, drops his hands on that one

1.4

Finn to Rahane, 1 wide, down the leg side, Rahane doesn't bother chasing, called a wide by the umpire

1.4

Finn to Rahane, 1 wide, a touch too wide on the off side this time, landed wide and moved away further

1.4

Finn to Rahane, 2 runs, angling in towards middle and leg, turned away wide of square leg for a couple more runs

1.5

Finn to Rahane, no run, full on leg stump, tries to work it into the leg side, misses, appeal for lbw, would have probably gone down as he missed it while attempting the flick

1.6

Finn to Rahane, no run, good length a touch outside off, gets forward and dabs that towards cover

Over to Liam Brickhill for the next hour.

Thanks Talya.

2.1

Bresnan to PA Patel, no run, Parthiv comes forward and across to defend solidly to extra cover

The aptly named pugilist hasn't pulled his punches: "How many more games is Vinay Kumar going to get ? Do selectors really think he is one of the prospects ? I cannot believe Varun's been left out in a DEAD RUBBER. More than the tour results, the selection has been baffling."

2.2

Bresnan to PA Patel, 1 run, a touch short of a good length from Bresnan, and Parthiv tucks him behind square for one

2.3

Bresnan to Rahane, no run, Bresnan gets some work on the new ball, shaping it away from Rahane, who raises his arms high tp leave

2.4

Bresnan to Rahane, 1 run, a probing delivery from Bresnan, nipping away off the pitch once more, but it's well played by Rahane, who softens his wrists and plays it down through gully

2.5

Bresnan to PA Patel, 2 runs, slapped on the up past a diving backward point fielder. India's fans in the ground liked that shot

2.6

Bresnan to PA Patel, no run, rising off a length outside off. Parthiv over-hits it a touch straight into the ground, and the ball ends up going nowhere

Ramesh throws his hat in the ring: "for all those who blame the selectors...selectors are not in england..selectors almost never attend the matches themselves..its the captain and the coach who decide on the playing 11.."

3.1

Finn to Rahane, no run, a splice-jarring length from Finn keeps Rahane pinned back in his crease

3.2

Finn to Rahane, no run, fuller, and a touch wider from the gangly fast bowler. Rahane lets it go outside off

3.3

Finn to Rahane, 1 leg bye, Finn thunders to the crease, knees pumping high, and hits the deck hard, the ball nipping off the seam and stinging Rahane's thigh

3.4

Finn to PA Patel, 1 run, good running, Parthiv dropping the ball down close with a defensive shot and the batsmen setting off

3.5

Finn to Rahane, no run, Finn is bowling with vim and vigour. Again he hits the seam, the ball buzzing in past Rahane's bat to hit him on the thigh

3.6

Finn to Rahane, no run, too much for Rahane. Too quick, and the extra bounce and seam movement means bat beats ball once again

End of over 4 (2 runs) India 18/0
AM Rahane    6* (15b)      ST Finn    2-0-5-0
PA Patel    5* (9b)      TT Bresnan    2-0-8-0

4.1

Bresnan to PA Patel, no run, at the other end, Parthiv is happier facing Bresnan, who hits a good length on off stump and is defended to cover

4.2

Bresnan to PA Patel, no run, fuller from Bresnan, not much width but Parthiv still found room for a drive to extra cover

4.3

Bresnan to PA Patel, no run, Bell at backward point saves a couple of runs as the left-handed Parthiv hops onto one leg to cut

4.4

Bresnan to PA Patel, no run, great line! It looked like the cross-seamed delivery from Bresnan, and it really got big on Parthiv as he propped half forward at it. Past the outside edge

4.5

Bresnan to PA Patel, 1 run, sliced in the air through gully! There's no-one there though, and Parthiv is quite safe as he slashes on the up

4.6

Bresnan to Rahane, no run, full and straight. Rahane turns it off the pads to midwicket

End of over 5 (1 run) India 19/0
AM Rahane    6* (16b)      TT Bresnan    3-0-9-0
PA Patel    6* (14b)      ST Finn    2-0-5-0

5.1

Finn to PA Patel, no run, great wheels from Finn, another bristling length delivery is kept out by Parthiv. Finn has really come on as a bowler this summer

5.2

Finn to PA Patel, no run, a little fuller, but still offering nothing for the drive as Parthiv stands at the crease to defend to cover

5.3

Finn to PA Patel, no run, Finn continues to nudge 90mph as this one is sent down fuller still, and is driven to mid-off

5.4

Finn to PA Patel, no run, right up to the bat this time, and dug out off the toe end to cover

5.5

Finn to PA Patel, no run, beaten on the outside edge! Parthiv shuffles at the crease but moves neither forward nor back, and there's plenty of daylight between bat and ball

5.6

Finn to PA Patel, no run, and again! Finn zones in on the perfect line to the left-handed Parthiv, who is left poking and prodding outside off

End of over 6 (maiden) India 19/0

AM Rahane    6* (16b)      TT Bresnan    3-0-9-0

A solitary slip remains in place. And Jos Buttler has come onto the field in place of Ian Bell.

6.1

Bresnan to Rahane, no run, full and straight, Rahane nudging to wide mid-on

6.2

Bresnan to Rahane, no run, metronomic stuff from Bresnan, but Rahane is well forward with bat and pad together to keep it out

6.3

Bresnan to Rahane, no run, Rahane continues to sit in defence, defending another length delivery

6.4

Bresnan to Rahane, no run, nudged just wide of point, but nowhere near the middle and there's no run to be had

6.5

Bresnan to Rahane, 1 run, a touch too straight from Bresnan, and Rahane finally finds the single down to fine leg

6.6

Bresnan to PA Patel, 2 runs, it's in the air ... and safe! Parthiv aimed a wild swipe at a full delivery aimed at middle and off, slicing across it but getting enough on the ball to beat the off-side field

End of over 7 (3 runs) India 22/0

AM Rahane    7* (21b)      ST Finn    3-1-5-0

7.1

Finn to Rahane, no run, this could be Finn's quickest ball of the day so far. It's full and straight, Rahane cracking it back down the pitch before Finn gets a palm to it in his follow-through

7.2

Finn to Rahane, 1 run, ah, Rahane might have made more of this were he in a more attacking mood. A low full toss is sent down but just a single is the result, the ball being flicked down to fine leg

7.3

Finn to PA Patel, 1 run, chopped through gully and down to third man for one

7.4

Finn to Rahane, 2 runs, dropped by Samit Patel at third man! Rahane gave himself room and sliced at the ball, scooping it high towards third man where Patel ran round and set himself to take a regulation chance ... but spilt it and let it through his legs

7.5

Finn to Rahane, no run, and now an appeal for lbw. But it's turned down, and rightly so. The ball had seemed in sharply to strike Rahane on the thigh, and would've sailed well over leg stump

7.6

Finn to Rahane, 1 run, Finn is full to end the over, Rahane stretching forward and tapping a drive just wide of mid-off for one

Hemant writes: "For all the Vinay Kumar bashing, if you were Dhoni would you drop a prospect that has taken 229 wickets at 24 ave in First class cricket for a new one who's played 14 first class innings with an average of 38. Varun's taken a total of 25 wickets in 14 innings and that includes 1 inning with 7 wickets. So, don't know how he's made it here...are we really that desperate for talent?"

8.1

Bresnan to Rahane, no run, rare lapse from Bresnan, but he's not punished as Rahane's cut is stopped at point by Bell

8.2

Bresnan to Rahane, FOUR, not this time! Bresnan is short and wide once again and this time Rahane takes full toll, the ball pinging out of the middle of a cut and racing away

8.3

Bresnan to Rahane, no run, straighter from Bresnan, and Rahane hops back to defend to leg

8.4

Bresnan to Rahane, no run, another full-ish, straight length delivery is pushed softly back towards the bowler

8.5

Bresnan to Rahane, no run, after a poor start to the over Bresnan has come back well, a third delivery is fired at the top of off to draw a defensive stroke from Rahane

8.6

Bresnan to Rahane, FOUR, another boundary! Rahane lifts the ball to long leg with a scoop-flick. Several fielders set off after it, but none can get there in time, and that over has ruined Bresnan's figures a touch

End of over 9 (8 runs) India 35/0

9.1

Finn to PA Patel, 3 runs, clipped in the air but wide of any fielders in the leg side. It's not timed quite well enough to find the boundary, but they push hard for a third run

9.2

Finn to Rahane, no run, Finn stays full to the right-hander, who nudges to the man at midwicket

9.3

Finn to Rahane, no run, a Finn lifter outside off is prodded to point

Deepika responds: "@Hemant: Why not give a chance to the young player when we have already lost the series just to see how he fares. They are not going to give him a chance to play in the important matches. better let him play than serve drinks or else don't do an insult by taking him into the team of 15."

9.4

Finn to Rahane, no run, that is a snorter of a delivery! Again Finn finds disconcerting bounce outside off at good pace. Rahane fishes at it, but the edge is beaten

9.5

Finn to Rahane, FOUR, edged! And four! As in the last match, Finn is finding no reward for some very probing bowling. Rahane was totally squared up by one that left him off the pitch, the ball almost taking the leading edge but flying through third slip and down to the boundary

9.6

Finn to Rahane, 1 run, Finn targets the yorker to finish but isn't quite on target, the ball glanced to fine leg

End of over 10 (8 runs) India 43/0

England call for the Bowling Powerplay as Jade Dernbach comes into the attack for the first time.

10.1

Dernbach to Rahane, 2 leg byes, great start! Dernbach seams his first delivery sharply back in, beating Rahane on the inside edge and rapping him on the front pad. The appeal is turned down as the ball rolls to third man ... Close shout

10.2

Dernbach to Rahane, 1 leg bye, again he hits the pad, but this time the ball goes to leg to allow a single

Meanwhile, Mohammad Hafeez is on a hat-trick in Harare. Sigh.

10.3

Dernbach to PA Patel, 1 run, Parthiv presses forward and opens the face of the bat to get a length delivery down to third man

10.4

Dernbach to Rahane, 1 run, nudged into space by Rahane, another sharp single the result

10.5

Dernbach to PA Patel, 1 run, good running by these two, Parthiv tapping it away for one more

10.6

Dernbach to Rahane, no run, deceived by the slower ball! Well Dernbach didn't wait long to use his favourite weapon, and Rahane didn't really read it at all. He was through his leg-side push before the ball even got to him

End of over 11 (6 runs) India 49/0
AM Rahane    25* (41b 3x4)      JW Dernbach    1-0-3-0

11.1

Finn to PA Patel, 1 run, well, Parthiv had an almighty swipe at this outside off, similar to the shots I play in park cricket. Similar result too, as the ball trickled down to third man

11.2

Finn to Rahane, no run, good intent from Rahane, charging the tall fast bowler. The execution isn't quite there, however, as the ball takes a thick inside edge and cannons off the pad

11.3

Finn to Rahane, no run, the movement in to the right-hander means the ball takes the inside edge again - this time off a drive - and rolls into the leg side

11.4

Finn to Rahane, 1 wide, Finn loses his radar, spearing one down leg. He's very displeased at his own effort, and gives himself a good ticking off as he marches back to his mark

11.4

Finn to Rahane, no run, that's better. Bang on target and Rahane defends

"For first and last time, tell me you are really not "Liam Plunkett"" Abhinav, for the first and last time, I am really not.

11.5

Finn to Rahane, no run, turned wristily into the leg side, but straight to the fielder

11.6

Finn to Rahane, 1 run, and just a single to finish what has been another reasonably tight over from the bowler

Kartik continues the Aaron discussion: "Hemant's logic makes sense as a selector. But once he has been picked in to the squad, one has to assume that he is good enough for this level and merits selection into the playing 11. Period."

12.1

Dernbach to Rahane, OUT, gone! Dernbach strikes. Rahane attempted a mow to leg, but the ball - quite possibly another slower one - took the top edge and looped down to third man, where Finn sprinted across to his left and took a great diving catch

AM Rahane c Finn b Dernbach 26 (54m 47b 3x4 0x6) SR: 55.31

Well, all tour the ovations have been for Sachin. Now Dravid gets one as he walks to the crease for his final ODI innings.

12.2

Dernbach to PA Patel, no run, nudged away in defence after the wicket

12.3

Dernbach to PA Patel, no run, tapped into the off side

12.4

Dernbach to PA Patel, no run, Parthiv looks for that pick-up pull that he plays so well on occasion, but the length wasn't quite right and he didn't come close to putting this away. In fact, the inside edge bounced just past the stumps!

12.5

Dernbach to PA Patel, 1 run, turned off the hip and down to fine leg

Dernbach is disturbed by a gust of wind as he sprints to the crease, and pulls out of his run.

12.6

Dernbach to Dravid, no run, on a length and straight, Dravid presses half forward to defend right under the eyes in his own inimitable style

Finn's length spell continues.

13.1

Finn to PA Patel, no run, and why not, as he fizzes another one past the outside edge of Parthiv's bat

13.2

Finn to PA Patel, 1 run, a touch straighter. There's bat on ball this time, and Parthiv finds a single near midwicket

13.3

Finn to Dravid, no run, meanwhile, Dravid walks into another defensive push

13.4

Finn to Dravid, no run, pace and bounce from Finn, and Dravid is a little hurried as he tucks defensively to leg

13.5

Finn to Dravid, no run, left alone outside off

13.6

Finn to Dravid, no run, another good over from Finn, who keeps things tight with his final delivery, Dravid unable to score

End of over 14 (1 run) India 54/1

14.1

Dernbach to PA Patel, 1 run, Parthiv waits in his crease for a slightly slower length delivery - one of Dernbach's many variations no doubt - and guides it to third man

14.2

Dernbach to Dravid, 1 run, Dravid turns the wrists over a full one and finds a single at midwicket despite the efforts of the fielder there

14.3

Dernbach to PA Patel, no run, Parthiv looks to break free! He dances down the track at Dernbach and swings with gusto, but hits only fresh air

14.4

Dernbach to PA Patel, no run, just short of a good length, but Parthiv is content to defend off the back foot

14.5

Dernbach to PA Patel, no run, slower one! This time Parthiv was looking for the pull to midwicket, but he's undone by the lack of pace

14.6

Dernbach to PA Patel, 1 run, slow yet again. This time it is picked, Parthiv paddling through square leg

Srinath Parthasarathy: "The tour began with India's best bowler hobbling out... It ends with their best bowler on tour twisting his ankle... High-time that India's bowling needs some youthful energy with the likes of Varun, Manpreet given a chance !"

Spin, for the first time today. Swann will start round the wicket to Parthiv, with a slip in place. Five men in the circle.

15.1

Swann to PA Patel, no run, looped down on middle and off, and a bottom-edged cut rolls to cover

15.2

Swann to PA Patel, OUT, a first-over wicket for Swann! It's been a while since he managed that. Parthiv was trying to take advantage of the attacking field, but got underneath an attempted chip down the ground, getting much more height than distance. Bresnan ran back from mid-on and made no mistake. Odd innings from Parthiv. He switched between cautious defence and all-out attack without much success.

16.2

Dernbach to Dravid, no run, a little fuller this time, but it's aimed right at off stump and again Dravid opts for defence

16.3

Dernbach to Dravid, no run, punched, on the up, to cover. Straight to the fielder

16.4

Dernbach to Dravid, FOUR, runs! The gap at cover is miniscule, but Dravid has threaded it to perfection with a backfoot drive. It didn't appear as though he had timed it, but the ball beat the fielder to the boundary

16.5

Dernbach to Dravid, 1 run, and he follows that up with a dinked single

17.3

Swann to Kohli, FOUR, timing! Kohli must have very powerful wrists. He flicked this with the spin, his wrists springing into action, and picked the gap between midwicket and mid-on. A couple of England fielders set off after it, but the ball found its way to the rope

17.4

Swann to Kohli, no run, tapped into the leg side again, no runs this time

17.5

18.2

Dernbach to Kohli, 1 run, Kohli flashes outside off to get the ball down to third man

18.3

Dernbach to Dravid, FOUR, shot! Tremendous stroke from Dravid. He's signing out in style. This was a cut, on the walk and with the weight going forward. The ball screamed out of the middle of the bat, backward point didn't even move

18.4

Dernbach to Dravid, 1 run, a similar stroke from Dravid, but this time the ball takes the bottom half of the bat and goes to third man. Are we seeing evidence of inconsistent bounce?

18.5

The front angle gave us the impression that there might have been some contact with the glove but the side-angle put that impression to rest. Not out.

India have finished with 304, a performance they'll be happy with after the misery they've endured this tour. Kohli struck a sparkling ton, Dravid signed off his ODI batting career on a high and Dhoni finished off the innings on a good note. It's started raining again in Cardiff, so we'll get you an update about any improvement or none. Join us in a bit. Andrew Miller's bulletin should be ready soon. There's an amazing rainbow at the ground now, virtually over the middle of the pitch. A lovely sight.

The rain seems to have stopped.
