Mohammad Aamer, Pakistan's Man of the Match in their series-levelling win at Headingley, is confident that his team can rise to the challenge of taking on England ahead of the first Test which starts on Thursday.
"Playing against England will present new challenges for me and the other bowlers, but I am sure we can do well," he told PakPassion.net. "They are a strong team with a varied batting lineup, but if me and the other bowlers bowl well and consistently then I'm sure we can put up a good challenge".
Aamer picked up match figures of 7 for 106 - his best haul in the 10 Tests he has played so far - to inspire a thrilling three-wicket win over Australia in the second Test, and obviously enjoyed the experience. "I really enjoyed bowling at Headingley, I wish I could bowl here on this pitch every day," he said.
In helpful conditions on the first day Australia were improbably rolled over for just 88, but as the pitch eased out Aamer showed considerable patience and a maturity beyond his 18 years to nip out four second-innings wickets - including the vital one of Ricky Ponting, caught behind for 66 early on the third morning.
"When the sun came out, it was tougher for the bowlers and we really had to be patient and consistent with our line and length," he explained. "I knew I had to pitch it up and look for swing and not bowl short. The coach told me that if I bowled the nagging length where the batsman doesn't know whether to come forward or go back, then that would really challenge them.
"That's what I concentrated on, the length. I felt that I could have bowled a bit quicker, but that may have affected the length, so I concentrated more on bowling the length that Waqar bhai had talked about."
Conditions are likely to suit the bowlers at Trent Bridge, where there is usually appreciable movement through the air, and a full length will once again be vital. Pakistan's inexperienced middle order has not quite clicked yet, and it is likely that any further success will be built around the efforts of the three-pronged attack of Aamer, Mohammad Asif and Umar Gul.

Posted by AhmadHarrisKiani on (July 26 2010, 18:03 PM GMT)I find it amazing that any success tasted by the Pakistan cricket team for the past 3 decades can be traced back to Imran Khan. Aamir is one of the finds of the decade. The other being Asif of course. Now another Imran protege Waqar Younis is instilling in these young guns what Imran instilled in him, Wasim, Aaqib Javed and Mushtaq Ahmed. It is important to note here that while Waqar has been an excellent mentor for Aamir's on field success, he will have to extend his role to off the field as well especially for the young bowlers. Else we may see Aamir becoming another Asif. Frankly, we need discipline more than we need talented players because time after time, raw talent has been wasted in the absence of paternal figures in the team. Shoaib is one such case. Salman Butt has said clearly that he won't be as paternal as Inzimam and quite rightly so. Captaincy has never been a popularity contest and it's time to make a few bold choices. The obvious being to drop Shoaib Malik for good :)
Posted by fastballer138 on (July 26 2010, 17:10 PM GMT)I really hope that Pak can win this tour because I am tired of Pak losing each and every tour since the tour all the way from 2008, and I really want the 2 greats Younis and Yousuf to come back because Pak has a very fragile batting line up without them and with Boom Boom Afridi gone from the test format the only experienced players are Salman Butt, Shoaib Malik, and Kamran Akmal, but the youngster Azhar Ali looks a bright future for Pak in the test format, and a big challenge for Pak in this tour will be the danger of the world class batsman Strauss, Cook, KP, Collingwood, and Trott is also a good batsman.

Posted by Yassar on (July 26 2010, 16:17 PM GMT)There is no doubt Mohammad Aamer is the find for Pakistan, well not just for Pakistan but for cricket in general. Therefore it is extremely important that he is looked after and nurtured so he remains potent, effective and most of all injury free. I do fear for him though and Pakistan's over - reliance on this young talent. I think its important to note that Pakistan winning the Headingly test match against Australia and competing in the Lords test match was purely on the back of their bowling attack. The batsman barring Salman Butt at Lords did not make much of a contribution. They almost made a mess up of a simple chase at Headingly. Therefore unless Pakistan fix their batting they will always fall back on their bowling and this young man in particular to get them out of the mess their batsmen get them into. They need to recall Yousuf & Younis to balance the team. You can not hide the incompetence of the Pakistani batting through one victory set up and made by the bowlers.

Posted by hasancheema on (July 26 2010, 13:13 PM GMT)the Era of YK and MY has ended,,, its new age of pakistani cricket... Yousaf does not deserve a place in pak team on disciplinary grounds... Muhammad Yousaf has retired from International cricket.. jusl like javed miandad and Miandad is bigger player than yousaf... so i recommend to bring back retired Miandad instead of Retired Yousaf.
