Pakistan tour of England, 1st T20I: England v Pakistan at Cardiff, Sep 5, 2010
England won by 5 wickets (with 17 balls remaining)
5 September 2010 (20-over match)

Liam here, back again for another spell. Kieswetter and Davies will open England's batting, and interestingly Abdul Razzaq has the ball in his hands. "Can't wait to see Shoaib Akhtar beat his fastest ball record today," writes Rahman, perhaps a little optimistically.

Abdul Razzaq to Kieswetter, 1 run, squirted off the outside edge straight away, uppish but through the gully and well wide of any fielder

Abdul Razzaq to Davies, no run, leaden-footed waft from Davies first ball, and he's beaten on the outside edge as the ball just seams away from him a touch

Abdul Razzaq to Davies, 2 runs, leading edge! Chipped over cover! Davies was trying to whip that through midwicket but the ball just stopped in the wicket to take the leading edge. Falls safely though

Abdul Razzaq to Davies, 1 run, and now an inside edge past the stumps! It's all happening out there, and life is proving hard for batsmen on both teams!

Abdul Razzaq to Kieswetter, FOUR, or is it? Kieswetter runs down the wicket and thumps a full ball infront of point. That came out of the middle, and Kieswetter's on the attack

Abdul Razzaq to Kieswetter, 1 run, again he charges down the track, this time looking to go over midwicket. But the ball takes the inside edge of the bat and goes nowhere

End of over 1 (9 runs) England 9/0 (118 runs required from 19 overs, RR: 9.00, RRR: 6.21)

    • C Kieswetter 6 (3b 1x4)
    • SM Davies 3 (3b)
    • Abdul Razzaq 1-0-9-0

Shoaib Akhtar to open the bowling from the other end

Shoaib Akhtar to Kieswetter, no run, Shoaib steams in, banging this one in halfway down! Kieswetter sways back and drops the hands, and Shoaib wanders down towards him for a quick word

Shoaib Akhtar to Kieswetter, no run, back of a length again, nudged into the leg side

They've pushed a man out into the deep on the off side now, cover sweeper

Shoaib Akhtar to Kieswetter, no run, beaten on the outside edge! Good pace, bounce and carry for Shoaib, and that's 92.3mph

Shoaib Akhtar to Kieswetter, OUT, Shoaib strikes! Three dot balls and the pressure was getting to Kieswetter, he aimed an enormous swipe to leg but succeeded only in getting a thick edge. Kamran holds on to the chance, and Shoaib's trademark airplane celebration comes out! He blows a kiss to Kieswetter as he runs past him too!

C Kieswetter c †Kamran Akmal b Shoaib Akhtar 6 (5m 7b 1x4 0x6) SR: 85.71

Shoaib Akhtar to Bopara, no run, on a length, on or around off stump. Not much in the way of movement, but good pace and nothing to be done with it

Shoaib Akhtar to Bopara, no run, quick again, and an inside edge rockets past the stumps! Straight to short fine leg though, so no run

Well, an impressive opening over from Shoaib. He bowled with real pace and aggression, and has started with a wicket maiden

End of over 2 (wicket maiden) England 9/1 (118 runs required from 18 overs, RR: 4.50, RRR: 6.55)

    • RS Bopara 0 (2b)
    • SM Davies 3 (3b)
    • Shoaib Akhtar 1-1-0-1
    • Abdul Razzaq 1-0-9-0

Abdul Razzaq to Davies, 2 runs, nudged carefully through midwicket for a couple, nothing expansive just placing the ball there

Abdul Razzaq to Davies, 2 runs, this one was slightly more of a heave from Davies, but again he places it well and picks up two more to midwicket

Abdul Razzaq to Davies, FOUR, good batting from Davies, he backed away to leg and Razzaq followed him. But he picked up the line and length early and just lifted it over short fine leg for four

Abdul Razzaq to Davies, no run, now, has he been beaten or did he leave this? Razzaq landed one on a length and Davies just left the bat hanging there as the ball burst past the outside edge

Abdul Razzaq to Davies, 2 runs, flicked through midwicket, and that'll be two more as Davies scampers back

Abdul Razzaq to Davies, 1 run, flicked to short fine leg, and Shoaib defies the years to leap to his left and cut that off! Great fielding from the fiery fast bowler

End of over 3 (11 runs) England 20/1 (107 runs required from 17 overs, RR: 6.66, RRR: 6.29)

    • SM Davies 14 (9b 1x4)
    • RS Bopara 0 (2b)
    • Abdul Razzaq 2-0-20-0
    • Shoaib Akhtar 1-1-0-1

Shoaib, who is already sweating profusely and looks utterly knackered, will have another over here.

Shoaib Akhtar to Davies, 1 wide, slower ball from Shoaib, but the line's all wrong and the ball is sprayed down the leg side

Shoaib Akhtar to Davies, 1 run, lobbed, chipped, but short of mid-on! Tennis ball bounce off the pitch to take the leading edge of Davies' bat once again, but it was such a bad connection in the shot as he tried to flick to leg that the ball didn't get very far at all

Shoaib Akhtar to Bopara, no run, resounding crack off the bat as Bopara leans forward and defends a full, fast ball solidly into the covers

Shoaib Akhtar to Bopara, FOUR, short, wide and Bopara grabs four with a flashing cut! There was plenty of pace on the ball, but it was much too wide. Bopara slashed at it with both feet in the air, and got great timing in the shot to send the ball racing away

Shoaib Akhtar to Bopara, no run, inswinger from Shoaib, striking Bopara on the pad but going well over the stumps and the appeal is quickly quashed. Bopara thinks about a quick single but is immediately sent back - and rightly so, as the throw comes in and shatters the stumps

Shoaib Akhtar to Bopara, 2 runs, very, very quick from Shoaib! Back of a length outside off, but it's treated with disdain by Bopara, who walks down the pitch and swings the ball into the leg side

Shoaib Akhtar to Bopara, 2 runs, another hopping uppercut from Bopara as Shoaib bangs this in, but it's cut off before the rope as there was a man out on the cover boundary

End of over 4 (10 runs) England 30/1 (97 runs required from 16 overs, RR: 7.50, RRR: 6.06)

    • RS Bopara 8 (7b 1x4)
    • SM Davies 15 (10b 1x4)
    • Shoaib Akhtar 2-1-10-1
    • Abdul Razzaq 2-0-20-0

Change in the bowling as Wahab Riaz replaces Razzaq

Wahab Riaz to Davies, no run, Riaz finds some seam movement straight away, jagging the ball away from the left-handed Davies to beat the outside edge

Wahab Riaz to Davies, FOUR, ooh, but it's a filthy follow-up from Riaz. Meaty half-volley outside off and Davies isn't going to miss out on that, cracking a drive up and over cover

Wahab Riaz to Davies, 2 runs, full, but speared at leg stump this side and clipped out to long leg, where Umar Gul fumbles to let them back for another run

Wahab Riaz to Davies, 1 run, could've been run out! The ball was tapped straight to Umar, a frantic single was taken as the throw was fired in, but Davies is home! Riaz was in front of the stumps, grabbing the ball and trying to flick it onto the stumps. If he had been behind the stumps and that had hit, it could've been a different story...

Wahab Riaz to Bopara, no run, carefully pushed behind square on the off side

Wahab Riaz to Bopara, no run, very full but wide of off, Bopara jams the bat down on the ball but can't get it away

End of over 5 (7 runs) England 37/1 (90 runs required from 15 overs, RR: 7.40, RRR: 6.00)

    • RS Bopara 8 (9b 1x4)
    • SM Davies 22 (14b 2x4)
    • Wahab Riaz 1-0-7-0
    • Shoaib Akhtar 2-1-10-1

Afridi is going to give Shoaib another over here

Shoaib Akhtar to Davies, 1 run, back of a length, just outside off and quick. Davies just drops the ball into the off side and they steal a scrambled single

Shoaib's just lost his rhythm in his run-up, he pulls out and is going to try that one again...

Shoaib Akhtar to Bopara, no run, on a length, Bopara punches the ball back to Shoaib, who picks it up in his follow-through and threatens to throw the stumps down. And then, just for good measure, he walks down to give Bopara a good, old-fashioned fast bowler's stare

Shoaib Akhtar to Bopara, no run, great slower ball from Shoaib! Bopara was slightly wrong-footed as the ball got to him, but managed to get bat on ball and protest his stumps

Shoaib Akhtar to Bopara, 3 runs, and he follows that with a quick bouncer, but Bopara is quickly into position to hook it away ... he struggles to time the shot, however, and the ball plugs as it lands in the outfield

Shoaib Akhtar to Davies, 1 leg bye, spicy bowling from Shoaib, 95.6mph, but it's pushed slightly down the leg side. The ball comes off Davies' pad and they take a leg bye

Shoaib Akhtar to Bopara, OUT, what an effort! Two men with a combined age of 71 get together to remove Bopara! It was another quick, length delivery from Shoaib just outside off and Bopara tried to heave it to long-on. He got right underneath though, and Yousuf backpeddled as quickly as he could from mid-on, tottering slightly as he went but he managed to cling on. Smiles all round

RS Bopara c Mohammad Yousuf b Shoaib Akhtar 11 (20m 13b 1x4 0x6) SR: 84.61

End of over 6 (5 runs) England 42/2 (85 runs required from 14 overs, RR: 7.00, RRR: 6.07)

    • SM Davies 23 (16b 2x4)
    • Shoaib Akhtar 3-1-14-2
    • Wahab Riaz 1-0-7-0

Shoaib's going to take a well-earned rest after that, he looks utterly spent. That over also marks the end of the fielding restrictions, but the spinners will be held back for the moment as Riaz continues

Wahab Riaz to Collingwood, 1 run, nudged to short fine leg

Wahab Riaz to Davies, no run, Davies looks a touch suspect when he doesn't move his feet to the shorter length deliveries, as happens here. Beaten on the outside edge as he pushes at the ball from the crease

Wahab Riaz to Davies, 1 run, width offered outside off, and the ball is clattered out to the man on the cover boundary

Umar, in addition to his lime green lipstick, is wearing shiny green shoes that honestly don't look like they were designed for cricket. With the flares in his trousers to complete the look, he looks like something out of Saturday Night Fever

Wahab Riaz to Collingwood, 1 run, tap and run from Colly, and the shy comes in from mid-off but it's wide of the stumps and he's home

Wahab Riaz to Davies, no run, speared down the leg side, the ball clips something on the way through to Kamran and there's an appeal for a catch but it's a half-hearted one. Looked to have come off the thigh pad

Wahab Riaz to Davies, 1 run, a touch of width outside off again, and Davies picks up one to the cover sweeper

End of over 7 (4 runs) England 46/2 (81 runs required from 13 overs, RR: 6.57, RRR: 6.23)

    • SM Davies 25 (20b 2x4)
    • PD Collingwood 2 (2b)
    • Wahab Riaz 2-0-11-0
    • Shoaib Akhtar 3-1-14-2

We will see spin now, as Afridi brings himself on. The ball was spinning square when Swann was bowling - even Yardy turned a few

Shahid Afridi to Davies, no run, wrong 'un to start, and Davies chops down to short third man

Shahid Afridi to Davies, 2 runs, now that looked like an offspinner, it was full outside off and Davies drove into the off side

Shahid Afridi to Davies, FOUR, shocking fielding from Gul! The ball was crashed out into the off side, he sprinted after it but managed simply to escort it to the ropes and then tumble over his own feet in an effort to stop it

Shahid Afridi to Davies, 1 run, tapped behind square on the off side for a single

Shahid Afridi to Collingwood, 2 runs, Colly nurdles through midwicket, and some good running gets him two

Shahid Afridi to Collingwood, OUT, gone this time! Afridi really held this one back, very slow through the air and it was the legspinner. It was pitched slightly short and Collingwood was waiting to thump a pull over midwicket, but the ball took the inside edge of his bat and cannoned into the stumps. Afridi strikes in his first over!

PD Collingwood b Shahid Afridi 4 (6m 4b 0x4 0x6) SR: 100.00

End of over 8 (9 runs) England 55/3 (72 runs required from 12 overs, RR: 6.87, RRR: 6.00)

    • SM Davies 32 (24b 3x4)
    • Shahid Afridi 1-0-9-1
    • Wahab Riaz 2-0-11-0

Umar Gul will have a chance to make up for the fielding lapse - he's got the ball in his hands now

Umar Gul to Davies, no run, full outside off to start, Davies drives watchfully to mid-off, who is up

Gul's not happy with that field placing though, and now mid-off is going back to long-off

Umar Gul to Davies, 1 run, very full outside off once again, and chipped over point by Davies. Umar Akmal sprints round to cut it off and rockets in a really good throw to his brother

Umar Gul to Morgan, no run, on a length, outside off and angling across Morgan. The batsman tries to cut it away behind square but finds Fawad Alam

Umar Gul to Morgan, no run, nice, tight bowling from Gul as he fires this one full on off stump. Morgan defends to extra cover and "no!" is the call

Umar Gul to Morgan, 1 run, Morgan walks across to the off side and flicks a low full toss towards Saeed Ajmal ... they set off for what could have been a suicidal single, but Ajmal - whose hands were "trembling" as the ball approached him according to Ramiz Raja - can't field cleanly

Umar Gul to Davies, OUT, it doesn't matter, he's got a wicket with his next ball! Gul strikes to remove the set batsman and Davies departs. The ball was back of a length, but not all that short. Davies played a whipped-pull off his hip but hit the ball in the air and straight to Riaz

SM Davies c Wahab Riaz b Umar Gul 33 (41m 27b 3x4 0x6) SR: 122.22

End of over 9 (2 runs) England 57/4 (70 runs required from 11 overs, RR: 6.33, RRR: 6.36)

    • EJG Morgan 1 (3b)
    • Umar Gul 1-0-2-1
    • Shahid Afridi 1-0-9-1

Shahid Afridi to Morgan, no run, full and flat, Morgan drives to cover

Shahid Afridi to Morgan, FOUR, great shot from Morgan! He moved across to the off side and ran the ball off the face of the bat very fine down to fine leg. Good thinking, and superb placement. A calm shot

Shahid Afridi to Morgan, no run, this time he tries to slap the ball away behind square on the off side, but hits the field

Shahid Afridi to Morgan, 1 run, chopped into the covers, and they sprint through for one

Shahid Afridi to Wright, no run, pulled down a touch short, Wright cuts but hits the point fielder

Shahid Afridi to Wright, OUT, bowled! Wright shuffled across to off and tried to paddle-sweep the ball away, but it was too full for the shot, sneaking past the bat and crashing into the stumps! Afridi has another one, and Pakistan are right in this game

LJ Wright b Shahid Afridi 0 (1m 2b 0x4 0x6) SR: 0.00

And with that, I'm going to hand over to Sahil

End of over 10 (5 runs) England 62/5 (65 runs required from 60 balls, RR: 6.20, RRR: 6.50)

    • EJG Morgan 6 (7b 1x4)
    • Shahid Afridi 2-0-14-2
    • Umar Gul 1-0-2-1

Thanks Liam. Ah Pakistan, never more than a moment away from either the sublime or ridiculous. They are all over England at the moment and with Saeed Ajmal still in the bank they are big favourites now.

Umar Gul to Morgan, FOUR, Eoin Morgan is the key for England, his calmness is incredible, here he eases a cover drive through point sending it racing away for four

Umar Gul to Morgan, 1 run, dropped into the off side, Morgan scampers off for a single to bring Yardy on strike

Umar Gul to Yardy, 1 run, good shot first up from Yardy, walking from his stance well outside leg stump into line and creaming a drive to deep point

Umar Gul to Morgan, 1 run, poor delivery from Gul but Morgan can't take full toll, cutting a short and wide delivery straight to the man at deep point

Umar Gul to Yardy, no run, good delivery this time, heading for the top of off and Yardy can do nothing but nudge it to point

Umar Gul to Yardy, FOUR, neatly played from Yardy and... oh goodness, Shoaib Akhtar has made an absolute hash of a routine stop, it was flicked round the corner for what should have been a single to fine leg but Shoaib managed to fluff it entirely

End of over 11 (11 runs) England 73/5 (54 runs required from 54 balls, RR: 6.63, RRR: 6.00)

    • MH Yardy 5 (3b 1x4)
    • EJG Morgan 12 (10b 2x4)
    • Umar Gul 2-0-13-1
    • Shahid Afridi 2-0-14-2

Shahid Afridi to Morgan, 1 run, nicely done from Morgan, skipping down the pitch and nudging down the ground for a single

Shahid Afridi to Yardy, 2 runs, bit of a mix up here because Morgan runs twice as fast as Yardy and called through for a second with Yardy still wheezing from the first

Shahid Afridi to Yardy, 1 run, single taken this time with no alarms

Shahid Afridi to Morgan, no run, well well well, if his fielding last over was poor this drop from Shoaib was absolutely grim. The Morgan reverse-sweep looped gently straight to Shoaib who put down the simplest chance

Shahid Afridi to Morgan, 1 run, chopped to cover for a single

Shahid Afridi to Yardy, 1 run, this time Yardy pokes carefully to cover for a single

End of over 12 (6 runs) England 79/5 (48 runs required from 48 balls, RR: 6.58, RRR: 6.00)

    • MH Yardy 9 (6b 1x4)

    • Shahid Afridi 3-0-20-2
    • Umar Gul 2-0-13-1

Here's Saeed Ajmal, who is one of the best in the business in Twenty20 cricket.

Saeed Ajmal to Yardy, FOUR, top shot from Yardy first up, really excellent shot, leaning into a cover drive and sending it speeding to the boundary

Saeed Ajmal to Yardy, 2 runs, dropped by Kamran, tough chance as it flicked the edge, Kamran didn't even get a hand on it, it just flicked the edge and went off his knee

Saeed Ajmal to Yardy, 1 run, this time a single taken more securely

Saeed Ajmal to Morgan, FOUR, oh lovely shot, Morgan just opens the face a fraction and allows it to run off the face for a boundary

Slip brought into place now.

Saeed Ajmal to Morgan, 1 run, Morgan stretches forward to dab this into the leg side for a single

Saeed Ajmal to Yardy, 1 run, Yardy pokes a top-spinner in front of square on the leg side to collect a single and finish a good over for England

End of over 13 (13 runs) England 92/5 (35 runs required from 42 balls, RR: 7.07, RRR: 5.00)

    • MH Yardy 17 (10b 2x4)

    • Shahid Afridi 3-0-20-2

Shahid Afridi to Yardy, no run, sliding away, slightly quicker ball from Afridi and it beats the outside edge

Shahid Afridi to Yardy, 1 run, this is more secure, Yardy back in his crease and pushing into the leg side for a single

Shahid Afridi to Morgan, 1 run, tucked away wide of square leg for an ambled single

Shahid Afridi to Yardy, 1 run, full toss from Afridi, Yardy chips it down the ground for a single, that's all England need now

Shahid Afridi to Morgan, no run, this is a good ball, sliding away from the left hander and beating Morgan outside off stump

Shahid Afridi to Morgan, FOUR, excellent work from Morgan! How expensive will that drop prove, this is cut firmly past point for another boundary, England back in charge now

End of over 14 (7 runs) England 99/5 (28 runs required from 36 balls, RR: 7.07, RRR: 4.66)

    • EJG Morgan 24 (18b 4x4)
    • MH Yardy 19 (13b 2x4)
    • Shahid Afridi 4-0-27-2
    • Saeed Ajmal 1-0-13-0

Saeed Ajmal to Yardy, 2 runs, full toss bunted down the ground for a couple

Saeed Ajmal to Yardy, no run, slightly shorter and Yardy defends from deep in his crease

Saeed Ajmal to Yardy, FOUR, oh lovely shot, Yardy is playing a blinder here, deep in his crease and deflecting the ball past the keeper and inside of third man for four

Saeed Ajmal to Yardy, 2 runs, too quick from Ajmal, not finding the turn Swann did, Yardy flicks it to deep midwicket for a couple

Saeed Ajmal to Yardy, no run, big appeal from Ajmal, massive appeal as Yardy misses a sweep, but it struck outside the line

Saeed Ajmal to Yardy, no run, big appeal again but this was even more optimistic, striking the pad well outside off

"Staying up on a school night because we need a win now more than ever," writes Maryam. "And this is coming from a cynic."

End of over 15 (8 runs) England 107/5 (20 runs required from 30 balls, RR: 7.13, RRR: 4.00)

    • MH Yardy 27 (19b 3x4)

    • Saeed Ajmal 2-0-21-0

Pakistan need some magic and Afridi has called on Shoaib who almost won and lost this game for Pakistan with brilliant bowling and utterly woeful fielding.

Shoaib Akhtar to Morgan, 2 runs, good running gets Morgan a couple first up, driving off the back foot to cover and scampering a couple

Shoaib Akhtar to Morgan, 1 run, this time it's a touch shorter and Morgan flicks off his hip round the corner for a single

Shoaib Akhtar to Yardy, 2 runs, Yardy brings up the 50 stand and what a partnership it's been, Yardy calmly drives this to deep cover for a couple, he's timed the ball really sweetly today

Shoaib Akhtar to Yardy, no run, good delivery, tucking Yardy up and he pushes it to midwicket

Shoaib Akhtar to Yardy, no run, sharp bouncer that Yardy actually plays too early on, jumping back and flashing on to a pull shot before the ball had arrived

Shoaib Akhtar to Yardy, FOUR, great timing from Yardy once more and he's picked out the right fielder too, Yousuf wheezing alongside the ball, escorting it to the deep midwicket boundary to end Shoaib's spell

End of over 16 (9 runs) England 116/5 (11 runs required from 24 balls, RR: 7.25, RRR: 2.75)

    • MH Yardy 33 (23b 4x4)
    • EJG Morgan 27 (20b 4x4)
    • Shoaib Akhtar 4-1-23-2
    • Saeed Ajmal 2-0-21-0

Saeed Ajmal to Morgan, 2 runs, Morgan down very early to sweep and dabs it neatly behind him for a couple

Saeed Ajmal to Morgan, FOUR, big open space at cow corner and Morgan finds the gap with an ugly-looking pull, mighty effective though

Saeed Ajmal to Morgan, 1 run, Morgan gives himself room and cuts a single to deep point

Saeed Ajmal to Yardy, no run, how about this, Yardy leaves alone outside off stump. England pretty much there now, this partnership has made it into a doddle

Saeed Ajmal to Yardy, 2 runs, fetches a sweep from way outside off towards deep backward square leg, excellent running once again

Saeed Ajmal to Yardy, no run, carefully driven to mid off, so Morgan will get a chance to hit the winnings runs

End of over 17 (9 runs) England 125/5 (2 runs required from 18 balls, RR: 7.35, RRR: 0.66)

    • MH Yardy 35 (26b 4x4)
    • EJG Morgan 34 (23b 5x4)
    • Saeed Ajmal 3-0-30-0
    • Shoaib Akhtar 4-1-23-2

Umar Gul to Morgan, FOUR, Morgan's done it, wow, this partnership has won England the game in a flash, short ball from Gul that Morgan crashes through point to the boundary to seal the result. He runs down and gives Yardy a big hug and the World Twenty20 champions won this at a canter in the end

England win by five wickets At one stage Pakistan were bossing this contest but their shambolic fielding coupled with Morgan and Yardy's calmness meant England ended up coasting to victory. England have now won six T20 games in a row.

Shahid Afridi says he feels that 140 would have been a more competitive total but thinks England's spinners and Ryan Sidebottom bowled very well. Paul Collingwood looks a satisfied man and he too credits England's bowlers, saying that Swann could turn it on ice at the moment.

Michael Yardy is named Man of the match for his 1-21 with the ball and unbeaten 35 from 26 balls with the bat. He came out with in England in a hole but played superbly and thoroughly deserves the award.

Andrew Miller has his final match bulletin ready for your perusal, so check that out.

That's all from us, nice to spend some time talking about actual cricket, thanks for all the emails and I hope you'll join us for the second Twenty20 game of this series on Tuesday at 6.00pm.
