Pakistan tour of England, 2nd T20I: England v Pakistan at Cardiff, Sep 7, 2010
England won by 6 wickets (with 36 balls remaining)
7 September 2010 - night match (20-over match)

5.59pm Out come the players, Paul Collingwood leading England onto the field. Pakistan's openers are Kamran Akmal and Shahzaib Hasan. Once again, Ryan Sidebottom will have first use of the new ball for England. Two slips in place at the start.

5.56pm This season our friends at NatWest are celebrating 30 years of support for cricket in England. You can look back at great NatWest cricket moments over the years on their official site, powered by ESPNcricinfo.

5.54pm Once again, the match ball is delivered to the ground by RAF parachutists, and Andrew Miller has this eye-witness testimony: "Some hairy moments as the RAF parachutists came in to land. One nearly kicked the Sky producer in the head as she ran for cover on the outfield, another nearly totalled his mate into the boundary boards as he skidded on a damp outfield."

5.44pm Shahid Afridi called correctly at the toss, and Pakistan will bat first. Afridi reckons there are runs to be had on what he thinks is a good batting surface. There's one change to his team, with Mohammad Hafeez coming in for Wahab Riaz, and Afridi also suggests that he, Abdul Razzaq and Umar Akmal will be sent up the order. Quite how that will mix the batting order up is, as yet, unclear. England, unsurprisingly, will field an unchanged squad. If the home side wins today, they'll set a new record for consecutive wins in Twenty20 internationals.

Pakistan: 1 Shahzaib Hasan, 2 Kamran Akmal (wk), 3 Mohammad Hafeez, 4 Fawad Alam, 5 Mohammad Yousuf, 6 Umar Akmal, 7 Shahid Afridi (capt), 8 Abdul Razzaq, 9 Umar Gul, 10 Saeed Ajmal, 11 Shoaib Akhtar

England: 1 Craig Kieswetter, 2 Steve Davies (wk), 3 Ravi Bopara, 4 Paul Collingwood, 5 Eoin Morgan, 6 Luke Wright, 7 Tim Bresnan, 8 Michael Yardy, 9 Graeme Swann, 10 Stuart Broad, 11 Ryan Sidebottom

5.35pm While the players stretch and go about their pre-game routines, the umpires are out inspecting the square - though most of the covers are still on. We will have the toss in about five minutes though, so there's a good chance that any delay to the start will be very minor indeed.

5.27pm Good news! The covers are still on but it's stopped raining and the players are warming up on the outfield.

5.15pm Greetings, cricket fans, and welcome to ESPNcricinfo's coverage of the second Twenty20 between England and Pakistan in Cardiff. Unfortunately I must start today's commentary off with a decidedly frustrating update: with less than an hour to go until the scheduled start of play, it's hosing down in Cardiff so steady yourself because we might be in for a bit of a delay. And it had been mostly sunny for much of the day until just now!

0.1

Sidebottom to Kamran Akmal, no run, loosener on a length on off stump to start, and Kamran just has a look and taps into the covers. Both bowler and batsman seem a little uncertain as to how this pitch will play

0.2

Sidebottom to Kamran Akmal, FOUR, just the one sighter for Kamran then, as Sidebottom pitches this one a little fuller outside off and Kamran drives handsomely up and over cover! No swing as yet

0.3

Sidebottom to Kamran Akmal, 2 runs, Sidebottom straightens his line and shortens his length, and Kamran shuffles to off and clips him out to deep square leg

0.4

Sidebottom to Kamran Akmal, no run, a hint of movement towards the slips but no more than that. Kamran looks to run the ball down behind square but finds the man at gully

Swann is out of the slips straight away, and goes to midwicket. Good move, there's no swing!

0.5

Sidebottom to Kamran Akmal, FOUR, short and fast from Sidebottom, but an unflustered Kamran just rocks back and cracks a powerful pull out to the long leg boundary!

0.6

Sidebottom to Kamran Akmal, 1 run, tap and run from Kamran as he nudges into the leg side

Expensive first over from Sidebottom, but so was his first effort in the first game and he came back very well after that

End of over 1 (11 runs) Pakistan 11/0 (RR: 11.00)

    • Kamran Akmal 11 (6b 2x4)
    • Shahzaib Hasan 0 (0b)
    • RJ Sidebottom 1-0-11-0

Tim Bresnan will share the new ball. One slip still in for him, otherwise the field is spread

1.1

Bresnan to Kamran Akmal, no run, on a length on off stump, Kamran comes half forward and drives to extra cover

1.2

Bresnan to Kamran Akmal, no run, nice, tight line from Bresnan. Kamran's got no room to work with and can only punch to mid-on

1.3

Bresnan to Kamran Akmal, no run, the line is good once again, this time Bresnan is a little fuller but Kamran can only pick out that man at mid-on

1.4

Bresnan to Kamran Akmal, OUT, top-edged pull, a steepling chance to mid-on and Kamran falls! Deja vu from his dismissal in the first game, the ball, the shot and the result are all the same!

Kamran Akmal c Swann b Bresnan 11 (6m 10b 2x4 0x6) SR: 110.00

Mohammad Yousuf enters at No. 3 for Pakistan

1.5

Bresnan to Shahzaib Hasan, 1 run, tucked wide of midwicket and a quick single is immediately called for, Shahzaib off the mark. Good running

1.6

Bresnan to Mohammad Yousuf, 1 run, sharp yorker from Bresnan first ball! Yousuf slams the bat down to dig it out just in time!

End of over 2 (2 runs) Pakistan 13/1 (RR: 6.50)

    • Mohammad Yousuf 1 (1b)

Identical tactics from England, once again Stuart Broad is brought on after one over from Sidebottom. "Are we just watching a replay from two days ago?" asks Gnasher, quite reasonably

2.1

Broad to Mohammad Yousuf, no run, bouncer to start! Which is, I'm pretty sure, just how Broad started in the last game! It was really rather too short, however, and Yousuf was easily underneath it

2.2

Broad to Mohammad Yousuf, no run, Yousuf is squared up a touch as Broad bangs another one in back of a length. No major drama

2.3

Broad to Mohammad Yousuf, 1 run, dropped by Morgan at backward point! It was short and wait, Yousuf went for a scything cut but couldn't keep it down. A head high chance flew straight to him but he couldn't hold on, parrying the chance over his head

2.4

Broad to Shahzaib Hasan, 2 runs, slightly leg-sidish from Broad, and Shahzaib clips him neatly behind square for a couple

2.5

Broad to Shahzaib Hasan, no run, another quick bouncer from Broad, whistling high over leg stump as Shahzaib shuffles to off and attempts a hook, but can't lay bat on ball

2.6

Broad to Shahzaib Hasan, no run, Broad continues with the short-pitched attack, this time striking Shahzaib on the glove as he tries to work him to fine leg

End of over 3 (3 runs) Pakistan 16/1 (RR: 5.33)

3.1

Bresnan to Mohammad Yousuf, 2 runs, aggression from Yousuf! It was a full ball from Bresnan but not a half-volley by any means. But Yousuf picked up the length early, aiming a wristy chip out to deep midwicket

3.2

Bresnan to Mohammad Yousuf, OUT, bouncer from Bresnan, and it's pulled ... but straight to Bopara at deep square leg! Again he picked up the length early, deliberately pulled the ball in the air but just couldn't get the connection he was hoping for. Pakistan wobble...

Mohammad Yousuf c Bopara b Bresnan 4 (4m 6b 0x4 0x6) SR: 66.66

Umar Akmal comes in ahead of Fawad Alam

3.3

Bresnan to Umar Akmal, 1 run, Umar chops down past gully to get off the mark first ball... that should have been an easy two, but he dropped his bat as he reached the non-striker's end!

3.4

Bresnan to Shahzaib Hasan, no run, beaten outside off, a nondescript waft at a back of a length delivery outside off

3.5

Bresnan to Shahzaib Hasan, no run, Shahzaib tries to guide another short of length delivery down behind square, but the ball just rushes on to him and cramps him for room a touch too

3.6

Bresnan to Shahzaib Hasan, no run, bouncer to finish the over, and Shahzaib is content to duck underneath it

End of over 4 (3 runs) Pakistan 19/2 (RR: 4.75)

    • Shahzaib Hasan 3 (7b)
    • Umar Akmal 1 (1b)

    • SCJ Broad 1-0-3-0
4.1

Broad to Umar Akmal, 1 run, Umar gets his feet moving straight away, getting into a nice position to dab a length delivery down to third man

4.2

Broad to Shahzaib Hasan, OUT, another bouncer from Broad, and this time he's got the wicket! Shahzaib tried to get across to the off side and hook to fine leg, but the ball was simply too quick for him, kissing the glove on the way through to the keeper

Shahzaib Hasan c †Davies b Broad 3 (19m 8b 0x4 0x6) SR: 37.50

In comes the captain, Shahid Afridi, as promised he's batting up the order. Good decision, the more time he spends in the middle the better for Pakistan

4.3

Broad to Shahid Afridi, no run, play-and-a-miss first ball! It was a nervous looking stroke from Afridi, he just stood at the crease - the feet hardly moving an inch - and thrust the bat out. Lucky not to edge that! And a slip is brought in - Collingwood

4.4

Broad to Shahid Afridi, no run, straighter from Broad, Afridi looks to nudge him to midwicket but can't beat the field

4.5

Broad to Shahid Afridi, 2 runs, short again from Broad, and a half-hearted pull is spooned out to deep square leg! Again, Afridi has some luck as the connection was so bad that it dropped short of the fielder on the boundary

4.6

Broad to Shahid Afridi, OUT, another one goes, and this is a big blow for Pakistan! Back of a length from Broad, and the ball is met with a wild, baseball-style swipe from Afridi. It's unclear where he was trying to hit that, but the ball takes a thick top edge and goes straight up. Morgan gets easily underneath it and he's not going to drop that! Pakistan in real trouble now

Shahid Afridi c Morgan b Broad 2 (1m 4b 0x4 0x6) SR: 50.00

5.1

Bresnan to Mohammad Hafeez, no run, attempted yorker, it slips out as a low, dipping full toss on off stump that's dug out to cover

5.2

Bresnan to Mohammad Hafeez, no run, good length outside off and a hint of away movement off the seam. Hafeez looks to guide the ball to gully but is beaten on the top edge

5.3

Bresnan to Mohammad Hafeez, no run, fuller, straighter and going the other way off the seam. Hafeez presses forward and defends with bat and pad close together

5.4

Bresnan to Mohammad Hafeez, no run, good bouncer from Bresnan, shooting over the top of off stump as Hafeez buckles his knees to get underneath it

5.5

Bresnan to Mohammad Hafeez, no run, on a length on off stump, and Hafeez opts for the safe route, defending to cover

5.6

Bresnan to Mohammad Hafeez, 1 run, Bresnan slips onto leg stump, and Hafeez nudges him behind square on the leg side to get off the mark

So, the end of the Powerplay and England are right on top. If this pitch takes turn again, then the rest of the Pakistan batting line-up could really struggle to push on from this dire position

End of over 6 (1 run) Pakistan 23/4 (RR: 3.83)

    • Mohammad Hafeez 1 (6b)
    • Umar Akmal 2 (2b)
    • TT Bresnan 3-0-6-2
    • SCJ Broad 2-0-6-2
6.1

Broad to Mohammad Hafeez, no run, Broad continues, and in very much the same mode of attack - short and fast. The batsman ducks underneath

Allan is thoroughly disgusted with what he's seen, and who can blame him? "Should Pakistan be playing any cricket at all? C'mon Shahid Afridi, how do you become captain? This is ridiculous! What a waste of time!"

6.2

Broad to Mohammad Hafeez, no run, the length is slightly fuller this time, but still by no means full. Hafeez gets into a good position and cracks the ball nicely out of the middle, but straight to extra cover

6.3

Broad to Mohammad Hafeez, 1 run, pitching middle and leg, Hafeez shuffles across and picks up a quick single on the leg side

6.4

Broad to Umar Akmal, 1 run, and Umar follows suit, glancing to fine leg

6.5

Broad to Mohammad Hafeez, 1 run, Broad re-adjusts his line, and Hafeez punches past Morgan at point for one

6.6

Broad to Umar Akmal, no run, that was almost suicidal from Umar, pushing the ball straight to Morgan and thinking about a single, Hafeez is having none of it and wisely sends him back

End of over 7 (3 runs) Pakistan 26/4 (RR: 3.71)

7.2

Yardy to Mohammad Hafeez, no run, fuller, straighter, quicker, and Hafeez drives back to the bowler

7.3

Yardy to Mohammad Hafeez, no run, this one keeps low to beat the bottom edge of Hafeez's attempted cut!

7.4

Yardy to Mohammad Hafeez, no run, full on off stump, and defended back down the track

7.5

Yardy to Mohammad Hafeez, no run, Hafeez looks for a single behind square on the off side, but again he can't beat the field!

7.6

Yardy to Mohammad Hafeez, 1 run, desperate paddle-sweep from Hafeez, he top-edges the attempt but it falls safely behind the keeper

8.3

8.4

Swann to Umar Akmal, SIX, well, Pakistan are struggling but Umar isn't! He charges out and absolutely hammers Swann straight back over his head and into the sightscreen! Big, big six

8.5

Swann to Umar Akmal, 1 run, and he follows that up with a delicate reverse-sweep. He can't quite get it away though, and they take a single as the man at 45 comes round

9.1

Yardy to Umar Akmal, no run, quick and flat through the air, speared down the leg side and Davies scoots round for a good stop. There's an appeal for a catch, but that clipped the pad

9.2

Yardy to Umar Akmal, no run, slashed away but straight to backward point

9.3

Yardy to Umar Akmal, 1 run, straighter from Yardy, and Umar nudges to midwicket for one

9.4

Yardy to Mohammad Hafeez, 1 run, short and wide, a real "hit-me" ball, and Hafeez cracks it very hard ... but straight to the cover sweeper

9.5

Yardy to Umar Akmal, no run, close to the stumping! The ball clipped Umar's pad, and went nowhere. He thought about the run but Davies leapt forward in a flash to grab the ball and break the stumps... But the third umpire confirms he's safe!

9.6

Thanks Liam. Grim stuff from Pakistan so far, let's hope Umar can restore respectability.

10.1

Swann to Mohammad Hafeez, 1 run, turned off the pads round the corner for a single to bring Umar on strike

10.2

Swann to Umar Akmal, SIX, top shot! Well played Umar, skipping down the track and depositing this straight back down the ground into the sight screen

10.3

Swann to Umar Akmal, OUT, great stuff from Swann, what a response! Cool as you like. Having watched the last disappear over his head Swann throws this up much slower, a touch wider, Umar runs at it and hacks wildly, only for the ball to spin back and crash into the stumps, Swann smiles wryly, knowing he's out-thought the youngster

10.5

Swann to Abdul Razzaq, 1 run, early single, off a leading edge down the wicket for a single

10.6

Swann to Mohammad Hafeez, no run, bit of an appeal from Swann as Hafeez stretches forward to defend and it loops off the pads to Davies

11.2

Yardy to Abdul Razzaq, 2 runs, runs here, Yardy a touch wide and it skews off the outside edge towards third man for a couple

11.3

Yardy to Abdul Razzaq, no run, nothing available here for Razzaq, fired in, cramping the batsman

11.4

Yardy to Abdul Razzaq, no run, slung in quickly again, no room for Razzaq to swing his arms

11.5

Yardy to Abdul Razzaq, no run, this is excellent control bowling, just cramping Razzaq

11.6

Yardy to Abdul Razzaq, no run, fired in even quicker, Razzak trapped on the back foot unable to do anything but poke at the ball

End of over 12 (2 runs) Pakistan 47/5 (RR: 3.91)

Swann to Mohammad Hafeez, 1 run, this is worked away for a single

12.2

Swann to Abdul Razzaq, no run, beaten on the outside edge, slightly quicker from Swann, sliding past the edge

12.3

Swann to Abdul Razzaq, no run, ooh, this is very close, Razzaq has a big heave-ho outside off, he's dragged his foot out but as Davies goes to make the stumping Razzaq gets a fraction of his boot back within the crease

So Razzaq survives! He really is Pakistan's last hope

12.4

Swann to Abdul Razzaq, 1 run, big spin for Swann, he's really giving it a rip, a touch shorter and it jags into Razzak who pokes it into the leg side suspiciously

12.5

Swann to Mohammad Hafeez, 1 run, single taken for Hafeez in calm style here, prodded towards cover

12.6

Swann to Abdul Razzaq, no run, touch slower and fuller from Swann, but with the turn around Razzaq is reluctant to tee off, so instead defends carefully

Yardy to Mohammad Hafeez, no run, Hafeez tries to give himself some room by skipping outside leg stump but the ball is on him in a flash and cramping him

13.3

Yardy to Mohammad Hafeez, FOUR, four this time! Good shot too, calmly driving through the off side, beating Collingwood at short cover

13.4

Yardy to Mohammad Hafeez, no run, tries to sweep this time, but he can't get anything on it

13.5

Yardy to Mohammad Hafeez, no run, once again Hafeez looks for some room, but he can't find it as Yardy fires it in from wide of the crease

13.6

Here's Fawad Alam, played as a specialist blocker in the 1st game, needs something more expansive here.

14.2

Swann to Abdul Razzaq, 1 run, misfield from Broad at short third man earns a glare from Swann, Razzaq opened the face to guide it towards him and Broad made a hash of it, allowing a single

14.3

15.1

Sidebottom to Umar Gul, no run, beaten outside off stump, nothing shot from Gul, just fencing aimlessly at it

Pakistan are slipping towards what could easily be their lowest total in Twenty20 internationals. Their effort on this ground a couple of days ago was already their lowest total batting first..

15.2

Sidebottom to Umar Gul, 1 run, good delivery here, back of a length around off stump, Gul swishing and getting a thick inside edge that trickles into the leg side

15.3

Sidebottom to Abdul Razzaq, no run, once again Sidebottom locates a good length and line, not pitching it up to Razzaq, and it's defended off the back foot

15.4

Sidebottom to Abdul Razzaq, 1 leg bye, Razzaq is not happy with the ball dug in short at him and his attempted pull comes off the body and rolls gently to short fine leg

15.5

16.1

Broad to Umar Gul, no run, banged in short first up, England have used the short ball a lot today, Gul crouches underneath it

16.2

Broad to Umar Gul, SIX, here's something to cheer for the Pakistan crowds, shortish again from Broad and Gul eased a pull shot over deep square for a maximum!

16.3

Broad to Umar Gul, 1 run, slightly less elegant hack at this from Gul, but effective enough to find a single down to long-on

16.4

Broad to Abdul Razzaq, 1 run, slower ball to Razzaq, who gently opens the face to give Gul back the strike. Who's the main batsman out there?

16.5

Broad to Umar Gul, 1 run, Gul standing deep in his crease waiting for the short ball, it wasn't all that short from Broad but Gul slapped away a pull shot anyway and got a single for his efforts

16.6

Broad to Abdul Razzaq, no run, big appeal from England as Broad sends one down the leg side, Razzaq flapped at it and there was a big sound, could only have been bat but given not out. Broad can't believe it, but he rarely can when decisions don't go his way

17.2

Sidebottom to Umar Gul, 1 leg bye, slower-ball bouncer, Gul runs well outside off stump to try and swing it away but he's defeated by the lack of pace and it bobbles off his body for one

Sidebottom to Umar Gul, OUT, Two in two! Another wicket for Sidebottom, who's smile is even broader now. Slower-ball bouncer once more, Gul tried to pull it away but could only manage a top edge that looped towards deep square where Bopara ran in and slid on his knees to pouch the catch

Umar Gul c Bopara b Sidebottom 16 (18m 13b 1x4 1x6) SR: 123.07

Sidebottom on a hat-trick, only Brett Lee and Jacob Oram have one in T20 International cricket...

17.6

Sidebottom to Saeed Ajmal, no run, won't get one here, fuller outside off, Ajmal pokes it to point safely

End of over 18 (5 runs) Pakistan 85/9 (RR: 4.72)

    • Saeed Ajmal 0 (1b)
    • Shoaib Akhtar 0 (0b)
    • RJ Sidebottom 3-0-22-2
    • SCJ Broad 4-0-18-2

Tim Bresnan is back to finish things off, he bowled remarkably well first up.

18.1

Bresnan to Shoaib Akhtar, no run, Shoaib backs away towards the leg side, Bresnan follows him with a shorter ball and it beats the outside edge

18.2

Bresnan to Shoaib Akhtar, FOUR, Shoaib is off and in some style too! Again giving himself some room but this time Bresnan went full and Shoaib clattered it, all along the ground, through extra cover for four

18.3

Bresnan to Shoaib Akhtar, no run, Shoaib tries to repeat the dose but Bresnan hammers it in much shorter and Shoaib can't connect

18.4

Bresnan to Shoaib Akhtar, OUT, that is that. All over. Abject effort from Pakistan ends with Shoaib backing away and missing a full toss that crashes into middle stump. England will need 90 to win

Shoaib Akhtar b Bresnan 4 (2m 4b 1x4 0x6) SR: 100.00

Nothing from Pakistan there, absolutely steamrolled by England. The visitors were an utter shambles, they looked useless against the short ball from the quicks and similarly clueless against the pair of spinners. Unless Shoaib can produce some magic with the new ball this game will be over in a flash.
