NatWest Series [Pakistan in England] - 1st ODI

England v Pakistan

England won by 24 runs

Thanks, Sahil. Shoaib Akhtar has the ball in his hands. Two slips in place for him. Here we go.

12.20pm Right then, 10 minutes to go. Ideal scenario with England batting first because Pakistan's bowling has been much more reliable than their batting and we get an early look at Irfan. The hype surrounding him is, dare I say it, enormous. With play soon to begin, who better to take over the commentary than Liam Brickhill. Welcome Liam.

12.05pm Henna Khan, who sadly left Cricinfo for pastures new a while ago, is desperate to say hello. Hello Henna.

12.00pm Toss news: Strauss flicks, Afridi, the broadly smiling Afridi, calls heads correctly and announces Pakistan will bowl first.

Confirmation that Irfan does indeed make his debut and Pakistan will line up like this:

1 Mohammad Hafeez, 2 Kamran Akmal (wk), 3 Asad Shafiq, 4 Mohammad Yousuf, 5 Umar Akmal, 6 Fawad Alam, 7 Shahid Afridi (capt) 8 Umar Gul, 9 Shoaib Akhtar, 10 Saeed Ajmal, 11 Mohammad Irfan.

Here's England's new-look team, with Davies coming in for Kieswetter, Trott replacing Pietersen and Bopara coming in for Luke Wright. Big series this for Bopara.

1 Andrew Strauss (capt), 2 Steve Davies (wk), 3 Jonathan Trott, 4 Paul Collingwood, 5 Eoin Morgan, 6 Ravi Bopara, 7 Tim Bresnan, 8 Michael Yardy, 9 Graeme Swann, 10 Stuart Broad, 11 James Anderson.

Just to make clear the details are like this: 41 overs a side, 8 overs of powerplay, 1 bowler 9 overs 4 bowlers 8 overs.

11.55pm Ed Craig, of Wisden Cricketer fame, is at the match for his stag do and has asked for a mention. So here you go, Ed, best wishes and all. Don't say we never do anything for you. The question is, what's his fancy dress outfit?

11.50pm "Happy 15th birthday to Sharoun (see 11.10am update) but also a happy 24th birthday to Eoin Morgan!" says Conor. Indeed, the star man is 24 today.

11.40am Right, we have an update! Gnasher tells us it shall be a 12.30pm start and 41 overs a side. That should mean we'll have the toss at midday. For those of you asking all those are local times.

11.20am Gnasher has settled the Irfan height debate: " Watching Mohammad Irfan warm-up...confirmation that he is very tall. Hope the sightscreens are big enough." Also "The final cover has been removed and just the rolled versions on the pitch now."

11.15am Just to let you know, there is still no news about start times. The sun is out, the players are warming up but when we know more, so will you.

11.10am "It's my 15th birthday today, and I am Pakistani, hopefully Pakistan will actually win for once, I'll take it as a birthday present." Happy Birthday Sharoun!

11.05am Here are a couple of fairly robust rebuttals to Warren, firstly from Mark: "Warren clearly has a short memory. Last year's ODI at Chester-le-Street was played in glorious sunshine in late September, meanwhile, down South, it was an utterly miserable day. No play would have been possible before mid-afternoon in Kent (where I was). In any event, the blue sky is appearing here in Newcastle and the forecast for the rest of the day up here is good." And then from James "The north-east is one of the driest part of the UK, with just over 50mm of rain on average in September. Look!"

10.50am Gnasher has some happy news from the ground. "Players are starting some warm-ups which is a promising sign, the umpires are having another inspection but still some covers to come off. It's been a long job."

I wonder if that will cheer up Warren. Doubt it: "I don't know why the ECB bothers to schedule matches in the north of England in September. How often are these matches washed out or curtailed by rain?"

10.20am Gnasher has breaking news. " 11am inspection or when all the covers are removed, whichever is the sooner." So there you go, sit tight for another 40 minutes and we could have better news. The delay does, at least, give you a chance to listen to our Switch Hit Podcast.

10.00am The pictures, it must be said, don't look too pretty. The covers are sopping and without any official news as yet, pretty safe to say we won't start on time. Luckily you can amuse yourselves with a variety things including our Facebook page and our Twitter wickets alerts.

9.30am Good morning one and all and Eid Mubarak to all those celebrating! Welcome to the first of five, yes five, ODIs between England and Pakistan. Too much cricket? Of course not. I'm Sahil Dutta, and will be joined by Liam Brickhill and none other than Andrew Miller today.

The shadow cast over this series could not be more any foreboding and, as we saw in the two Twenty20 games, Pakistan are in desperate need of inspiration to breathe life into the end of the summer. Being Pakistan, inspiration is only as far as despair, and it takes a cold sort not to smile at the prospect of the giant (6"10? 7"1? - no one knows his exact height, it seems), ex-pipe-factory working left-arm paceman Mohammad Irfan making his international debut.

We've about 40 minutes until the start, and will keep you abreast of developments with haste. Huzzah, first shout of the day from Andrew Gnasher McGlashan, who is at Chester-le-Street, and his opening gambit isn't the cheeriest: "There was heavy rain this morning but it's clearing up now...groundstaff in action. Not sure about an on-time start, there's still a lot of water on the covers." Could be worse I guess, could be worse. More from Gnasher and there's even some talk of sunshine. "Sun coming out now...just need these covers off."

0.1

Shoaib Akhtar to Strauss, 1 wide, ooh, not the best start by any means. A loosener from Shoaib, and it's hurled well wide of off stump - wide enough to be called wide by the umpire

0.1

Shoaib Akhtar to Strauss, no run, but he recovers quickly, and the second ball - though still low on pace - is well-directed just outside off. Left alone by Strauss

0.2

Shoaib Akhtar to Strauss, no run, straighter still, but a touch shorter and Strauss just stays deep in the crease and nudges carefully into the leg side

0.3

Shoaib Akhtar to Strauss, no run, width offered outside off, and the ball's met with a crunching shot off the back foot ... but Afridi at cover leads by example, moving quickly to his left to cut it off. Saved four runs

0.4

Shoaib Akhtar to Strauss, no run, quickest ball of the over so far, and it's fired full on off stump. Defended back down the track by Strauss

0.5

Shoaib Akhtar to Strauss, no run, good line and length and decent pace once again - Shoaib's starting to loosen now!

0.6

Shoaib Akhtar to Strauss, no run, landing on middle and leg, Strauss looks to clip through midwicket but finds the fielder in the circle. After a fairly wild start, that's actually turned out to be a good, steady opening over from Shoaib

End of over 1 (1 run) England 1/0 (RR: 1.00)
AJ Strauss    0* (6b)      Shoaib Akhtar    1-0-1-0
SM Davies    0* (0b)

Right, we're going to be treated to our first look at Mohammad Irfan bowling live.

1.1

Mohammad Irfan to Davies, 3 runs, fired in full outside off, a touch of wobble through the air and decent pace too - fast-medium - but Davies meets the ball with a flashing square drive that is just about cut off by a sliding Umar Gul on the boundary

1.2

Mohammad Irfan to Strauss, no run, good length, outside off and left alone by Strauss. Left on length

1.3

Mohammad Irfan to Strauss, FOUR, too full, right up to Strauss on off stump and he slapped it away off the middle through the covers

1.4

Mohammad Irfan to Strauss, no run, Irfan pulls the length back, Strauss rocks back and tries a whipped pull through midwicket, but the ball takes the bottom edge and goes nowhere

1.5

Mohammad Irfan to Strauss, FOUR, a nervous, erratic first over from Irfan, this was short and wide outside off and Strauss gleefully accepts that gift, thrashing him past point

1.6

Mohammad Irfan to Strauss, FOUR, four more! A baptism of fire for Irfan, as Strauss steps back and rifles a pull to midwicket. Didn't bother keeping that down. 15 off the over!

End of over 2 (15 runs) England 16/0 (RR: 8.00)
AJ Strauss    12* (11b 3x4)      Mohammad Irfan    1-0-15-0
SM Davies    3* (1b)      Shoaib Akhtar    1-0-1-0

2.1

Shoaib Akhtar to Davies, no run, beaten outside off! Davies props half forward in defence and is beaten by the slanting angle and a hint of movement away off the seam

2.2

Shoaib Akhtar to Davies, no run, back of a length on middle, Davies is pushed back in his crease as he defends back down the track

2.3

Shoaib Akhtar to Davies, no run, pace and lift off a length outside off, and Davies is beaten once again! That took off from a length and beat the outside edge of the bat by a good few inches as Davies tried to drive on the up through cover

2.4

Shoaib Akhtar to Davies, no run, full and straight, Davies gets nicely in line to defend. Solid-looking stroke, but he has looked slightly tentative outside off

2.5

Shoaib Akhtar to Davies, no run, good length, and pitching on about middle and off. Davies stays back and pushes firmly into the covers

2.6

Shoaib Akhtar to Davies, no run, effort ball from Shoaib, the quickest he's bowled today, and he's beaten the outside edge of Davies' bat for the third time! Shoaib showing all his experience to keep things tight from his end, but no luck

End of over 3 (maiden) England 16/0 (RR: 5.33)
SM Davies    3* (7b)      Shoaib Akhtar    2-1-1-0
AJ Strauss    12* (11b 3x4)      Mohammad Irfan    1-0-15-0

After that nervous debut over for Irfan, he's been replaced by Umar Gul

3.1

Umar Gul to Strauss, no run, good start, nice and full around off stump. Strauss tries to drive down the ground, the ball takes the inside half of the bat and rolls back to the bowler

3.2

Umar Gul to Strauss, no run, that's something you don't see too often - Gul sends one down short and wide but Strauss is beaten on the outside edge as he aims a flashing cut into the off side

3.3

Umar Gul to Strauss, 1 run, Gul slips onto leg stump, and Strauss clips neatly down to Shoaib at fine leg

3.4

Umar Gul to Davies, FOUR, superb timing from Davies! Not trying to hit the ball too hard at all, just pure timing as he sends the ball racing to the cover point boundary after nothing more than a firm push

3.5

Umar Gul to Davies, no run, a hint of width offered outside off, and chopped to point

" I know it was an expensive start from Irfan, but not sure that's the way to boost his confidence," says Gnasher.

3.6

Umar Gul to Davies, no run, Davies is beaten by Gul now! Perfect line and length outside off, and some seam movement towards the slips, lucky not to edge that

End of over 4 (5 runs) England 21/0 (RR: 5.25)
SM Davies    7* (10b 1x4)      Umar Gul    1-0-5-0
AJ Strauss    13* (14b 3x4)      Shoaib Akhtar    2-1-1-0

4.1

Shoaib Akhtar to Strauss, 2 runs, just short of a good length on off stump, and Strauss waits deep in the crease - getting nicely back and across - and punches through cover

4.2

Shoaib Akhtar to Strauss, no run, a touch straighter, this time the shot isn't on and Strauss defends softly to extra cover

4.3

Shoaib Akhtar to Strauss, no run, tight line on middle and off, and Strauss defends towards point

4.4

Shoaib Akhtar to Strauss, no run, this is turning into another steady over from Shoaib, keeping the ball on or around off stump as Strauss defends to cover

4.5

Shoaib Akhtar to Strauss, no run, Shoaib sends this one down just outside off but Strauss seizes on the width immediately, slashing behind point - but Fawad Alam is positioned there and a good piece of fielding from him saves runs

4.6

Shoaib Akhtar to Strauss, 1 run, slight over-correction from Shoaib as this one lands on leg stump, Strauss tucks towards cover and has to hurry as a sharp single is taken. The shy is wide of the stumps, however

End of over 5 (3 runs) England 24/0 (RR: 4.80)
AJ Strauss    16* (20b 3x4)      Shoaib Akhtar    3-1-4-0
SM Davies    7* (10b 1x4)      Umar Gul    1-0-5-0

5.1

Umar Gul to Strauss, no run, full on off stump, drilled back to the bowler who collects in his follow-through

Just the one slip in for Gul, third man and fine leg are the men outside the circle

5.2

Umar Gul to Strauss, SIX, in the slot, and that's been absolutely hammered over midwicket! The ball wasn't all that short, but it was in Strauss's hitting arc and he picked up the length early. Again, not bothering to keep the shot down, and that's flown over the boundary for six!

Shoaib comes up to short fine leg now, and a man is put out on the midwicket boundary

5.3

Umar Gul to Strauss, 3 runs, pulled again, infront of square this time! But not nearly as well timed, a fairly clunky sound off the bat and Irfan lopes giraffe-like after the ball to cut it off before the rope

5.4

Umar Gul to Davies, FOUR, Davies follows suit, stepping outside leg stump and carving a full ball up and over cover! Gave himself a lot of room and thrashed it deliberately in the air

5.5

Umar Gul to Davies, FOUR, scooped pull over short fine leg! With the fielder in, that was really the wrong length to bowl. It was outside leg too, and Davies simply had to lift it over the fielder to pick up runs

5.6

Umar Gul to Davies, no run, shout for lbw as Gul pushes this fuller and straighter, but the umpire's not interested. That looked too high on first viewing, but replays suggest it may just have clipped the top of middle

"It's a game of two ends so far," suggest Gnasher, and he's right. England are 41 for 0, and Shoaib's only given away four of those runs

End of over 6 (17 runs) England 41/0 (RR: 6.83)
SM Davies    15* (13b 3x4)      Umar Gul    2-0-22-0
AJ Strauss    25* (23b 3x4 1x6)      Shoaib Akhtar    3-1-4-0

6.1

Shoaib Akhtar to Strauss, no run, back of a length on middle and leg and rushing onto to Strauss, hurrying his clip to leg

6.2

Shoaib Akhtar to Strauss, no run, same line, same length and the result is identical too as Strauss flicks to midwicket but straight to the fielder

6.3

Shoaib Akhtar to Strauss, no run, top-class bowling from Shoaib, and it's backed up by a first-class ear-bashing too! Strauss tried to move across to the off side to mess with his line, but Shoaib re-adjusted and beat the outside edge of his poke! Shoaib wandered down after his follow-through to say hello...

6.4

Shoaib Akhtar to Strauss, 2 runs, hooked in the air down to fine leg! Strauss didn't know too much about that, it was short and rising and he completely took his eyes off it, turning his head away as he played the shot. But the ball drops safely

6.5

Shoaib Akhtar to Strauss, no run, exemplary bowling from the veteran! Again he beats the outside edge of Strauss's bat as he finds the perfect line outside off.

6.6

Shoaib Akhtar to Strauss, 1 run, just too straight to finish, and Strauss pushes the ball into space on the leg side for a quick single

Stop what you're doing. We have some incredibly exciting news. For UK users, ESPN is free-to-air this weekend. Between today and the early hours of Monday morning the channel is unscrambled, so you can watch a variety of sports, including live coverage of the Aviva Premiership (that's rugby, to you and me). It can be found on Sky channels 417 and 442 (HD) and Virgin media 529 and 530. Click here for more information.

End of over 7 (3 runs) England 44/0 (RR: 6.28)
AJ Strauss    28* (29b 3x4 1x6)      Shoaib Akhtar    4-1-7-0
SM Davies    15* (13b 3x4)      Umar Gul    2-0-22-0

Now, this is interesting. Shahid Afridi has brought Mohammad Hafeez on to bowl his darted offspinners. The back-up seamers haven't given Shoaib much support, but we're still in the Powerplay overs so bringing a spinner on is a brave move

7.1

Mohammad Hafeez to Strauss, 1 run, full, fast and straight. Strauss digs it out into the covers and they take a quick single

7.2

Mohammad Hafeez to Davies, no run, slightly slower through the air, and landing on leg stump from over the wicket. Davies is hit on the pad as he tries to flick to leg

7.3

Mohammad Hafeez to Davies, FOUR, lovely, controlled hit down the ground! Davies stepped out of his crease, but kept his head down and led with the top hand to lift that back over the bowler's head

7.4

Mohammad Hafeez to Davies, no run, again Davies charges down, this time drilling the ball along the ground but Hafeez sticks a boot out to cut it off

7.5

Mohammad Hafeez to Davies, 2 runs, chipped up and over wide mid-on, the ball plugs in the wet outfield. That's the fifty partnership

7.6

Mohammad Hafeez to Davies, no run, dropped by Afridi at short extra cover! That was hit really hard though, he stuck his hands up infront of his face to stop the missile but couldn't hold on. And that's stinging now... but he's fine

End of over 8 (7 runs) England 51/0 (RR: 6.37)
SM Davies    21* (18b 4x4)      Mohammad Hafeez    1-0-7-0
AJ Strauss    29* (30b 3x4 1x6)      Shoaib Akhtar    4-1-7-0

Afridi is getting some treatment on his hand - an ice-pack and some magic spray - and he's also indicated that he'll take the Powerplay straight away. Remember, the overs have been reduced so the first Powerplay was eight overs, with four each for the batting and bowling sides thereafter. Shoaib will continue

8.1

Shoaib Akhtar to Strauss, no run, full on off stump, tapped back to the bowler

8.2

Shoaib Akhtar to Strauss, no run, well, Shoaib's had no luck today! For the umpteenth time he fires one down on the perfect line to beat the outside edge of the bat

8.3

Shoaib Akhtar to Strauss, 2 runs, landing on leg stump, and Strauss clips him away through midwicket for a couple

8.4

Shoaib Akhtar to Strauss, no run, full of length, landing outside off and going further with the angle from over the wicket. Strauss leans forward and drives hard into the covers, but Afridi is there to cut it off

8.5

Shoaib Akhtar to Strauss, no run, nice and tight, right on middle and leg and Strauss can only defend back to the bowler. Nice straight bat though, presenting the full face of the blade and getting right behind it

8.6

Shoaib Akhtar to Strauss, no run, Shoaib raises his eyes to the heavens and throws his hands up as he beats the outside edge yet again!

End of over 9 (2 runs) England 53/0 (RR: 5.88)
AJ Strauss    31* (36b 3x4 1x6)      Shoaib Akhtar    5-1-9-0
SM Davies    21* (18b 4x4)      Mohammad Hafeez    1-0-7-0

Another change as Afridi looks for someone to support Shoaib. Saeed Ajmal will have a go now, with three men out at long leg, midwicket and long off

9.1

Saeed Ajmal to Davies, no run, beaten outside off on the cut, and the ball thumps into Kamran's gloves

9.2

Saeed Ajmal to Davies, 1 run, leg-stump line, and Davies flicks him behind square on the leg side for one

One wide slip in for Ajmal

9.3

Saeed Ajmal to Strauss, no run, quick through the air, the ball still grips and spins a touch but Strauss is nicely behind it again in defence

9.4

Saeed Ajmal to Strauss, SIX, down the track, and thwacked handsomely over wide long-on! Great hit from Strauss, confident strokeplay

9.5

Saeed Ajmal to Strauss, 1 run, full, driven down to the man at long-off

9.6

Saeed Ajmal to Davies, 2 runs, Davies uses his feet now, coming down the track and playing a lofted inside-out drive over cover. The ball plugs in the outfield, so no boundary, but a good shot nonetheless

And with that, I'm going to hand over to Sahil

End of over 10 (10 runs) England 63/0 (RR: 6.30)
SM Davies    24* (21b 4x4)      Saeed Ajmal    1-0-10-0
AJ Strauss    38* (39b 3x4 2x6)      Shoaib Akhtar    5-1-9-0

Thanks Liam. Afridi has turned to big Mohammad Irfan again after Shoaib's excellent, classy opening spell.

10.1

Mohammad Irfan to Strauss, no run, nervy start again from Irfan, floating up a full-toss that Strauss mis-times back to him

10.2

Mohammad Irfan to Strauss, no run, flash and a miss! Strauss really giving everything at it outside off stump, losing his shape and control, and the ball whistles past

10.3

Mohammad Irfan to Strauss, no run, better delivery here, on a length, Strauss is back and pushing to short midwicket

10.4

Mohammad Irfan to Strauss, 3 runs, banged in a touch short, Strauss looks to wheel away a pull but it comes off the gloves down past the short fine leg for three

10.5

Mohammad Irfan to Davies, 1 run, touch lazy this from Davies, short ball that he lifts airily towards deep point, one bounce to the fielder

10.6

Mohammad Irfan to Strauss, no run, flash and a miss again outside off stump, the England batsmen are really trying to target the debutant

End of over 11 (4 runs) England 67/0 (RR: 6.09)
AJ Strauss    41* (44b 3x4 2x6)      Mohammad Irfan    2-0-19-0
SM Davies    25* (22b 4x4)      Saeed Ajmal    1-0-10-0

11.1

Saeed Ajmal to Davies, FOUR, shot! Really good from Davies, getting deep into his crease and outside leg stump, before cutting with complete control through point for four

11.2

Saeed Ajmal to Davies, FOUR, and again! Not quite as well played as the last but Davies picks a gap in front of cover after giving himself room outside leg

11.3

Saeed Ajmal to Davies, no run, doosra here, not sure Davies read it, and it thuds into the pads

11.4

Saeed Ajmal to Davies, 3 runs, excellent timing from Davies, he really doesn't bully the ball, just timing it through the leg side for three more

11.5

Saeed Ajmal to Strauss, OUT, Ajmal strikes! Pakistan really needed that and Strauss has gone! Slightly quicker from Ajmal, Strauss was trying to maul a sweep shot over deep square but missed and the ball clipped leg stump. Big wicket that, Strauss was playing beautifully

AJ Strauss b Saeed Ajmal 41 (53m 45b 3x4 2x6) SR: 91.11

So, Strauss falls but yet again he's been England's main aggressor at the top of the innings. Though England's captain has insisted in the past that he's not a six-hitter there's been a definite transformation in his limited-overs batting of late - he's hit half of his career sixes this year

11.6

Saeed Ajmal to Trott, no run, slip in place for Ajmal and he almost has him in business straight away, landing a perfect doosra that Trott gropes at and misses

End of over 12 (11 runs) England 78/1 (RR: 6.50)
IJL Trott    0* (1b)      Saeed Ajmal    2-0-21-1
SM Davies    36* (26b 6x4)      Mohammad Irfan    2-0-19-0

12.1

Mohammad Irfan to Davies, no run, Irfan will be happy that Strauss has departed and he celebrates by arrowing this down the leg side

12.2

Mohammad Irfan to Davies, 2 runs, little bit short from Irfan, he hasn't quite found the right length as yet, Davies pulls a touch airily, but no harm done as it bobbles out to deep midwicket

12.3

Mohammad Irfan to Davies, 2 runs, good work from Asad on the cover boundary, scampering around and sliding to save Davies' sweetly timed cut shot

12.4

Mohammad Irfan to Davies, FOUR, Davies is really motoring here, and this is an odd shot, looked like he wanted to pull, found the ball wasn't quite there for it and ended up short-arm jabbing it perfectly through mid-on for four

12.5

Mohammad Irfan to Davies, no run, good response from Irfan! Yorker that Davies squeezes out to point

12.6

Mohammad Irfan to Davies, no run, good finish to the over, on a length outside off stump and Davies leaves alone

End of over 13 (8 runs) England 86/1 (RR: 6.61)
SM Davies    44* (32b 7x4)      Mohammad Irfan    3-0-27-0
IJL Trott    0* (1b)      Saeed Ajmal    2-0-21-1

Slip in place, Ajmal screaming out orders to his fielders. He's up for this now!

13.1

Saeed Ajmal to Trott, no run, good ball, just dipping a bit on Trott, who clips to midwicket

13.2

Saeed Ajmal to Trott, 1 run, with a minimum of fuss Trott shoves this down the ground for a single

13.3

Saeed Ajmal to Davies, no run, Davies looking to glide this behind square but gets too full a face on it

13.4

Saeed Ajmal to Davies, 1 run, big shot attempted by Davies here, skipping down the wicket and trying to drag this over midwicket, didn't time it at all and it ran away off an inside edge

13.5

Saeed Ajmal to Trott, no run, nothing for Trott here, Ajmal finding an ideal length and line

13.6

Saeed Ajmal to Trott, no run, doosra to finish, Trott securely forward and defending to cover

End of over 14 (2 runs) England 88/1 (RR: 6.28)
IJL Trott    1* (5b)      Saeed Ajmal    3-0-23-1
SM Davies    45* (34b 7x4)      Mohammad Irfan    3-0-27-0

Well, Afridi has had enough of Irfan again and Umar Gul is back.

14.1

Umar Gul to Davies, 1 run, decent start to the new spell, forcing Davies to defend in a hurry, but good running means he can pick up a single

High praise indeed from Nadeem Khan: "Davies gives an impression of a batting style of Adam Gilchrist, specially when he is driving. A rare style.

14.2

Umar Gul to Trott, 1 run, Trott defends off the back foot and, like Davies, scampers a single to reward his efforts

14.3

Umar Gul to Davies, no run, this looks like a good pitch for batting, very true, decent carry and no lateral movement

14.4

Umar Gul to Davies, FOUR, after three good balls Gul slips this down the leg side and Davies fiddles it to the fine leg boundary to bring up an excellent maiden half-century from just 37 balls

14.5

Umar Gul to Davies, FOUR, don't bowl there, really don't bowl there! Very short and a touch wide outside outside off, Davies is deep in his crease and times a cut shot dreamily to the point boundary, beating a desperate flay from the fielder on the ropes

14.6

Umar Gul to Davies, no run, after all that excitement Gul finds a decent length and line again and Davies quietly defends

End of over 15 (10 runs) England 98/1 (RR: 6.53)
SM Davies    54* (39b 9x4)      Umar Gul    3-0-32-0
IJL Trott    2* (6b)      Saeed Ajmal    3-0-23-1

Hafeez back into the attack now, poor Afridi can't find a combination to keep England quiet.

15.1

Mohammad Hafeez to Trott, 1 run, touch short to begin the new spell, Trott chops it to deep point, collects a single to give Davies back the strike

15.2

Mohammad Hafeez to Davies, 1 run, 100 up for England, and they get there with a sweetly-timed cut shot

15.3

Mohammad Hafeez to Trott, no run, straighter and Trott blocks back to the bowler

15.4

Mohammad Hafeez to Trott, 1 run, with the field set deep Trott is only too happy to deflect the ball away for a single

15.5

Mohammad Hafeez to Davies, no run, little bit loose from Davies here, trying to a cut a delivery that was too full for the shot and he can only bottom edge it

15.6

Mohammad Hafeez to Davies, no run, again Davies gets a bottom edge, this time trying to pull a length ball, he admonishes himself with a yelp, and rightly so

End of over 16 (3 runs) England 101/1 (RR: 6.31)
SM Davies    55* (42b 9x4)      Mohammad Hafeez    2-0-10-0
IJL Trott    4* (9b)      Umar Gul    3-0-32-0

Afridi has turned to the one man he can trust - himself.

16.1

Thanks, Sahil. England are cruising towards a huge total here

20.4

Shahid Afridi to Davies, FOUR, finess off the bat of Davies! A hint of width outside off, he didn't try to hit it hard, just placed the cut out to backward point

20.5

Shahid Afridi to Davies, 1 run, nudged into the leg side, and a quick single rotates the strike

21.3

Mohammad Hafeez to Trott, 1 run, speared in flat and fast on off stump, drilled down to long-off

21.4

Mohammad Hafeez to Davies, FOUR, Davies is looking totally unflustered here, picking the boundaries almost at will now. He comes down the track and lifts the ball inside-out over cover, splitting the field between long off and deep cover perfectly to pick up four more

21.5

Mohammad Hafeez to Davies, 1 run, flapped down the ground, this was a slightly awkward looking shot as he was done in the flight somewhat, but took hit bottom hand off the bat

Shahid Afridi to Trott, 1 run, floated up outside off, Afridi finds some drift in through the air and a hint of turn, but not enough to trouble Trott as he eases a drive out to deep cover

22.2

Shahid Afridi to Davies, 1 run, drop-and-run into the covers from Davies

22.3

Shahid Afridi to Trott, 1 run, full on leg stump, Trott clips in the air but into acres of space on the leg side

22.4

Shahid Afridi to Davies, 2 runs, uppish from Davies this time as he flashes outside off, but this is a really defensive-looking field now and there's no-one close to the bat to catch that

22.5

Shahid Afridi to Davies, 1 run, yet another quick single, these two are rotating the strike so well, no pressure building up at all

22.6

Shahid Afridi to Trott, 1 run, guided down towards gully, and they're off for yet another quick single

Right, there will be something of a change as Irfan comes back into the attack

23.1

Mohammad Irfan to Trott, no run, loosener from him, no real pace at all, but he strikes Trott on the pad and launches an emotive appeal... pitching well outside leg though, not given

23.2

Mohammad Irfan to Trott, 1 run, full again on leg stump, Trott steps across to the off side and glances out to square leg

That's England's 150, and it's all been too easy!

23.3

Mohammad Irfan to Davies, 1 run, well-bowled! That's not the first time Irfan has shown us his yorker, and he seems to have a good one. Davies is well in though, and digs it out easily to gully

23.4

Mohammad Irfan to Trott, no run, full outside off, Trott aims a well-timed drive to mid-off but a tumbling Asad Shafiq does well to cut that off

23.5

Mohammad Irfan to Trott, 1 run, this is not all that short on leg stump but rises up sharply off a length, it looked as though he may have been holding that across the seam for extra bounce. Trott gets right across to off and hooks down to fine leg

23.6

Mohammad Irfan to Davies, no run, full-toss on off stump, taking Davies by surprise as he bunts to point. That wasn't too far from being called a no-ball for the height

And with that the players take drinks. "England have a history of making poor use of the batting powerplay by taking it to late. They should be aggressive and take it now while the momentum is firmly with them," suggests Steve

Saeed Ajmal to Trott, no run, offspinner from Ajmal, turning in to strike Trott on the pad as he shapes to glance to leg. Heading well down the leg side though

24.2

Saeed Ajmal to Trott, 1 run, again the offspinner, taking the inside half of the bat and trickling into the leg side for one

24.3

Saeed Ajmal to Davies, OUT, edged, and gone! Davies falls three ball after the drinks break for 87. More bounce than turn for Ajmal, but he's got the ball to do enough to take the top edge of Davies' cut and land safely in Kamran's gloves. That's just what Pakistan needed. They should attack now that the partnership's been broken

Slip in place for Collingwood

24.4

Saeed Ajmal to Collingwood, no run, pushed softly into the leg side

24.5

Saeed Ajmal to Collingwood, no run, fuller, again Collingwood clips to leg and that man at square leg has more work to do

24.6

Saeed Ajmal to Collingwood, no run, just short of a caught-and-bowled! That may have been the doosra from Ajmal, not picked by Collingwood as he tried to force down the ground. It went in the air and Ajmal did really well, leaping to his left, but couldn't quite get his fingers underneath it. Not a dropped chance though, just short

25.1

Mohammad Irfan to Trott, 1 run, full and wide, going further with the angle across the right-hander, and slapped out to deep cover

25.2

Mohammad Irfan to Collingwood, no run, ungainly looking pull from Collingwood to a back of a length delivery from Irfan. He just stood at the crease and swung at it, and the ball rolled harmlessly to mid-on

25.3

Mohammad Irfan to Collingwood, 1 run, fuller on middle and leg, nudged into the leg side

25.4

Mohammad Irfan to Trott, 1 run, good shot from Trott, waiting in the crease and playing it late to get the ball down to third man for one

25.5

Mohammad Irfan to Collingwood, 1 run, pushed through the gap at cover, and they amble through for one more

25.6

Mohammad Irfan to Trott, 1 run, half-volley, nicely-driven down to long-off. They think about the second, but wisely decide against it

End of over 26 (5 runs) England 158/2 (RR: 6.07)

26.1

Saeed Ajmal to Trott, no run, really tossed up very slow outside off, Trott doesn't take the bait and drives watchfully back to the bowler

26.2

Saeed Ajmal to Trott, no run, flicked to short fine leg, and a great, diving stop from Fawad Alam stops the single

26.3

Saeed Ajmal to Trott, no run, appeal for a catch behind! Trott tried the late cut but was beaten, Ajmal didn't go up straight away but Kamran was convinced. Umpire says no though, and replays seem to suggest there was nothing on it

26.4

Saeed Ajmal to Trott, no run, pushed defensively down the track

26.5

Saeed Ajmal to Trott, 1 run, now that will be one, as Trott plays the ball into space and Collingwood calls him through

Slip comes back in for Collingwood

26.6

Saeed Ajmal to Collingwood, no run, Collingwood, who still doesn't seem to be picking Ajmal, watches this off the pitch and tentatively defends back down the track

27.1

Mohammad Irfan to Trott, 1 run, length delivery, whipped into the leg-side for one

27.2

Mohammad Irfan to Collingwood, 1 run, high full-toss on off stump, but Collingwood can't do much with it

27.3

Mohammad Irfan to Trott, no run, almost a first wicket for Irfan! Trott came down the track but ended up yorking himself, and the ball shot past off stump...

Now, this doesn't look good. Irfan is down and he's stretching his left leg. The physio is out now too, this looks like cramps. Also, we've just seen a snicko replay and it seemed to suggest that there was a touch on that shout for caught behind in Ajmal's last over, so Trott's lucky to be there still.

If it is just cramp that's troubling Irfan they must be pretty bad, as he's yet to get up again. Well, he's up now, but sadly he's being escorted off the field by the team physio. That's a shame. He's gesturing towards his calf, this may be more than cramp.

27.5

Shahid Afridi to Trott, no run, full and fast on leg stump, cries of "catch it!" as the leading edge goes into the covers, but falls safely

England have called for their Powerplay early, and that's a good move - although whether Trott and Collingwood are the right two to take advantage of it is up to debate! They've got wickets in hand though, and time to recover if anything goes wrong. Umar Gul will bowl the first over of the Powerplay.

28.1

Umar Gul to Trott, 1 run, full on off stump, not quite the yorker but close to it. Dug out, it bounces up and over the bowler and goes down the ground

28.2

Umar Gul to Collingwood, FOUR, ha! Well, I take it back, maybe Collingwood is the man for the job! He comes down the ground as Gul sends down a length delivery on middle stump, gettng nicely underneath it and crashing it to wide long-on for four

28.3

Umar Gul to Collingwood, 1 run, punchy drive into the covers, Yousuf sprints round to stop it but there's no cutting off the run

28.4

Umar Gul to Trott, 1 run, Trott backs away to leg but Gul fires in a very full delivery on leg stump and all the batsman can do is dig it out down the ground

28.5

Umar Gul to Collingwood, SIX, Gul is bowling well to Trott, very full and close to the batsman, but is just dishing out length deliveries to Collingwood and this one has been thumped over long-on for a big six! He's taken out a spectator in the crowd, but the man is up and bowing to the people in the stands behind him and smiling so he must be fine!

28.6

Umar Gul to Collingwood, no run, better delivery, a slower ball and Collingwood can't get that away

29.1

Saeed Ajmal to Trott, 2 runs, Ajmal comes round the wicket, Trott whips him infront of midwicket and deep midwicket is very deep so they can get back for two

29.2

Saeed Ajmal to Trott, 1 wide, speared down the leg side, and quickly called by the umpire

29.2

Saeed Ajmal to Trott, 1 run, landing on leg stump, Trott pushes the ball towards wide mid-on and they steal a quick single

29.3

Saeed Ajmal to Collingwood, no run, appeal for lbw as Collingwood is down on bent knee and slog-sweeping, but that was very optimistic as it pitched about a foot outside leg

29.4

Saeed Ajmal to Collingwood, no run, doosra has the beating of Collingwood, not picked as he tries to force through the covers and the ball zips past the outside edge

29.5

Saeed Ajmal to Collingwood, OUT, slog-swept again, but this time it's straight into the hands of Fawad Alam at long leg! The Powerplay brings a wicket, and Collingwood's gone for a quickfire 14. Ajmal strikes again!

Shahid Afridi to Bopara, 1 leg bye, fired in full, yorker length and jabbed away to long-on for one

38.2

Shahid Afridi to Trott, 1 run, full toss this time, Trott slaps it to deep cover

38.3

38.4

Shahid Afridi to Bopara, 1 run, Bopara again looking for something expansive, a sweep this time, but it thuds off the body for a single

38.5

Shahid Afridi to Trott, no run, Trott aims a down-with-da-kidz reverse-sweep and duly misses, good bowling from Afridi

38.6

Shahid Afridi to Trott, no run, good over finishes with a very quick quicker ball that Trott misses

End of over 39 (3 runs) England 250/4 (RR: 6.41)
IJL Trott    69* (77b 4x4)      Shahid Afridi    7.3-0-52-1

39.2

Saeed Ajmal to Bopara, 1 run, single taken this time, Bopara unable to find anything bigger, top bowling from Ajmal

39.3

Saeed Ajmal to Trott, OUT, gone! Ajmal strikes again and Trott departs for another excellent innings, not glamorous but mighty effective. In the end he tried to hack a sweep shot away but got an inside-edge that cannoned into his stumps

IJL Trott b Saeed Ajmal 69 (106m 78b 4x4 0x6) SR: 88.46

Since his recall for the Ashes last summer, Trott's record in home internationals is formidable

39.4

Saeed Ajmal to Bresnan, 1 run, Bresnan bunts his first ball for a single to bring Bopara back on strike

39.5

Saeed Ajmal to Bopara, 1 run, OUT, another goes! Run out this time, top work from Umar! Bopara fiddled it into the leg side and set off for a couple, but Umar's direct hit in from the midwicket boundary had Bresnan just short!

TT Bresnan run out 1 (1m 1b 0x4 0x6) SR: 100.00

39.6

Saeed Ajmal to Bopara, SIX, Bopara finishes the over in style! That's why he was so keen to come back for two! Clearly his front leg and cleanly strikes this miles over the mid-on boundary, great shot

End of over 40 (11 runs) England 261/6 (RR: 6.52)
RS Bopara    26* (23b 2x6)      Saeed Ajmal    8-0-58-4
MH Yardy    0* (0b)      Shahid Afridi    7.3-0-52-1

Umar Gul will have the final over, can he finish better than he's done all day.

40.1

Umar Gul to Yardy, 1 leg bye, interesting shot from Yardy, getting down on one knee and looking to dink it over his head, it comes off the toe and runs away for a single to bring Bopara back on strike

40.2

Umar Gul to Bopara, 1 run, dropped by Kamran, it went very quickly to him off Bopara's flashing outside edge, but Kamran could not hold on

40.3

Umar Gul to Yardy, 1 run, Yardy manages to find another single, bunting to midwicket

40.4

Umar Gul to Bopara, 2 runs, Bopara walks miles outside off stump but Gul follows him so in the end it's an inelegant mow down the ground for a couple

40.5

Umar Gul to Bopara, SIX, have that! Bopara walks outside off stump again but this time Gul feeds him a delivery on his legs, Bopara clips it handsomely, sending it miles over the deep square leg boundary

40.6

Umar Gul to Bopara, 2 byes, two scampered through to finish a very good effort from England

That flourish from Bopara has lifted England to a very imposing total. Led by Strauss and Davies at the top of the order England's batsmen were unrelenting with their aggression. Davies was particularly impressive, timing the ball sweetly to reach 87 from 67 deliveries, Trott was as dependable as ever and, after a hesitant start, Bopara ensured a late charge to carry England into the break.

Andrew McGlashan will have more in his bulletin soon, so make sure you check that out.
