NatWest Series [Pakistan in England] - 2nd ODI

England v Pakistan

England won by 4 wickets (with 3 balls remaining)

10.10am So we're just about ready for the action here. Another weary rendition of 'Jerusalem' is accompanying the players' strides to the middle, England have the obligatory huddle and are now positively bounding to their fielding positions. Tim Bresnan has the shiny new white ball on his home ground and Kamran Akmal will take strike. Single slip in place...

9.45am Pakistan have won the toss and will bat. So Shahid Afridi fancies a change in tactic after fielding first at Chester-le-Street, with the sun bright conditions should be decent for batting. Or so he he hopes.

Team news, and it's not exactly a shocker, is that England are unchanged so will line up like this:

1 Andrew Strauss (capt), 2 Steve Davies (wk), 3 Jonathan Trott, 4 Paul Collingwood, 5 Eoin Morgan, 6 Ravi Bopara, 7 Tim Bresnan, 8 Michael Yardy, 9 Graeme Swann, 10 Stuart Broad, 11 James Anderson.

Pakistan have also stuck with the same team and will look like this:

1 Mohammad Hafeez, 2 Kamran Akmal (wk), 3 Mohammad Yousuf, 4 Umar Akmal, 5 Shahid Afridi (capt), 6 Fawad Alam, 7 Asad Shafiq, 8 Umar Gul, 9 Mohammad Irfan, 10 Saeed Ajmal, 11 Shoaib Akhtar.

9.40am Good morning all and welcome to our coverage of the second ODI. The main news is that the sun is shining in Leeds. Startling stuff. They're expecting a lot of Pakistan fans at Headingley so the atmosphere today should be pretty lively, which is a relief after Cardiff's T20s.

I'm Sahil Dutta and I will be joined by Liam Brickhill and, if the rumours prove true, Andrew Miller to bring you today's action. Andrew 'Gnasher' McGlashan is at Headingley and will be spitting lyrical gems throughout the day in his bulletins.

Just to let you know we have a Facebook page where you can discuss in a jovial but polite, and I plead polite, manner all the goings on. We all know about the great spectre hanging over this series and while I don't want to say much more about it for now, I urge you all to read the wonderful Andy Zaltzman's words on the matter. It's very good stuff indeed.

0.1

Bresnan to Kamran Akmal, no run, lovely start from Bresnan, a bit of movement, and that's all you need, jagging away past Kamran's outside edge

0.2

Bresnan to Kamran Akmal, 1 wide, a very good ball is followed by a slightly poor one as Bresnan drifts down the leg side

0.2

Bresnan to Kamran Akmal, no run, back on to the off-stump line, Kamran almost looks secure as he defends to point

0.3

Bresnan to Kamran Akmal, 2 leg byes, again Bresnan drifts into the legs and this thuds off the pads and dribbles down to fine leg

0.4

Bresnan to Kamran Akmal, 2 runs, Kamran is away with a gentle push past extra cover, no great extravagance but it was a safely played shot

0.5

Bresnan to Kamran Akmal, no run, carefully defended to cover

0.6

Bresnan to Kamran Akmal, 1 run, Bresnan digs it in a touch shorter, Kamran is up on his toes, drops it by his feet in the leg side and scampers through for a single

End of over 1 (6 runs) Pakistan 6/0 (RR: 6.00)
Kamran Akmal    3* (6b)      TT Bresnan    1-0-4-0
Mohammad Hafeez    0* (0b)

This is an auspicious day for England fans, by the way, five years since that glorious day when they secured the 2005 Ashes.

1.1

Anderson to Kamran Akmal, no run, Anderson marks the occasion by dishing up a fullish half-volley that is stroked firmly to mid-off

1.2

Anderson to Kamran Akmal, FOUR, very nicely played here, Anderson arrows into leg stump and Kamran flicks away with a style through square leg for four

1.3

Anderson to Kamran Akmal, no run, Anderson's response is good, heading for the top of off before Kamran intercepted with a quiet defence

1.4

Anderson to Kamran Akmal, no run, big appeal from Anderson as he spears in a fuller ball that traps Kamran on the pads, heading down though

1.5

Anderson to Kamran Akmal, no run, this is gun-barrel straight - both the line and the lac of movement in the air or off the wicket

1.6

Anderson to Kamran Akmal, no run, defended crisply into the covers, by the looks of things this is a flat and easy paced wicket begging for runs, but it's only been two overs

End of over 2 (4 runs) Pakistan 10/0 (RR: 5.00)
Kamran Akmal    7* (12b 1x4)      JM Anderson    1-0-4-0
Mohammad Hafeez    0* (0b)      TT Bresnan    1-0-4-0

Mohammad Hafeez has watched carefully for two overs and will now face his first ball.

2.1

Bresnan to Mohammad Hafeez, 1 run, nicely played here, Hafeez stands tall and strokes a single wide of mid-off

2.2

Bresnan to Kamran Akmal, no run, back of a length from Bresnan, Akmal carefully behind it

2.3

Bresnan to Kamran Akmal, no run, good line from Bresnan but there is nothing in the pitch to concern the batsmen

2.4

Bresnan to Kamran Akmal, no run, touch fuller from the bowler and Kamran plays a touch loosely across the line and can only get an inside edge that trickles away by his feet

2.5

Bresnan to Kamran Akmal, FOUR, shot! Very neatly done again from Kamran, flicking a shortish ball with perfect timing through square leg for a boundary

2.6

Bresnan to Kamran Akmal, FOUR, this is even better! Bresnan overcompensates, and goes too full, Kamran greets it with the straightest of blades, timing it perfectly down the ground for four

End of over 3 (9 runs) Pakistan 19/0 (RR: 6.33)
Kamran Akmal    15* (17b 3x4)      TT Bresnan    2-0-13-0
Mohammad Hafeez    1* (1b)      JM Anderson    1-0-4-0

3.1

Anderson to Mohammad Hafeez, no run, Anderson is not racing in, in these conditions I think he realises control is his only weapon, and the line is good and carefully defended

3.2

Anderson to Mohammad Hafeez, no run, Hafeez seems like a man who won't be hurried as he eases into a gentle forward block

3.3

Anderson to Mohammad Hafeez, no run, slight change of length with Anderson forcing Hafeez back to defend

3.4

Anderson to Mohammad Hafeez, no run, Hafeez looks fairly secure but doesn't seem able to rotate the strike

3.5

Anderson to Mohammad Hafeez, no run, another dot ball as Hafeez prods carefully to point

3.6

Anderson to Mohammad Hafeez, no run, maiden over, and a good 'un from Anderson, Hafeez defending everything

End of over 4 (maiden) Pakistan 19/0 (RR: 4.75)
Mohammad Hafeez    1* (7b)      JM Anderson    2-1-4-0
Kamran Akmal    15* (17b 3x4)      TT Bresnan    2-0-13-0

4.1

Bresnan to Kamran Akmal, FOUR, dreamy shot from Kamran here, nothing hectic or rushed about it, just leaning a drive through point with perfect timing

4.2

Bresnan to Kamran Akmal, no run, "That's a riposte!" coos Miller, and it was, Bresnan landing a top delivery that pitches middle and jags away, leaping past the outside edge

4.3

Bresnan to Kamran Akmal, FOUR, oh dear, poor ball and Kamran takes full toll, down the leg side and Kamran fiddles it round the corner to collect four more

4.4

Bresnan to Kamran Akmal, no run, this time it's carefully defended

4.5

Bresnan to Kamran Akmal, FOUR, four more! Didn't time it perfectly but still beat a sprawling mid-off with a firm drive, Kamran racing along here

4.6

Bresnan to Kamran Akmal, no run, good finish to a very expensive over from Bresnan, finding the right line length and line that Akmal can only defend

End of over 5 (12 runs) Pakistan 31/0 (RR: 6.20)
Kamran Akmal    27* (23b 6x4)      TT Bresnan    3-0-25-0
Mohammad Hafeez    1* (7b)      JM Anderson    2-1-4-0

5.1

Anderson to Mohammad Hafeez, no run, Anderson continues to test Hafeez with straight deliveries, and it's again defended carefully

5.2

Anderson to Mohammad Hafeez, no run, good lengths from Anderson, not dropping short, just keeping things very simple and Hafeez defends uneasily to point

5.3

Anderson to Mohammad Hafeez, 2 runs, you sensed this was coming! Hafeez was getting tied down and tries to break the shackles with a pull shot, didn't really get much of it but still cleared short midwicket for a couple

5.4

Anderson to Mohammad Hafeez, no run, good response, fuller and angling in, almost squeezed through the defences but Hafeez got an inside edge on time

5.5

Anderson to Mohammad Hafeez, no run, Hafeez sets off for an absolutely suicidal single, clipping the ball straight to short fine leg and tearing away before being very firmly sent back by Kamran

5.6

Anderson to Mohammad Hafeez, no run, Anderson completes another good over with Hafeez defending

End of over 6 (2 runs) Pakistan 33/0 (RR: 5.50)
Mohammad Hafeez    3* (13b)      JM Anderson    3-1-6-0
Kamran Akmal    27* (23b 6x4)      TT Bresnan    3-0-25-0

Right, Strauss has had enough of Bresnan and called for Stuart Broad. No slips in place.

6.1

Broad to Kamran Akmal, 2 runs, Kamran continues to attack, skewing an inside edge down to square leg for a couple

6.2

Broad to Kamran Akmal, FOUR, don't bowl there, not to anyone, awful delivery from Broad, very short, very wide and Kamran flayed airily to the point boundary

6.3

Broad to Kamran Akmal, 2 runs, too wide from Kamran again and he cashes in, swinging his arms through the line to slice it over cover

6.4

Broad to Kamran Akmal, no run, Broad locates the right line and length and is rewarded with a Boycott-like defence from Kamran

6.5

Broad to Kamran Akmal, no run, slightly fuller and straighter, carefully pushed to mid-on

6.6

Broad to Kamran Akmal, no run, good finish to another expensive over, with Kamran defending to cover

End of over 7 (8 runs) Pakistan 41/0 (RR: 5.85)
Kamran Akmal    35* (29b 7x4)      SCJ Broad    1-0-8-0
Mohammad Hafeez    3* (13b)      JM Anderson    3-1-6-0

7.1

Anderson to Mohammad Hafeez, no run, it's a different game when Hafeez is on strike, he's defending everything

7.2

Anderson to Mohammad Hafeez, no run, once again Hafeez eases into a defence, there is no intent from him at all

7.3

Anderson to Mohammad Hafeez, no run, Anderson is enjoying himself here, no pressure at all as Hafeez lines up another defensive block

7.4

Anderson to Mohammad Hafeez, no run, fraction of width, the sort of thing Kamran would throw his hands at, Hafeez instead works it to point

7.5

Anderson to Mohammad Hafeez, 1 run, finally a single is found as Anderson drifts to the legs and is picked off into midwicket

There's a quick meeting between bowler and captain which has resulted in fine leg heading back to the boundary and square leg coming up to the circle.

7.6

Anderson to Kamran Akmal, no run, the tactic from Anderson doesn't change though and his length delivery is defended to short cover

End of over 8 (1 run) Pakistan 42/0 (RR: 5.25)
Kamran Akmal    35* (30b 7x4)      JM Anderson    4-1-7-0
Mohammad Hafeez    4* (18b)      SCJ Broad    1-0-8-0

8.1

Broad to Mohammad Hafeez, FOUR, Hafeez with a boundary now! Broad drops a touch too short and down the leg side too, Hafeez helps it over square leg and picks up four

8.2

Broad to Mohammad Hafeez, no run, driven firmly by Hafeez but he finds short extra

8.3

Broad to Mohammad Hafeez, no run, much better delivery, the inbetween length and around off stump, Hafeez blocks

8.4

Broad to Mohammad Hafeez, no run, Strauss tumbles as he fields at short midwicket, not sure why it seemed to roll to him very gently

8.5

Broad to Mohammad Hafeez, FOUR, Broad will fume at this! Hafeez's straight drive, which is not timed perfectly by any means has beaten Anderson at mid-off who slid straight past the ball and allowed it to go for four

8.6

Broad to Mohammad Hafeez, no run, on a length and line and defended carefully, another good over for Pakistan though

End of over 9 (8 runs) Pakistan 50/0 (RR: 5.55)
Mohammad Hafeez    12* (24b 2x4)      SCJ Broad    2-0-16-0
Kamran Akmal    35* (30b 7x4)      JM Anderson    4-1-7-0

Break in play here as Hafeez calls out the physio, England use the break to have a meeting.

9.1

Anderson to Kamran Akmal, 1 wide, I doubt this was in their discussions, Anderson firing a wide down the leg side

9.1

Anderson to Kamran Akmal, 1 leg bye, Kamran advances down the track, Anderson sees him coming and drops shorter which means the attempted leg-side flick is missed and it comes off the body for a single

9.2

Anderson to Mohammad Hafeez, no run, Hafeez is defending watchfully at Anderson's end

9.3

Anderson to Mohammad Hafeez, no run, Hafeez this time has a shuffle down the wicket, Anderson bangs it in shorter in response and it's defended

9.4

Anderson to Mohammad Hafeez, no run, huge appeal from Anderson as he traps Hafeez on the back foot with a fuller ball, umpire Doctrove says no and rightly so, the ball was heading just over

9.5

Anderson to Mohammad Hafeez, 1 run, oh dear, very sloppy from England, Michael Yardy gets a tough bounce that hops past his hands and gifts a single

9.6

Anderson to Kamran Akmal, 2 runs, stroked away through point for a couple to finish the over

Andrew Miller is gagging for a spot of comms so who am I to deny him? Good morning one and all. What a lovely morning for cricket, and what an impressive start from Pakistan. We could have a game on here. It's Powerplay time, incidentally

End of over 10 (5 runs) Pakistan 55/0 (RR: 5.50)
Kamran Akmal    37* (32b 7x4)      JM Anderson    5-1-11-0
Mohammad Hafeez    13* (28b 2x4)      SCJ Broad    2-0-16-0

Stuart Broad has the ball in his hands

10.1

Broad to Mohammad Hafeez, FOUR, full length, hard-handed drive, genuine edge, a regulation one-day four through third man. Broad doesn't like that one little bit

10.2

Broad to Mohammad Hafeez, no run, outside off, jagging away, beats the edge this time

10.3

Broad to Mohammad Hafeez, no run, prodded out into the covers, good probing length

10.4

Broad to Mohammad Hafeez, FOUR, short and pretty horrid from Broad. Banged in and angled down the leg-side, nothing more than a roll of the wrists, and backward square can't rescue the situation

10.5

Broad to Mohammad Hafeez, no run, better line and length, big stride and a push out to point

10.6

Broad to Mohammad Hafeez, no run, a modicum of drama as the two batsmen ponder a quick single to mid-on, but think better of it as the shy comes in. Loose stuff so far from England, and Pakistan have cashed in impressively

Gilbert is not happy at all this morning: "I find your smirking comment 'Tired rendition of Jerusalem' disrespectful. So what if there is a feeling of patriotism. Nothing wrong with that but this overdose of political correctness is out of place. Such philistine thinking certainly wouldn't enjoy last night at the Proms. Maybe if the Barmy Army, of which I am a member, decide in future to abandon all tours other than Australia, New Zealand and possibly South Africa and the West Indies, there will be moans." If anyone has a clue what his point is, please let us know.

In the meantime, here's Sahil

Broad to Umar Akmal, FOUR, and another! Intelligently played by Umar, picking up the line and length early and just opening the face of the blade to get the ball very fine down to third man. The fielder is in the ring, so that's four

44.5

Broad to Umar Akmal, OUT, but he's gone now! Very similar to the dismissal of Yousuf, it was a back-of-a-length effort ball from Broad, Umar looked to nudge down to third man but got a thin edge, and Davies behind the stumps did the rest

Umar Akmal c †Davies b Broad 28 (25m 23b 4x4 0x6) SR: 121.73

It's all happening in this over - runs, wickets - but with both set batsmen removed England will feel they can keep Pakistan to a modest total here. Neither Afridi nor Alam have yet faced a ball, of course

44.6

Broad to Fawad Alam, 1 run, short on off stump, flapped away to long leg by Alam - the helicopter pull as the ball bounced up to head height - and he's off the mark straight away

End of over 45 (13 runs) Pakistan 259/5 (RR: 5.75)
Fawad Alam    1* (1b)      SCJ Broad    8-0-59-3
Shahid Afridi    0* (0b)      JM Anderson    8-1-26-0

45.1

Anderson to Fawad Alam, 1 run, full-toss on leg stump, clipped out to deep square

45.2

Anderson to Shahid Afridi, 1 run, chipped in the air down to long-on, bouncing twice infront of the fielder

45.3

Anderson to Fawad Alam, 1 run, adventurous running! Alam just tapped it down right infront of him and Afridi called him through. Anderson sprints forward after his follow-through but can't beat Afridi

45.4

Anderson to Shahid Afridi, 1 run, lucky for Anderson! A full toss, heading down the leg side, is flicked straight to the man at short fine leg. That could have been a wide, or a boundary if he had got it past that man!

45.5

Anderson to Fawad Alam, no run, slower ball, right up to the batsman, and he can't get it away

45.6

Anderson to Fawad Alam, 1 run, another offcutter, landing on leg stump, and it's clipped out to deep midwicket

End of over 46 (5 runs) Pakistan 264/5 (RR: 5.73)
Fawad Alam    4* (5b)      JM Anderson    9-1-31-0
Shahid Afridi    2* (2b)      SCJ Broad    8-0-59-3

46.1

Broad to Fawad Alam, 1 run, slower bouncer, pulled out to deep square

Broad keeps a similar field - men out on the leg side, in on the off

46.2

Broad to Shahid Afridi, no run, short and wide outside off, Afridi throws the bat at it but can't get a touch on it. He's a little peeved that's not called wide actually. It was certainly marginal

46.3

Broad to Shahid Afridi, 1 run, back of a length again, drilled in the air down to long on

46.4

Broad to Fawad Alam, FOUR, that's the way to do it! Alam goes through the off side, where there's no protection on the boundary. It was back of a length again from Broad, he moved away to leg to give himself room and threaded it behind point

46.5

Broad to Fawad Alam, 1 run, quick and rising into the ribs, Alam is hurried into a swivel-pull down to fine leg

46.6

Broad to Shahid Afridi, SIX, lofted down the ground! Afridi flexes his muscles with a strong hit down the ground, clearing the boundary by a couple of metres. Pakistan need a few more of those!

End of over 47 (13 runs) Pakistan 277/5 (RR: 5.89)
Shahid Afridi    9* (5b 1x6)      SCJ Broad    9-0-72-3
Fawad Alam    10* (8b 1x4)      JM Anderson    9-1-31-0

47.1

Anderson to Fawad Alam, 1 run, drilled into the off side, straight to the fielder but they steal a single

47.2

Anderson to Shahid Afridi, OUT, Afridi falls! It was a full toss fired at leg stump as he stepped away to give himself room. He tried to thrash it in the air, inside-out, over cover, but just sliced at the ball to hit it very high but not too far. Strauss sets himself under the chance, and a wicket falls at a crucial stage of the innings

Shahid Afridi c Strauss b Anderson 9 (16m 6b 0x4 1x6) SR: 150.00

47.3

Anderson to Fawad Alam, 1 run, offcutter, landing on middle and leg, and flicked into the leg side

47.4

Anderson to Umar Gul, 1 run, pushed to cover point, everyone's on the edge of the circle so there's an easy single to be had - but they need boundaries!

47.5

Anderson to Fawad Alam, 1 run, Alam steps away to leg, but Anderson follows him and he's cramped for room as he punches into the off side

47.6

Anderson to Umar Gul, 1 run, again, tapped towards cover point and they sprint through for one

End of over 48 (5 runs) Pakistan 282/6 (RR: 5.87)
Umar Gul    2* (2b)      JM Anderson    10-1-36-1
Fawad Alam    13* (11b 1x4)      SCJ Broad    9-0-72-3

48.1

Bresnan to Umar Gul, 1 run, slower ball on off stump and it's met by a smashing drive from Gul ... but equally good fielding from England's captain at mid-off saves a boundary there!

48.2

Bresnan to Fawad Alam, 1 run, back of a length, whipped out to deep midwicket but there's plenty of protection out there

48.3

Bresnan to Umar Gul, no run, slower ball again from Bresnan, and this time he has the beating of Gul as the batsman aims a massive heave into the leg side. Didn't get anywhere near it

48.4

Bresnan to Umar Gul, OUT, yorker cleans him up! Full, straight and quick from Bresnan, the ball slips under Gul's flashing bat and disturbs the stumps. Another wicket falls in the Powerplay!

Umar Gul b Bresnan 3 (3m 5b 0x4 0x6) SR: 60.00

48.5

Bresnan to Saeed Ajmal, 1 run, slower ball on middle stump, Ajmal gets across to off and flicks to short fine leg

48.6

Bresnan to Fawad Alam, no run, great death bowling from Bresnan! Alam tried to give himself some room, but the yorker was speared down at his toes and he could only dig it out back to the bowler

End of over 49 (3 runs) Pakistan 285/7 (RR: 5.81)
Fawad Alam    14* (13b 1x4)      TT Bresnan    9-0-53-1
Saeed Ajmal    1* (1b)      JM Anderson    10-1-36-1

Broad to bowl the final over. Can Pakistan reach 300?

49.1

Broad to Saeed Ajmal, 2 runs, short, pulled out to long leg where Bopara charges round to keep them to two

49.2

Broad to Saeed Ajmal, 1 run, slower bouncer this time, Ajmal tries to paddle it past short fine leg but can't beat the fielder - just one run

49.3

Broad to Fawad Alam, 1 run, short again, pulled in the air... but falling just infront of short fine leg! Alam is annoyed, that could so easily have been four

49.4

Broad to Saeed Ajmal, OUT, wild swing, top edge, and Strauss takes an easy catch in the covers. What bizarre figures Broad has now!

Saeed Ajmal c Strauss b Broad 4 (2m 4b 0x4 0x6) SR: 100.00

49.5

Broad to Fawad Alam, FOUR, Alam finds the boundary! It was another wild swing, the ball didn't go quite where he intended but it's the runs that count. Four runs to backward point

49.6

Broad to Fawad Alam, 1 run, full, drilled at mid-off and just a single to finish the innings

So, Pakistan don't quite make it to 300 but it's been a good effort all the same and these runs will take some getting. Contributions from all of the top five, with Kamran Akmal in the runs yet again. England certainly weren't at their best in the field or with the ball, but they did well to stall Pakistan's charge at the end. Andrew McGlashan's bulletin will be in presently, and will make ideal lunchtime reading. Join us again in half an hour or so for England's chase.

End of over 50 (9 runs) Pakistan 294/8
Fawad Alam    20* (16b 2x4)      SCJ Broad    10-0-81-4
Shoaib Akhtar    0* (0b)      TT Bresnan    9-0-53-1
