Pakistan tour of England, 5th ODI: England v Pakistan at Southampton, Sep 22, 2010
England won by 121 runs
22 September 2010 - day/night match (50-over match)

Shoaib Akhtar marks out his run, side strain and all

Here we go...out come the Pakistan players followed by the England openers. It's been a long summer and there's one day to go...

2.20pm As you probably know, there's a lot more to ESPNcricinfo than our ball-by-ball commentary, fabulous though that is. To help you get the most out of this site, we've created this, our multi-faceted toolbar. It's got live scores, up-to-date news and stats, and much more besides.

2.10pm Andrew Strauss was clearly delighted to win the toss, but his team still need to bat well and set a tough total. Interesting, though, three out of the four day/night matches here have been won by the side batting second. Don't forget about our Twitter wicket alerts which could come in very useful as this match progress

2.00pm England have won the toss and decided to bat, which is a major advantage with the lights to come later. They have made one change with Luke Wright coming in for Michael Yardy who is unwell.

England 1 Andrew Strauss, 2 Steve Davies, 3 Jonathan Trott, 4 Ian Bell, 5 Paul Collingwood, 6 Eoin Morgan, 7 Luke Wright, 8 Tim Bresnan, 9 Stuart Broad, 10 Graeme Swann, 11 James Anderson

Meanwhile, Pakistan are unchanged again with Shoaib Akhtar passed fit despite his side problem.

Pakistan 1 Kamran Akmal (wk), 2 Mohammad Hafeez, 3 Asad Shafiq, 4 Mohammad Yousuf, 5 Fawad Alam, 6 Umar Akmal, 7 Shahid Afridi (capt), 8 Abdul Razzaq, 9 Umar Gul, 10 Saeed Ajmal, 11 Shoaib Akhtar

1.50pm Hello and welcome to coverage of the final international of England's long season. It's the fifth ODI from the Rose Bowl and it's a winner-takes-all clash with the series level at 2-2. Of course this tour won't be remembered for the cricket played, but let's hope we have a cracking encounter to finish things off.

I'm Andrew McGlashan and along with Liam Brickhill will be here to bring you all the action, while Andrew Miller will be busy filing from the ground. The good news is that the weather is perfect, although with this being a day/night encounter in mid-September the toss will be crucial. We've seen in the previous two games how batting becomes tougher under the lights and this match isn't due to finish until around 10.30pm.

Abdul Razzaq to Strauss, 1 run, wrong line on leg stump, worked away through square leg but there's a man deep on the boundary now so it's just a single

3.3

Abdul Razzaq to Davies, FOUR, top shot...perfect from Davies as he leans into a cover drive and threads it through the off-side field. No stopping it.

3.4

Abdul Razzaq to Davies, no run, real aggression this time as he charges down the pitch but then misses his attempted thrash through the covers

3.5

Abdul Razzaq to Davies, FOUR, poor line, outside leg stump and flicked away past short fine-leg and deep square has no chance to get around...looks like there's plenty of runs on offer today

3.6

Abdul Razzaq to Davies, 1 run, driven again, straight to mid-off but Afridi is deep and allows a sharp single

SM Davies st †Kamran Akmal b Mohammad Hafeez 17 (23m 19b 3x4 0x6) SR: 89.47

Good wicket for Pakistan...excellent captaincy from Shahid Afridi

"Massive boos for Trott from a very partisan Pakistani crowd," reports Miller. This could be tasty

5.5

Mohammad Hafeez to Trott, 1 run, worked from off stump towards mid-on who is on his heels and allows Trott to get off the mark...Afridi won't be happy

5.6

Mohammad Hafeez to Strauss, 1 run, on leg stump and tucked away to deep square

End of over 6 (4 runs) England 33/1 (RR: 5.50)

7.1

Abdul Razzaq to Trott, 1 run, goes right across his stumps and works it from outside off to find deep square

7.2

Abdul Razzaq to Strauss, no run, width outside off but Strauss cuts it straight to the man at short point...he'll know he missed out there

7.3

Abdul Razzaq to Strauss, SIX, massive from Strauss! Down the pitch and he clubs this over long-on with real power, that shows how his game has developed, and it comfortably clears the ropes

7.4

Abdul Razzaq to Strauss, 1 run, on off stump, pushed to mid-off and well taken single

Arsalan isn't exactly a model student, but he's an exemplary cricket fan: "I'm here in this law lecture being distracted by cricinfo commentary on my phone...thank you cricinfo ...however I will be heading to the library in about 20 mins to use one of their computers to watch the game "

8.3

Shoaib Akhtar to Trott, 1 run, uses the extra pace and angles it down to third man

8.4

Shoaib Akhtar to Strauss, 1 run, goes across the crease and places it wide of mid-on

8.5

Shoaib Akhtar to Trott, OUT, gone! That's brilliant from Shoaib and it's late swing again, Trott drives without footwork and his stumps are demolished. Pakistan, and their supporters, go wild

IJL Trott b Shoaib Akhtar 3 (13m 6b 0x4 0x6) SR: 50.00

"Interesting how quickly his equilibrium can be tilted," says Miller in relation to Trott

Ian Bell is in at No. 4...his ODI best of 126 came on this ground

8.6

Shoaib Akhtar to Bell, no run, gets an inside edge first ball as late swing troubles Bell, another superb over from Shoaib

End of over 9 (3 runs) England 46/2 (RR: 5.11)

    • AJ Strauss 25 (28b 2x4 1x6)

Mohammad Hafeez to Strauss, no run, outside leg stump, takes the pad

Slip in place

9.2

Mohammad Hafeez to Strauss, no run, flicked away to midwicket

9.3

Mohammad Hafeez to Strauss, no run, onto the back foot and pushes past the bowler but mid-off stops the run

9.4

Mohammad Hafeez to Strauss, no run, huge appeal as Strauss misses a sweep but that pitch outside leg...pointless shout

9.5

Mohammad Hafeez to Strauss, no run, down the pitch but Hafeez sees him coming, fires it in faster, and Strauss can only force into the off side

9.6

Mohammad Hafeez to Strauss, no run, pushed down the off side, Hafeez fields in his follow through and that's an excellent maiden

For the next 10 overs it's over to Liam

End of over 10 (maiden) England 46/2 (RR: 4.60)

    • AJ Strauss 25 (34b 2x4 1x6)
    • IR Bell 0 (1b)
    • Mohammad Hafeez 2-1-4-1
    • Shoaib Akhtar 5-0-16-1

Thanks Gnasher. The crowd have been rowdy since the start, and they're still clapping and singing enthusiastically. Pakistan take their Powerplay straight away, and Shoaib will continue

10.1

Shoaib Akhtar to Bell, 1 run, hitting the seam and jagging away, Bell dabs down to third man

10.2

Shoaib Akhtar to Strauss, OUT, caught behind! Shoaib has been whistling them past the outside edge, and finally Strauss gets a touch to one. Big edge, and Kamran dives to his left to take it infront of first slip. Shoaib gets further reward for an impressive opening spell, and Pakistan are on top now!

AJ Strauss c †Kamran Akmal b Shoaib Akhtar 25 (48m 35b 2x4 1x6) SR: 71.42

Plenty of chat - particularly from Umar Akmal - as a somewhat out-of-nick Collingwood arrives at the crease

10.3

Shoaib Akhtar to Collingwood, no run, slung down quick and on a length, but wide of off and easily left alone

10.4

Shoaib Akhtar to Collingwood, no run, full and searingly quick, shaping in through the air towards off stump, but Collingwood presses forward and defends with the full face back down the track

10.5

Shoaib Akhtar to Collingwood, no run, fuller still from Shoaib, and quick once again. This time Collingwood taps to mid-on

10.6

Shoaib Akhtar to Collingwood, no run, pushed full and wide, Collingwood won't be tempted though and shoulders arms

End of over 11 (1 run) England 47/3 (RR: 4.27)

    • PD Collingwood 0 (4b)
    • IR Bell 1 (2b)
    • Shoaib Akhtar 6-0-17-2
    • Mohammad Hafeez 2-1-4-1
11.1

Mohammad Hafeez to Bell, no run, punched back hard towards the bowler, who gets a hand to it and tips it towards midwicket, who was running across to save the run

11.2

Mohammad Hafeez to Bell, 1 run, driven down to long-on, and an easy single taken

11.3

Mohammad Hafeez to Collingwood, no run, full outside off, Collingwood steps down the track and drills it back to the bowler

11.4

Mohammad Hafeez to Collingwood, no run, just a bit too short outside off, Collingwood slashes wide of Yousuf at point but he does well to scoot across and cut it off

11.5

Mohammad Hafeez to Collingwood, no run, driven towards mid-on, Hafeez does well to hurry across and cut it off

11.6

Mohammad Hafeez to Collingwood, no run, punchy drive to mid-off

    • PD Collingwood 0 (8b)
    • IR Bell 2 (4b)
    • Mohammad Hafeez 3-1-5-1
    • Shoaib Akhtar 6-0-17-2

Now, will Shoaib be given another over? Nope, he's off and there a cheer from the crowd as they realise who'll be replacing him - Umar Gul. One wide slip still in place

12.1

Umar Gul to Bell, no run, fullish length just outside off, tapped defensively to extra cover by Bell

12.2

Umar Gul to Bell, no run, positive intent from Bell, who walks down the track but can't quite get a driveable length and defends once again

12.3

Umar Gul to Bell, no run, seaming away from the right-hander off a length, Bell hops back and plays it nice and late - right under the eyes - to point

12.4

Umar Gul to Bell, no run, Bell shapes for a controlled whipped-pull but is beaten by some seam movement back in to him - and a touch of pace - and is struck near the belly button

12.5

Umar Gul to Bell, no run, full on middle and leg, Bell steps across and flicks well but straight to midwicket

12.6

Umar Gul to Bell, no run, great start from Gul - a maiden - as Bell defends the last ball to backward point

The physio's come out with a drink and some tablets for Collingwood, who's suffering from a bit of a headache. Not that that'll stop him - he's tough as nails is Colly

End of over 13 (maiden) England 48/3 (RR: 3.69)

    • IR Bell 2 (10b)
    • PD Collingwood 0 (8b)
    • Umar Gul 1-1-0-0
    • Mohammad Hafeez 3-1-5-1

Hafeez spun a couple, and we're going to have a chance to see if Saeed Ajmal will too - he has the ball in his hand. Slip in place

13.1

Saeed Ajmal to Collingwood, 2 runs, quick offspinner to start, but just a bit too short and wide outside off, and he's cut late down to third man for a couple

13.2

Saeed Ajmal to Collingwood, 1 run, there is a touch of turn for Ajmal - it's the offspinner, turning in from middle and clipped to square leg

13.3

Saeed Ajmal to Bell, 1 run, chopped down to short third man for one

13.4

Saeed Ajmal to Collingwood, 2 runs, Ajmal's certainly not found his rhythm yet - this is much too short again and cracked hard out to deep cover

He's switching to round the wicket

13.5

Saeed Ajmal to Collingwood, no run, full on off, Collingwood steps forward and defends to off

13.6

Saeed Ajmal to Collingwood, no run, good finish to a somewhat erratic first over, Collingwood stays deep in the crease and defends the topspinner late towards extra cover

Collingwood is actually suffering a bit out there. There's speculation that it's a migraine, but he was out with a virus earlier in the series and Yardy's not playing today as he's ill. Perhaps there's something doing the rounds in the England camp? Confirmed as a migraine, but Collingwood's going to stay out there and word is that he's going to try and stick it out at least until the drinks break

End of over 14 (6 runs) England 54/3 (RR: 3.85)

    • PD Collingwood 5 (13b)
    • IR Bell 3 (11b)
    • Saeed Ajmal 1-0-6-0
    • Umar Gul 1-1-0-0
14.1

Umar Gul to Bell, no run, back of a length, tapped down defensively to point

14.2

Umar Gul to Bell, no run, slightly wider of off this time, inviting the cut from Bell but he can't get any timing in the shot

14.3

Umar Gul to Bell, FOUR, crisply timed this time! Bell walked down the track to turn a full ball into a half-volley on the pads and clipped sweetly through straight midwicket. A fielder gave chase, but the ball won that race!

14.4

Umar Gul to Bell, 1 run, punched off the back foot out to deep cover

14.5

Umar Gul to Collingwood, no run, good, testing length from Gul, landing on middle stump. Collingwood plays from deep in the crease, nudging into the leg side

14.6

Umar Gul to Collingwood, no run, just short of that good length, and outside off. Collingwood defends to cover

Out come the drinks and we'll soon see if Collingwood is going to be able to tough this out

End of over 15 (5 runs) England 59/3 (RR: 3.93)

    • PD Collingwood 5 (15b)
    • IR Bell 8 (15b 1x4)
    • Umar Gul 2-1-5-0
    • Saeed Ajmal 1-0-6-0

Collingwood is not going to continue, he's leaving the field and Eoin Morgan will replace him. He will, of course, be able to return once a wicket falls but in the meantime will be dosed with painkillers and probably confined to a darkened room to treat the migraine. He's suffered from migraines before, and he'll know what to do

15.1

Saeed Ajmal to Bell, no run, Ajmal stays round the wicket, Bell presses forward in defence

End of the Powerplay, incidentally, and so the field is spread. Still a slip in though

15.2

Saeed Ajmal to Bell, no run, watchfully tapped to midwicket by Bell, who appears to be picking Ajmal's variations

15.3

Saeed Ajmal to Bell, 1 run, dabbed just wide of square leg this time, and they sprint through for one

15.4

Saeed Ajmal to Morgan, no run, tossed up on off stump as Ajmal stays round the wicket to the left-hander, solid defence from Morgan

15.5

Saeed Ajmal to Morgan, no run, fuller still on off stump, and Morgan inside-edges onto the front pad as he tries to punch into the off side

15.6

Saeed Ajmal to Morgan, no run, nicely driven, but straight to the cover fielder

End of over 16 (1 run) England 60/3 (RR: 3.75)

    • EJG Morgan 0 (3b)
    • IR Bell 9 (18b 1x4)
    • Saeed Ajmal 2-0-7-0
    • Umar Gul 2-1-5-0
16.1

Umar Gul to Bell, no run, Bell steps half-forward in defence to a length delivery, the ball seams a touch and squirts off the outer half of the bat towards point

16.2

Umar Gul to Bell, no run, seaming away again slightly outside off, left alone

Slip is also still in place for Gul, and he has a much tighter ring of fielders inside the circle than Ajmal

16.3

Umar Gul to Bell, no run, tapped back down the wicket, Gul collects in his follow-through

16.4

Umar Gul to Bell, FOUR, elegantly driven down the ground! Nothing more than a firm push straight back down the wicket, but such is the timing that a sprinting mid-on can't catch the ball, another top shot from Bell

16.5

Umar Gul to Bell, no run, Gul adjusts his length, a touch shorter and Bell defends to extra cover

Bell pulls out as Gul runs up, some movement in the stands behind the bowler's arm

16.6

Umar Gul to Bell, no run, good length on off stump, and defended with a vertical bat by Bell

End of over 17 (4 runs) England 64/3 (RR: 3.76)

    • IR Bell 13 (24b 2x4)
    • EJG Morgan 0 (3b)
    • Umar Gul 3-1-9-0
    • Saeed Ajmal 2-0-7-0
17.1

Saeed Ajmal to Morgan, no run, Morgan looks to play off the back foot, pushing the ball to cover

17.2

Saeed Ajmal to Morgan, 1 run, Morgan is off the mark with a tip-and-run single into the covers. He's so good at picking the tiniest of gaps and rotating the strike in these middle overs

17.3

Saeed Ajmal to Bell, no run, doosra pushed full and wide across Bell, who pushes inside the line and is beaten. There's an appeal for a stumping as Kamran whips the bails off, but his back foot was grounded inside the crease the entire time

17.4

Saeed Ajmal to Bell, 1 run, clipped to midwicket for one

17.5

Saeed Ajmal to Morgan, 2 runs, slog-swept in the air ... but falling safely in the outfield and they rush back for the second

17.6

Saeed Ajmal to Morgan, no run, offspinner from Ajmal, and Morgan is beaten outside off by the turn. Plenty of excitement from Kamran, but he didn't get anything on it

End of over 18 (4 runs) England 68/3 (RR: 3.77)

    • EJG Morgan 3 (7b)
    • IR Bell 14 (26b 2x4)
    • Saeed Ajmal 3-0-11-0
    • Umar Gul 3-1-9-0

More spin from Pakistan as Afridi brings himself on. And England's physio is out again to attend to Bell - who appears to have tweaked his groin. Yousuf trots over and puts a hand on his shoulder and asks if he's ok, that's nice to see, good spirit and smiles all round. Bell is going to have a runner - Steve Davies

18.1

Shahid Afridi to Bell, no run, an appeal from Afridi and Kamran! The ball definitely hit the outside edge, but appeared to go straight down and bounce before popping up into Kamran's gloves... They think it may have bounced up off the boot, and Doctrove goes to the third umpire. Nope, straight into the ground. How did Kamran not see that?

18.2

Shahid Afridi to Bell, no run, another appeal! This time for lbw as ball strikes pad, but there was a big inside edge and Doctrove rightfully says no

18.3

Shahid Afridi to Bell, no run, quick legspinner, defended back down the track

18.4

Shahid Afridi to Bell, no run, tight on off stump once again, and more defence from Bell

18.5

Shahid Afridi to Bell, no run, a little shimmy down the track from Bell this time, but can't quite get to the pitch

18.6

Shahid Afridi to Bell, 1 run, sure-footed drive from Bell, bisecting the fielders and rolling out to deep mid-off

End of over 19 (1 run) England 69/3 (RR: 3.63)

    • IR Bell 15 (32b 2x4)
    • EJG Morgan 3 (7b)
    • Shahid Afridi 1-0-1-0
    • Saeed Ajmal 3-0-11-0
19.1

Saeed Ajmal to Bell, 1 run, with the sun setting, Ajmal is bowling in sunglasses now. And he looks cool. Another single to Bell as he drives to long-on

19.2

Saeed Ajmal to Morgan, no run, Ajmal is definitely finding some turn with the offspinner, as Morgan pushes forward and is beaten once again

19.3

Saeed Ajmal to Morgan, no run, width offered by Ajmal, but Morgan's forcing shot goes straight to a tumbling extra cover

19.4

Saeed Ajmal to Morgan, no run, forward defence from Morgan as the ball is pitched up on off stump

19.5

Saeed Ajmal to Morgan, FOUR, chipped over cover, calm as you like! Great execution of the chipped drive from Morgan, picking his spot to perfection and picking up four runs for his efforts

19.6

Saeed Ajmal to Morgan, no run, Morgan is forward and driving to mid-off

Warning: this is quite long. Sajajd writes in with a Quite Interesting explanation of a migraine. Are you a doctor? "Migraine is a neurological syndrome characterized by altered bodily perceptions, severe headaches, and nausea. Physiologically, the migraine headache is a neurological condition more common to women than to men. The word migraine was borrowed from Old French migraigne (originally as "megrim", but respelled in 1777 on a contemporary French model). The French term derived from a vulgar pronunciation of the Late Latin word hemicrania, itself based on Greek hemikrania, from Greek roots for "half" and "skull".

Mohammad Hafeez to Morgan, 3 runs, well, it's all happening here...Morgan chipped it down then ground, Yousuf takes the catch but realises he's running over the boundary so flicks the ball back to save the boundary, then rolls his ankle as he goes over the rope.

8 an over from here on in will get them to 265, and if these two can bat most of the overs that rate won't be a problem. Shoaib Akhtar returns to the attack

38.1

38.1

Shoaib Akhtar to Morgan, no run, straighter this time, defence from Morgan

38.2

Shoaib Akhtar to Morgan, 2 leg byes, tight! They push hard for the second as Morgan glances to Wahab at fine leg. The shy was fired in and he would've been short if it had been a direct hit!

Umar Gul replaces Shoaib from the Pavilion End. Will he be able to find some reverse swing with this old ball?

42.1

Umar Gul to Collingwood, 1 run, that has moved in towards the right-hander, but it's back of a length and has moved off the seam. Flapped to short fine leg

Afridi runs across to have a chat with Umar. "Get him driving," he seems to be saying, or at least that's what his hand motions suggest

42.2

Umar Gul to Morgan, 1 run, full on leg stump, and tapped into the leg side

42.3

Umar Gul to Collingwood, 1 run, fullish length on middle and off, but Collingwood stays deep in the crease and nurdles in trademark style to midwicket. Barely a hint of a backlift before the shot...

Umar Gul to Morgan, 1 run, late cut, and the ball races down to third man

Gul hasn't tried the yorker yet, he's bowled length

42.6

Umar Gul to Morgan, 1 run, slower ball from Gul, picked by Morgan and pushed down to long-on

Six singles in that over with the field spread. The Powerplay might actually also help Pakistan, forcing them to be more attacking with the field placements. These two have been rotating the strike with ease

And there's the call - England take their Powerplay. Fresh pair of gloves comes out for Morgan, and there's a mid-pitch conference between Afridi and the Akmals. Afridi is going to bowl. Long-on, long-off and midwicket are on the boundary

43.1

Shahid Afridi to Morgan, FOUR, savagely pulled to square leg! That was much too short from Afridi, and Morgan almost sent the ball for six with a powerful shot. Bounced just short

43.2

Shahid Afridi to Morgan, 1 run, too short again from Afridi, this time just one run though as Morgan bunts to long-on

43.3

Shahid Afridi to Collingwood, 1 run, Collingwood charges down the track and drives firmly to long-on

43.4

Shahid Afridi to Morgan, no run, a rare sight - Morgan misses the reverse sweep and is struck on the pad. No appeal though, missing off

43.5

Shahid Afridi to Morgan, 1 run, drilled down the ground, there's a slight fumble at long-off but not enough to give away the second

Afridi shouts in hindi "Where are you throwing the ball," notes our scorer, Venkat Raghav, whose senses are alert to all nuances of this match

43.6

Shahid Afridi to Collingwood, 1 run, Collingwood steps right across to leg before the ball is even bowled and cracks hard to cover. There are no fielders out on the rope, but the ball is stopped on the edge of the circle

End of over 44 (8 runs) England 199/4 (RR: 4.52)

    • PD Collingwood 47 (70b)
    • EJG Morgan 74 (82b 6x4)
    • Shahid Afridi 10-0-40-1
    • Umar Gul 7-1-35-0

Gul to continue. Men out at deep square leg and cow corner... and deep cover I believe

44.1

Umar Gul to Collingwood, OUT, clatter! Yorker from Gul, ideal bowling for the situation and Collingwood falls. He had come down the track and given himself room, but swung right over the top of the ball and had his stumps broken

PD Collingwood b Umar Gul 47 (139m 71b 0x4 0x6) SR: 66.19

The Pakistan supporters in the crowd have come to life with that wicket

44.2

Umar Gul to Wright, 1 leg bye, huge shout for lbw! It was full and tailing in again, Wright was hit flush on the front pad, but was that slipping down leg? Doctrove turns the appeal down, and yes that would've missed leg says HawkEye, good decision

44.3

Umar Gul to Morgan, no run, full outside off, Morgan clears the front leg and aims a slash to off but is beaten on the outside edge. Third man is up, it looked as though he was trying to slap it past him

44.4

Umar Gul to Morgan, no run, yorker on off stump, and all Morgan can do is dig it out back to the bowler

44.5

Umar Gul to Morgan, 1 leg bye, another very full ball, landing just outside leg this time and crashing into Morgan's pad. They scamper through for a leg bye

44.6

Umar Gul to Wright, 1 run, reverse-swinging yorker, dug out to cover and they take a frantic single! Afridi fires a throw at the stumps from mid-off but it's just wide!

    • EJG Morgan 74 (85b 6x4)
    • Umar Gul 8-1-36-1
    • Shahid Afridi 10-0-40-1

With the ball starting to reverse, Shoaib Akhtar is brought back into the attack. He's still got two overs left

45.1

Shoaib Akhtar to Wright, no run, Shoaib is nailing the yorkers too! Speared in right on middle and leg, and Wright does well just to keep that out

45.2

Shoaib Akhtar to Wright, OUT, bowled him! That wasn't the yorker, it slipped out as a low, dipping full toss but it swung in sharply - and late - and beat Wright's flashing bat and smashed into the stumps. Wright had made room and was trying to thump it through the covers, but he was beaten by pace and late movement. Shoaib takes his third!

LJ Wright b Shoaib Akhtar 1 (5m 4b 0x4 0x6) SR: 25.00

45.3

Shoaib Akhtar to Bresnan, 1 run, quick yorker on off, snaking in through the air and dug out to mid-off

45.4

Shoaib Akhtar to Morgan, FOUR, good shot Eoin Morgan! Low full toss right on leg stump - and fast - but he just stepped to leg and cracked it straight back to pick up four down the ground

Shoaib comes round the wicket after that shot

45.5

Shoaib Akhtar to Morgan, 1 run, slower ball, on a length. Morgan dabs to gully for one

    • Shoaib Akhtar 9-0-30-3
    • Umar Gul 8-1-36-1

It's been said so many times before, but once again Morgan is the key. If he bats to the end of the innings England will have a competitive total

46.1

Umar Gul to Morgan, 1 run, Morgan takes a step to leg and nudges a length delivery just to the right of Alam at backward point, quick single

46.2

Umar Gul to Bresnan, 1 run, slower ball, full and outside off. Bresnan was deceived by the lack of pace, and was almost through with the drive by the time the ball got to him, but he managed to get something on it - an inside edge - and pick up a single to short fine leg

46.3

Umar Gul to Morgan, 3 runs, shot! Morgan steps to the off side and plays a brave paddle over short fine leg. That was full, fast and aimed right at middle, he had to get something on it. Deep square does well to run round and save a run

46.4

Umar Gul to Bresnan, 1 run, punched to mid-off

46.5

Umar Gul to Morgan, 1 run, another slower ball from Gul, Morgan spots it and taps to cover for one

    • Umar Gul 9-1-47-1
    • Shoaib Akhtar 9-0-30-3
47.1

Shoaib Akhtar to Morgan, 1 run, muscled down to long-on by Morgan. He went aerial but fortunately didn't strike it too well - there's a fielder out there

47.2

Shoaib Akhtar to Bresnan, FOUR, crunched through cover! Shoiab was aiming for the yorker but missed his mark, and Bresnan was waiting to thrash the resultant half-volley through the ring of fielders on the off side

47.3

Shoaib Akhtar to Bresnan, 1 run, much better from Shoaib, this time he hits the yorker length, curving the ball in through the air as Bresnan digs it out

47.4

Shoaib Akhtar to Morgan, 1 run, slower ball, chipped! But short of Asad Shafiq at cover point! They sprint through as Shafiq throws at the stumps, that would've been out if he had hit!

47.5

Shoaib Akhtar to Bresnan, 2 runs, another desperate shy at the stumps, another miss, but this time there are going to overthrows! Umar Akmal it was, he actually did well to attack the ball and field it, but his throw was wide and the backing up wasn't great

47.6

Shoaib Akhtar to Bresnan, 1 run, yorker, speared in on middle stump and all Bresnan can do is dig it out

Shoaib's had a good day today - despite obviously struggling with a niggle in his side - and finishes with 3 for 40. Great effort, and he's warmly received by the crowd as he jogs down to fine leg

End of over 48 (10 runs) England 229/6 (RR: 4.77)

    • TT Bresnan 15 (9b 2x4)

48.2

48.3

Umar Gul to Bresnan, 1 run, full and straight, a slower ball, nudged into the off side for one

48.4

48.5

Umar Gul to Morgan, 2 runs, full and straight, cracked down the ground where Wahab runs across and fields cleanly. Still back for the second though

48.6

Umar Gul to Morgan, 3 runs, slower ball, slapped through cover and beating a diving fielder there! But Ajmal charges across and cuts it off before the rope, three runs the result and Morgan keeps strike

End of over 49 (8 runs) England 237/6 (RR: 4.83)

    • TT Bresnan 18 (12b 2x4)

Akhtar is bowled out, who will bowl the last over? It'll be Saeed Ajmal

49.1

Saeed Ajmal to Morgan, 3 wides, Ajmal comes round the wicket and hurls this way down the leg side, Kamran can't do anything to stop that - wide!

49.1

Saeed Ajmal to Morgan, SIX, great effort from Alam at long-on, but he can't stop the six! Bottom-handed thump down the ground by Morgan, Alam leapt but didn't time his jump very well, getting a hand to it - an achievement in itself - but tipping it over the rope

49.2

Saeed Ajmal to Morgan, FOUR, there's the hundred! Morgan, take a bow. He's giving England every chance of victory with a great innings, and he gets to the mark by crashing Ajmal straight down the ground

49.3

Saeed Ajmal to Morgan, 2 runs, heaved out to deep midwicket, and they sprint back for the second

49.4

Saeed Ajmal to Morgan, 2 runs, swiped across the line out to deep midwicket, the throw back in is not very good at all - Bresnan should have been run out at the non-striker's end - and it's two more

49.5

Saeed Ajmal to Morgan, no run, big swing, and this time he's missed completely! Dot ball

49.6

Saeed Ajmal to Morgan, 2 runs, very full on the toes, cracked down to long-on

What an innings from Eoin Morgan, he leaves the field to a standing ovation from both the England and Pakistan supporters. He hit a match-winning hundred the last time he was here - against Australia in June - and he's taken England to 256 for 6 with an unbeaten 107.

Pakistan, and Shoaib Akhtar in particular, bowled really well and were actually in charge for most of the innings. But Morgan just kept on going, reviving England with a 93-run stand with Collingwood and then running Pakistan ragged and boosting the total with a 54-run partnership in 4.4 overs with Bresnan. This total will take some chasing, and Pakistan will have to do it under lights too. Join us in 40 minutes or so for their chase.

End of over 50 (19 runs) England 256/6

    • EJG Morgan 107 (101b 8x4 1x6)
    • TT Bresnan 18 (12b 2x4)
    • Saeed Ajmal 8-0-50-0
    • Umar Gul 10-1-55-1
