Craig Kieswetter and Chris Woakes have been ruled out of contention for the England Lions match against Sri Lanka at Derby next week. Woakes is suffering from sore shins after a heavy early-season workload for Warwickshire, while Kieswetter has picked up a thigh strain following his unbeaten hundred in the CB40 against Gloucestershire.
Both players would have been likely to feature for the Lions, who provide Sri Lanka with their last warm-up match before the first Test against England, and the pair are tipped to feature in England's one-day plans during the summer. "Grade 2 tear in my quad," Kieswetter posted on Twitter. "Out of action for a bit. Missing Lions game against Sri Lanka!"
Kieswetter is making a strong case for an ODI recall to partner new captain Alastair Cook at the top of the order against Sri Lanka. He has scored two hundreds and an unbeaten 95 in the CB40 campaign alongside 294 runs at 42 in the Championship.
Woakes, meanwhile, made his international debut in the Twenty20s against Australia in January where he hit the winning runs in Adelaide then followed that with 6 for 49 in a one-day international at Brisbane. So far this season he has collected 24 Championship wickets at 18.54 and scored 262 runs with a best of 129.
Woakes will undergo scans to see whether he is suffering the early stages of shin splints having bowled 144 Championship overs in four matches, comfortably the most of the Warwickshire attack.
