Overs 1-50  | Overs 51-100  | Overs 101-150

Thanks Gnasher. England could well reach 450 here, if Prior can continue riding his luck and get the tail to stick with him.

100.1

Welegedara to Prior, 1 run, whipped round to long leg, Prior wants two but the fielder is in very quickly. Prior swipes his bat in annoyance, he didn't want to hand over the strike so early in the over

100.2

Welegedara to Tremlett, FOUR, but will it matter? Tremlett leans forward into a top-class drive that races through the gap at cover and away to the boundary

100.3

Welegedara to Tremlett, no run, Welegedara comes round the wicket, pulling the length back to stop the drive, and Tremlett defends off the back foot

100.4

Welegedara to Tremlett, 1 run, well, this should have been a run out! Tremlett drives almost straight to point on the up and Prior calls him through, all that was needed was a clean throw to the bowler, but the throw is poor and Welegedara is in completely the wrong position anyway ... nothing going Sri Lanka's way

100.5

Welegedara to Prior, no run, very full on off stump, dug out into the off side

100.6

Welegedara to Prior, FOUR, Welegedara aims for the yorker but sends down a low full-toss outside off stump, which Prior puts away in some style, getting down low and angling the bat to pick the gap behind point

End of over 101 (10 runs) England 431/8
MJ Prior    112* (122b 18x4)      UWMBCA Welegedara    25-4-108-4
CT Tremlett    8* (11b 1x4)      CRD Fernando    15-2-63-1

Fernando is pulled out of the attack, and Lakmal comes back. Two slips and a gully in place

101.1

Lakmal to Tremlett, no run, pitched up outside off, Tremlett swings but doesn't get near it

101.2

Lakmal to Tremlett, no run, Lakmal gets another one to shape nicely away from the bat, but this time Tremlett opts to leave alone

101.3

Lakmal to Tremlett, no run, big shout for lbw! That's got to be close ... but Doctrove isn't the least bit interested. Good decision from him, big inside edge into the pad

101.4

Lakmal to Tremlett, no run, slapped on the up into the covers. Tremlett is so enormous, it looks like he's batting with a junior bat out there

101.5

Lakmal to Tremlett, FOUR, another quality drive from the big man! Not a tailender's shot at all, he stepped right to the pitch and played the stroke right under his eyes, power and timing combined

101.6

Lakmal to Tremlett, no run, Lakmal pulls the length back, Tremlett defends to point

Stuart is already thinking about what England should do with the ball this afternoon: "Everyone's been going on about Tremlett opening the bowling, but half of me thinks maybe Strauss should throw the ball to Finn, considering how much time he's spent opening the bowling here."

End of over 102 (4 runs) England 435/8
CT Tremlett    12* (17b 2x4)      RAS Lakmal    24-2-123-3
MJ Prior    112* (122b 18x4)      UWMBCA Welegedara    25-4-108-4

102.1

Welegedara to Prior, FOUR, smeared to midwicket! This shot wouldn't have been out of place in the closing overs of a Twenty20, he just picked up the length early and swung across the line. With that, the field spreads even further

102.2

Welegedara to Prior, 2 runs, clipped firmly off the pads, and even with all the men on the boundary Prior still finds space to pick up two

Ultra-defensive field here, men all around the boundary

102.3

Welegedara to Prior, 1 wide, Welegedara digs one in at his own feet, and the attempted bouncer loops well over Prior's head. Rightly called wide

102.3

Welegedara to Prior, 1 run, slammed up and over mid-off, a flat, skimming drive that long-off basically puts himself in the way of to stop the boundary. That was hit really hard

102.4

Welegedara to Tremlett, no run, on a length and straight, Tremlett defends

102.5

Welegedara to Tremlett, 1 run, another dipping full toss outside off, Tremlett drives out to cover point

102.6

Welegedara to Prior, 1 run, short and rising once again, this time Prior hooks from in front of his grille and the ball flies in the air towards fine leg ... but drops short of the fielder!

A reasonable question from Rehan: "Why doesn't Finn open with Tremlett?"

End of over 103 (10 runs) England 445/8
MJ Prior    120* (126b 19x4)      UWMBCA Welegedara    26-4-118-4
CT Tremlett    13* (19b 2x4)      RAS Lakmal    24-2-123-3

103.1

Lakmal to Prior, 1 run, full and wide, Prior cuts off the front foot out to deep point

103.2

Lakmal to Tremlett, no run, really short from Lakmal, but even though he bangs it in he can't get it up to Tremlett's head. He actually looked down at this bouncer

103.3

Lakmal to Tremlett, 1 run, a thick inside edge shoots between batsman and stumps, rolling to fine leg

103.4

Lakmal to Prior, 1 run, angled down towards a wide third man for a single

103.5

Lakmal to Tremlett, no run, another short ball from Lakmal, and it whizzes past Tremlett at about navel height

103.6

Lakmal to Tremlett, no run, on a length outside off, and shaping away. Tremlett pulls his bat inside the line as the ball reaches him, leaving alone

Gareth, from Australia, writes in: "This reminds me of the time when Australia had Gillie coming in at seven, with Warnie, Lee and Bichel down the order to tonk. Oh how times change."

End of over 104 (3 runs) England 448/8
CT Tremlett    14* (23b 2x4)      RAS Lakmal    25-2-126-3

First look at spin this morning, it'll be Herath from the Pavilion End

104.1

Herath to Prior, 2 runs, he comes round the wicket to Prior, the field spread, and a very full ball is dug out hard into the covers. Parried by the fielder, and they're back for the second

104.2

Herath to Prior, 2 runs, Prior dances down the track and a swattted drive flies very high ... but lands safely between long-off and deep cover. Two more

104.3

Herath to Prior, OUT, finally, Sri Lanka have removed Prior. He swipes across the line at a straight one from Herath, a real slog sweep, but misses it completely and the ball clatters into off stump. Prior exits to standing applause, he's done really well to guide England past 450

MJ Prior b Herath 126 (195m 131b 19x4 0x6) SR: 96.18

George: "@ Stuart: Why not open with Tremlett & Finn? Broad has bowled his best spells for England as first change anyway."

104.4

Herath to Finn, no run, defended into the leg side

The field comes back in as Sri Lanka search for one final wicket. Slip and short leg in place

104.5

Herath to Finn, no run, solid defence once again from Finn

104.6

Herath to Finn, no run, quiet defence once again. My, Finn and Tremlett fairly dwarf most of the Sri Lankans on the field, such a lanky pair

End of over 105 (4 runs) England 452/9
ST Finn    0* (3b)      HMRKB Herath    15-1-53-1
CT Tremlett    14* (23b 2x4)      RAS Lakmal    25-2-126-3

105.1

Welegedara to Tremlett, 1 run, tucked off the pad down to fine leg

105.2

Welegedara to Finn, no run, Welegedara comes round the stumps and fires one right at middle, but Finn is solidly behind the ball in defence

105.3

Welegedara to Finn, no run, slightly wider of off stump this time, Finn leans across and taps to cover

105.4

Welegedara to Finn, no run, Welegedara sends down a well-directed, if not particularly pacy, bouncer, and Finn does well to bend his long legs and get underneath it

Welegedara switches back to over the wicket now

105.5

Welegedara to Finn, no run, on a length, landing on leg stump. Finn misses an attempted glance and is struck on the thigh

105.6

Welegedara to Finn, no run, chipped in the air just short of mid-off, diving forward! Mighty close, but Sri Lanka's wait continues

Edmund, presumably looking up from a glass of Pimms, has this: "Bring on India. Let's end this Liliputian farce!"

End of over 106 (1 run) England 453/9
ST Finn    0* (8b)      UWMBCA Welegedara    27-4-119-4
CT Tremlett    15* (24b 2x4)      HMRKB Herath    15-1-53-1

106.1

Herath to Tremlett, no run, defence from Tremlett

106.2

Herath to Tremlett, FOUR, slammed through straight mid-off! It was up to him and Tremlett just swung his massive arms through the line

106.3

Herath to Tremlett, no run, lobbed down outside off, Tremlett just watches it go by

106.4

Herath to Tremlett, no run, defended into the leg side

106.5

Herath to Tremlett, 1 run, speared in from round the stumps, the ball holds its line and takes a thick inside edge, missing the stumps and rolling to fine leg. Cries of anguish from the bowler and close fielders

106.6

Herath to Finn, no run, Finn unfurls yet another epic forward defensive

End of over 107 (5 runs) England 458/9
ST Finn    0* (9b)      HMRKB Herath    16-1-58-1
CT Tremlett    20* (29b 3x4)      UWMBCA Welegedara    27-4-119-4

107.1

Welegedara to Tremlett, no run, flashed to gully, on the bounce, off the front foot

107.2

Welegedara to Tremlett, no run, this one just seemed to stop in the pitch and pop up at Tremlett off a length ... but it's met with solid defence, so no harm done

107.3

Welegedara to Tremlett, no run, slightly fuller, but straight again. Tremlett defends

"Strauss should have declared as soon as Prior was out & had 20 minutes to go hard at the Sri Lankan openers then a second chance with a newish ball & the bowlers still fresh," writes George. "Either that or instructed Finn & Tremlett to slog. They're gaining nothing here..."

107.4

Welegedara to Tremlett, 3 runs, dipping full toss outside off, and Tremlett leans into a square drive ... three runs taken

107.5

Welegedara to Finn, no run, angling across Finn, who stretches forward to defend. The ball takes a thick outside edge but goes straight down

107.6

Welegedara to Finn, no run, pushed to mid-on in the ungainly manner that only a true No. 11 can manage

End of over 108 (3 runs) England 461/9
ST Finn    0* (11b)      UWMBCA Welegedara    28-4-122-4
CT Tremlett    23* (33b 3x4)      HMRKB Herath    16-1-58-1

108.1

Herath to Tremlett, 3 leg byes, the ball runs very fine down to fine leg ... but has he got any bat on this? Nope, leg-byes. Tremlett runs straight down the pitch taking the runs, hopefully the umpire will have a word

108.2

Herath to Finn, 1 run, and Finn is finally off the mark, driving to deep mid-off. Applause ripples through the crowd

108.3

Herath to Tremlett, no run, quiet defence from Tremlett

108.4

Herath to Tremlett, no run, well, he's stepped down the pitch and swung his bat like a lumberjack's axe ... but the ball goes nowhere. Something of a mis-hit ...

108.5

Herath to Tremlett, no run, and he follows that up with much more orthodox defence

108.6

Herath to Tremlett, no run, defended into the off side to end the over

Will the declaration come? Strauss looks fidgety on the balcony, but there are only 20 minutes until lunch now

End of over 109 (4 runs) England 465/9
CT Tremlett    23* (38b 3x4)      HMRKB Herath    17-1-59-1
ST Finn    1* (12b)      UWMBCA Welegedara    28-4-122-4

Gareth: "Geeze, given the height of Tremlett imagine the damage his giant clop-hoppers could do to the pitch if he kept running down it. Swann sure wouldn't complain!"

109.1

Fernando to Finn, no run, on a length and straight, Finn defends

109.2

Fernando to Finn, no run, a full-toss is wasted, Finn driving straight to mid-off.

Finn can hit the ball. I've seen him do it. But he doesn't seem too keen on trying anything here, not sure why not. There's nothing to lose

109.3

Fernando to Finn, no run, tapped quietly into the leg side

"Ridiculous to suggest Strauss should have declared 20 minutes before lunch," spits Richard. "There are another 11 sessions after this one. What's the rush?"

109.4

Fernando to Finn, 1 run, punched through cover, hit nicely on the up

109.5

Fernando to Tremlett, no run, short on off stump, Tremlett sways slowly out of the way, looking every inch like one of the Ents out of Lord of the Rings

109.6

Fernando to Tremlett, no run, more defence to end the over

End of over 110 (1 run) England 466/9
CT Tremlett    23* (40b 3x4)      CRD Fernando    16-2-64-1
ST Finn    2* (16b)      HMRKB Herath    17-1-59-1

110.1

Herath to Finn, no run, drifting in from round the wicket, the ball doesn't spin and Finn is struck on the pad ... an optimistic appeal is turned down. Likely heading down leg

110.2

Herath to Finn, 1 leg bye, another appeal for lbw as Finn misses a heave to leg. Again Tucker says no, but Sri Lanka are going to review this. Well, that's going over the top, says HawkEye! Finn survives

110.3

Herath to Tremlett, 1 run, whipped powerfully to midwicket

110.4

Herath to Finn, no run, looped down on off stump, Finn stretches forward in defence

110.5

Herath to Finn, no run, they definitely seem to be playing for lunch here, more defence from Finn

110.6

Herath to Finn, 1 leg bye, another appeal from Sri Lanka as for the third time Finn is struck on the pad. He had stepped well down the pitch though, and it's turned down. Replays suggest it may have just clipped leg

End of over 111 (3 runs) England 469/9
ST Finn    2* (21b)      HMRKB Herath    18-1-60-1
CT Tremlett    24* (41b 3x4)      CRD Fernando    16-2-64-1

111.1

Fernando to Finn, FOUR, Finn swipes across the line and the ball flies to fine leg ... where Maharoof slides right past it to allow a boundary

111.2

Fernando to Finn, no run, Fernando bends his back on this one and gets the ball to rise off the pitch, but it's pushed down the leg side

111.3

Fernando to Finn, no run, pace and bounce again from Fernando! This one bursts past Finn's gloves as he fends

Upul: "I simply can't comprehend why SL don't bowl Fernando more. He's bowled the least in innings (barring the part-time Dilshan). This morning, he was the most economical only to be taken off after 2 overs! Ridiculous."

111.4

Fernando to Finn, FOUR, Finn flaps outside off to another back-of-a-length delivery, and the ball flies down to third man. Career-best for Finn

111.5

Fernando to Finn, FOUR, he's opening up now! That's a great shot. Finn spots a full-toss early, whipping it to midwicket with great power. The crowd appreciate that too, and England are closing in on 500 now

111.6

Fernando to Finn, 1 run, chopped down behind point for a single

Ram: "Upul, Answer to that one would be, he is the Ashish Nehra of Srilankan Cricket, need I explain more."

End of over 112 (13 runs) England 482/9
ST Finn    15* (27b 3x4)      CRD Fernando    17-2-77-1
CT Tremlett    24* (41b 3x4)      HMRKB Herath    18-1-60-1

112.1

Herath to Finn, FOUR, Finn is firing now! He jumps down the track like Trumper, getting to the pitch and smiting this high over mid-on. Great shot

112.2

Herath to Finn, no run, defended quietly into the covers

112.3

Herath to Finn, no run, Finn tries to drive this time, but the ball takes an inside edge and ricochets off the ankle

112.4

Herath to Finn, no run, full toss, driven to mid-off

112.5

Herath to Finn, OUT, and that's that! Finn was having a go before lunch, and though he played some good shots it was only a matter of time before this happened. He swings, head high, right across the line and is clean bowled. Herath has his second, and England are all out for 486

ST Finn b Herath 19 (29m 32b 4x4 0x6) SR: 59.37

With that, the players troop off the field to take a slightly early lunch. England have made a complete recovery from the depths of 22 for 3, their middle and lower order rallying superbly. There don't seem to be any real demons in the pitch, but it's still got some grass on it and England's tall fast-bowling trio should find pace and bounce, if not extravagant movement. Join us in 40 minutes or so for the afternoon session, when Sri Lanka will look to their captain, Dilshan, to start their fightback with the bat. In the meantime, have a look at Andrew McGlashan's bulletin for an in-depth take on the morning's play.

Also, the inimitable Steven Lynch has sent us this list of hundreds by England wicketkeepers, helping to put Prior's knock into context: "Les Ames 8, Alec Stewart 6, Alan Knott and Matt Prior 5, Godfrey Evans, Jim Parks and Jack Russell 2, five others with 1. Stewart 9 more when not the deignated keeper."
